My fiancée just bought us a barely used BowFlex! I had been thinking of joining a gym, but with my walking, our home gym equipment including Pilates Reformer & Yoga, teaching H20 aerobics M-F, the addition of the BowFlex is perfect! I have my big 3 mos weigh-in next week & I feel pretty proud of what I've been able to accomplish w exercise & weightloss. I found a therapist who was recommended by my surgeon's office & am looking forward to this appointment. The hardest thing for me is that I'm both a recovering overachiever & perfectionist: so I need the daily/hourly positive reinforcement of self-talk & affirmations from prayers/meditations I take time to do 2x's daily. Being a gifted psychic one might think I know God wants us all to love & cherish our bodies & not judge ourselves (or others) so we don't break down due to illnesses caused from being overweight, not able to exercise, etc. ; however, translating that after having 23 surgeries since Jan. 2001, left me depressed, anxious, etc. because I judged myself on the before me who was a competing multisport athlete. I'm most proud of the facts that I don't rely upon all the diabetes, high cholesterol, high BP & acid reflux Rx's post-op. I want to fly, but know I must walk first & that means making my health my priority just like many of you have/are also doing. It feels so awesome to have lost the equivalent of two turkeys & to exercise daily. I so appreciate all who've been posting here, bc I'm learning so much from you all. Thank you & God bless on your continued successes.

I also add a 1/2 scoop of powdered Bakers chocolate to my shakes: it's SF/NF & love the SF Davinci flavored syrups. I make homemade broths & Soups. I'm on a Tomato Florentine kick bc you can have it hot or cold. It helps that I'm also a chef so I know the how/what of ingredients. My nutritionist said the liquids all count so this helps me & w chopped spinach & other veggies I get that chew sensation in, which is something I need. I make a Chinese wor wonton Soup deconstructed & it's a lifesaver. I do the SF jellos, puddings & popsicles, too. What I learned was to drink my warmed broth first, before anything else in the morning from my nutritionist. I tried broccoli flavored w parm cheese, but it's too much for me presently.

I just did that test that Barry78 posted according to it I am 4#'s below my goal weight. I like that. I can not remember a time when I was under weight. LOL Granted it is only 4#'s but I will take it.

    So are you, seriously.
It'll be interesting to see if we keep following each other.
I take nothing for granted though, it can slow down or stop at any moment.

I've been walking since right after surgery. I walk 2.5 miles in the am & pm, plus I take my big ol' Italian Cane Corso puppy w me, so we walk in the dog parks w each walk. I teach H20 aerobics daily. Now that I've lost over 40 lbs, I'm adding my Pilates Reformer, Yoga & weights since we have a home gym. Will warm up w 10 min on recumbent bike & treadmill.

I'm living proof that walking is just wonderful for anyone. I'm wearing a loose fitting size 8 as of this week! My sports bras need to be replaced, and I see the inches melting off. I would maybe go to a gym, but have my own here, so I'd be going solely for the purposes of getting a personal trainer & to stay committed to my journey. I think finding g what makes you feel happy doing is the key.

Yes! Plenty of people exercise post-op without joining a gym. I'm just over 6 months post-up and all of my exercise up to this point has been walking. One thing that surprised me post-op was how much energy I had. So instead of sitting in front of the computer all evening, I would find myself getting restless and go out for another walk at the end of the day.
That said, I'll probably be joining a gym in September when I get back to Japan from my holidays, as the reality is I need to do more than walk. I can't run or do anything high impact due to heel spurs in my foot, and I'd like to have more strength training options than I do at home. Also, I live in a tiny Japanese apartment, so there isn't a lot of room for me to work out, even if I had the inclination to do so. I figure if I can make going to the gym part of my daily work routine, it will be much easier for me to commit to it.

I love the discussion here. I do think some of is is individual metabolism. For me, I'm a natural born slug and if I can keep losing while not having to kill myself exercising, then I'm all in with that plan.

I started couch to 5k at four weeks out and ran my first half marathon at eight months out. Added yoga at three months out and did 4-5 hours per week.

Reached my goal weight at a year out. Lost 136lbs from 271 to 135. Size 20 to size 4. 74% body fat to 17%.

Didn't cause any stalls or hunger for me. I think there is no one answer. We are all different with different genetics and habits and histories and mental process. One day science will know a lot more and know the people for whom exercise will work well off the bat and those if will cause hunger and stalls for.

If I hadn't exercised like I did my lean body mass and musculature would be very different so it was definitely the right thing for me. So I suggest experimenting with your study subject of one--yourself.

Keep up the great work! You are definitely an inspiration...after reading your post I started walking 3 miles a day at the track everyday, I increased my Protein Shake intake...the weight started melting off.

For real, the amount of conflicting advice and recommendations out there vis a vis this surgery is enough to drive a person completely bonkers.
Crush pills/pills are fine not crushed
Eat this after surgery/don't eat this
Some peopl;e get to eat this/some people get to not eat
    Work out/don't work out

    Damn, y'all.

I watched that video too. He really does make some valid points.
Personally I don't go to the gym yet. I'm 4.5 months out. My weight loss is pretty steady and the lighter I am when I do start exercising, the less likely I am to injure myself... not to mention the self esteem issues of being the fat lady in the gym
I already notice on the days that I'm more active I get hungrier.
I have a theory. The body is working so hard disassembling itself during our rapid weight loss phase, that to exercise beyond a normal level (daily activities), that it throws it into a panic mode. "We're starving and having to run around searching for food! Halt all non-essential functions!"
So then the body starts using itself up. Mood may destabilize, and ultimately the body becomes a shrivelled up shell...
    But then...
"goal" is reached, the person relaxes, eats a few more calories to halt weight loss, and the body says, "Yes!" Time to get to work putting myself back together!" And suddenly the patient regains 20lbs.
And what happens when they regain? ... You got it! They flip out and either give up, diving into the bag of Cookies, or they go the other way, stressing and straining to get back down.
    Edited to add:
Sorry, had to jump off before my conclusion!
So, what to do? Feed the body so it can function optimally with reduced calories, and exercise lightly to moderately (moderate would be walking 2-3 miles a day and lightweight weights 2xs a week). Save the intense workouts and heavy weightlifting until the scale is only moving by 5 pounds a month or less.
And, if my theory is correct, the patient should be able to slide effortlessly into maintenance and a few extra calories (or lazy days) wouldn't budge the scale. Hunger would be manageable, mood stable, skin and hair healthy, etc.

I have been going to the gym a couple of times a week. I'm 5 weeks post RNY. My surgeon gave the green light after 2 weeks (no weights or core exercises) so I've been doing elliptical, huge stair stepper thing, and walking or jogging.
I just watched Dr V.'s video on Why You Should Not go to a gym after WLS. He is taking about the period after surgery for about 6 months. it actually makes sense and he says surgeons and their teams who tell us to go to the gym and workout are wrong.
Dr. V. says it leads to hunger & weight loss stalls, among other things, since we cannot consume enough calories.
So- are you exercising? What are you doing and when did you start?
not sure if I should save money and forego the gym for a while and just go walking around my neighborhood. Thoughts??

Depends on what you're looking for.
I use the app that comes with the iphone to remind myself of supplements. CRON-O-Meter is nice for food and nutrient tracking. If you're looking for something to build habits, Habitica is quite fun.

Well I need to lose 50 to get back to my lowest. The weight has gone on gradually over the past 3 years, I knew I had to get it in hand but didn't. How did I get in this position well it's wine and snacking (grazing). My husband and I can share a bottle of wine (or 2!) but it is accompanied by crisps (chips) and a family bar of chocolate. Cakes and biscuits have also creeped in to my diet. See I know exactly what I'm doing wrong. I do have good restriction and if I eat correctly I get full on quite small amounts. The other thing I have done wrong is give up exercise. I don't like exercising but I do know it is essential.

My plan: initially there will be no wine at home and consequently cut out the crisps and chocolate. Exercise. The number 50 is too big for me and quite frightening so I am going to cut it down into sections of 5 which seems so much more manageable.

I have started today and I have used my elliptical and there is no wine in the house.

Good morning friends! I am excited about what today will bring as I embark on my journey of getting back to the basics. I plan on eating 3 meals today with no snacking in between and one Protein Shake to make sure I get in all my Protein. I plan on trying to plan out my meals for the week so I don't get overwhelmed. I also am striving to drink at least 64oz of Water if not more. I hope and pray you all have a wonderful day[emoji173]️
