Terrible shoulder pain
Hi Lesley, yes this is normal, it's the gas from the sugery used to inflate the abdomen. Best cure is to walk, walk, walk.....then walk somemore. Or at least as much as your body will let you.

Help quit smoking pre op
I quit smoking over two years ago, and I notice, I just heal better overall after I quit. The carbon monoxide in smoking attaches to your blood cells not allowing as much oxygen on them, causing your heart to work harder, and also slowing the healing tissue and organs that requires oxygen. Also, smoking causes acid in the stomach which can also cause post op problems.

Anyone wake up to find they had an "open" lapband surgery?
Sorry you had to go through it also Shannon. I really think (now) the pre op diet is VERY important. I was glad to hear I didn't have to do a preop, but in hindsight, I would have done one on my own. Might not have changed a thing, but I think I would have had a better chance. Good luck to you, we'll get there!

I live in St. Joseph, right on the lake, about an hour west of you.

Anyone wake up to find they had an "open" lapband surgery?
I think that was the problem. I was not on a preop diet to help shrink the liver. I think had I been on one, I would have had a much better chance at not having an open surgery.

Anyone wake up to find they had an "open" lapband surgery?
I'm sure I'll look back on it that way. Right now with all the extra recovery time, and the extra pain, I kind of would have like to had the option to try to reduce the size of my liver, and do it again. But I'm sure I'll be happy he did it in the long run.

No, only 24 hour liquid diet, and there was the problem I think. It might not have changed anything, but I think I would have had a much better chance.

No I wasn't, he didn't mention it at all.

Sorry to hear it. Why did you have your band removed? Were you having problems w/it?

Anyone wake up to find they had an "open" lapband surgery?
I was banded on the 7/14. When I woke up from surgery I found an incision from just below my breast bone to my belly button. The doctor said because of the size of my liver they could not do the surgery laproscopically and had to do an open surgery. I was not expecting this, and will require much more recovery time, which I had not planned on and was expected to be back to work next week, but I doubt I'll be able to return. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

Can anyone recommend a good/inexpensive mini food processor to grind/blend my food?
I just saw one at wal mart. I mini blender, that you drink out of the same glass it's blended in. Like the magic bullet but only one glass and not the 50 extra pieces. It was 14.80...

Last chance???
Hi Keri, my name is Paul, and I am also getting banded on the 14th. I think I could have wrote word for word what you just described. I too am worried if I can change my eating habits. I think I've put on about 5 pounds in the last couple of weeks. I think it is almost like a grieving process. Kind of like saying goodbye to an old friend. I think once we start taking off weight, it will help get us motivated also. I'm going shopping tommorow for all my post op stuff, and I ordered unjury protien drink, and will buy some at the store also. We'll get there, we will do this. Good luck, and keep us posted.

Buffalo, NY Band 6-30-08 HORRIFIC EXPERIENCE!!!
Sorry you had such a bad experience w/you hospital staff. I'm not sure how that's the band's fault however. I think you will feel better about things as time passes. I wish you the best, and hope you feel better soon. Keep us posted.

Eating out at Costco!
I bet it would save money on a second date too. Considering there probably wouldn't be a second date!

Eating out at Costco!
hmmm, free Costco buffet. I like that idea. Next time bring the kids, and some to go boxes. Just grab the plate and dump the whole thing our to go box. Better yet, sounds like a good place to take a date for dinner! Then I can take her to best buy for a movie.

I am begging everyone and anyone to help!
I'm one week pre op, and I have the same concern about not drinking during meals. However, you're not on a post op diet? Mine require two weeks liquid, and two weeks mushy.

How long after surgery till you can drive?
My sister, who is a RN, is picking me up and taking me to her house after surgery. While I love my sis, and she's great, I really don't want to be there more than a day or two. I'm just way more comfortable healing at home. She lives about 40 miles from me. What are the chances I can drive home the day after my surgery?

Can't fathom exercising
I think you need to just start off really slow. Walk for just 2 minutes a day. Then add a minute or two every week. Like anything it has to become a life style. Back in the day, I had to force and drag myself to work out. Then, after a few weeks, it seemed much easier. After a month or so, I hated missing my gym nights, and loved exercising. Also, you'll have so much more energy to keep up with the toddler.

GP derailed me today!
They said I was leaving the message in the wrong voicemail box, and they were not getting forwarded to her. Which still didn't explain why she didn't call like she promised, (she being the receptionsit) and then she was off on Friday. Up until last week, it was not a problem, so I'll let it go at that.

GP derailed me today!

GP derailed me today!
Ok, the drama continues!!! Now 5 months into this process, I finally have everything done. Remember, my ins required NONE of this. However, the lap band doc did. So, I got my: Seminar done Test/treament for sleep apnea (sleep study) done Psych Eval. Done GP checkup and 6 month diet done Blood Test/EKG done Wrote my post op plan, set up support and fitness plan done So last Monday as excited as can be I called and the WLS center and they said YES we have all the information, and well call you by the end of the day, schedule you preop meet with the surgeon and it should be two weeks after that. Ok so I’m all giddy, call all my friends and family that’s going to support me on this and told them it was going to finally happen. However, no call on Monday as promised, so I call on Tuesday, no answer at the WLS, and I leave a message. Call a couple more times, still no answer. Call back on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, still no answer!! No one answered the phone there the entire week. I called in the mornings, at lunch, and in the afternoons. Nothing nada, zip!!!! So, I called the hospital that's associated with the WLS clinic, asked if they went out of business, went on vacation, or maybe abducted by aliens (said it in a nice jokingly manner). They replied, "not that I know of, you should leave a message. Although I already told here I left several message I remained calm and I asked what do next and she had no answer, I said does this mean I just need to find another surgeon, she replied, "maybe so". Now, I'm no superstitious, but I'm wondering why this has to be so incredibly difficult!!! This surgeon is very experienced, but I haven't had ONE good experience with any docs office I visited. I’ve already spent 100’s of dollars. So far seminar $250.00 Pshyc eval that ins was supposed to cover half but didn’t $200.00 Deductable this year $500.00 FLIP Program (not coverd by ins) $250.00 So far total is $1200.00 and I’m no where. This is getting depressing!!
