I'm buying a new bra every month ????. But I'm just getting $10 Walmart underwires. They're not bad, and I don't feel guilty tossing them when I'm done. When I reach goal I'm going to treat myself to some great bras.

    Smac68 reacted to ShelterDog64 in 6 month follow-up visit
I had my 6 month follow-up (I'm at 5.5 mos) visit yesterday with my surgical team. I've lost 76 lbs, and all my labs came back PERFECT I've been using GENEPRO for supplementing and PatchMD vitamin patches and clearly both are doing a great job for me. When I had surgery, I was still mildly anemic from a long 5 years of severe iron-deficiency anemia and I was taking vit D supplements for a vit D deficiency. The Patches have corrected the anemia and my vit D levels have stayed where they were with oral supplementation.
All in all, it was great...blood Protein levels are right where they should be, Calcium and Iron were perfect and I continue to have good energy and am steadily losing still. Just wanted to share my good news

Smac68 reacted to Pam924 in Observations from a VERY Experienced Person Two Weeks On The Other Side of Surgery
So yep -- compared to many on here, I have next to no experience ... but just wanted to share observations from 2 weeks past surgery for others in my shoes -- or others that will be there soon.
    1. I sure picked the easy way out of this! The answer to that is no. This process has completely changed my life, my thinking, my approach, each and every day and each an every hour. But in order to get control over this weight problem that is puling down so much else it needs to happen. I don't think I was aware of the level of change -- but it's significant -- and it's important.
    2. Thank God I am not hungry anymore! I wish. I am. Not in the same gnawing going to eat a live animal hungry -- but it's still a part of me. But this tool call WLS is helping get control and manage through it. Besides -- at this point the thought of busting a stitch scares me, and I am sure consumption of a wild animal would cause problems.
    3. Momma always said: You leave with the one who brung you. My surgeon and the entire team is pretty strict -- 4 weeks of liquid diet in advance (and I mean shakes only), two weeks moving to full liquids the second week after surgery. I see a lot of different instructions on the site -- and it is interesting -- but I am staying with what my team knows and wants. I figure their experience with this protocol is what works for them, so I'm sticking with it. After all, I selected them. There are different ways to do things in my profession -- and they still have good results -- it can be that was in the medical profession as well.
    4. Weight is not dropping off me with every step I take. i just went for my two week post-op today and was down only three pounds since my weight on surgery day. Yes on the fluids. Yes on the Protein. But this is just the way it is. I know I will get there. Plus, I have lost 44 pounds since my journey began in late July, which isn't nuthin' ... today my BP was 107 over 71 ... blood sugar has been hovering around 92 -- there are lots of measures of success and indicators I am doing the work needed.
    5. I value the information and feedback and openness and sometimes the raw emotions people express on this site. I use it for comfort, for context, for smiles and even sometimes to say "Are you flipping nuts to do that ...." ... internally anyway. Oh the righteousness of such incredible experience (did I mention two weeks out of surgery?).
I look forward to continuing the gather all I can from all of you -- most of whom are so much more expert than I ... and appreciate a forum to express my observations.

Smac68 reacted to James Marusek in The importance of fiber to your diet
I read an interesting article on Fiber today and I am still trying to absorb it. Some of the key points are:
It is important to consume a minimum of 25-30 grams of fiber per day. It should be a natural fiber from real plant food rather than processed or refined fiber produced industrially like inulin powder. We have a massive microbe community that live mainly in our lower intestines (colon). These microbes line the wall of our gut and their numbers reach generally 100 trillion microbes. These microbes digest high fiber foods (that we cannot) and extract the key nutrients. Humans produce around 17 digestive enzymes while microbes have thousands. These microbes (mainly bacteria but also viruses and fungi) have co-evolved with us and produce many of our Vitamins, hormones and chemicals. They are also key to regulating our immune systems, weight and mood.
Here is a link to the article. Beans, Chickpeas, Lima Beans, Split Peas, Lentils, Nuts, Flax Seeds, Chia Seeds and Quinoa.]

Have you talked to your doctor about this? Have you considered how you are going to deal with stress once you've had the surgery and could do actual physical harm to yourself if you ignore the prescribed post op diet? Do you feel that you are mentally ready for this procedure and do you have a counselor who can help you stop eating your emotions?

My questions are simply "food for thought" and not at all meant in a judgmental way. No need to answer the questions above out loud, simply think about what I've said.

    Best of luck to you.

Smac68 reacted to 24601 in One year surgiversary! So happy with the results!
It's been a year!!! I can't believe how fast this time has passed. I started out low bmi (height 5'8.5", starting weight: 190 lbs.) I was always physically active, but my access weight was really holding me back from excelling at all I wanted to do and be as well as causing me great anxiety. I have three young kids, and the day of surgery I woke up and thought, what am I doing?!!! Once it was done, there was no turning back, so I ate what I was supposed to, walked all the time from the get go, and came to this forum for support!
This year has been one of the most amazing years of my life. As the weight melted off, I was able to be even more active, and the more active I became, the weight continued to come off. It was a cycle of health! My goal weight was 140, which I hit around 5 or 6 months post surgery. I hit my current weight about 8 months post surgery. I am now on the cusp of being underweight (124 lbs, I am guessing because I am so active), but I feel amazing! I have never felt so healthy. I do taekwondo twice a week and run a ton (this week I ran a total of 34 miles). I eat when I am hungry and stop when I am full. I still love food, but it just doesn't have the pull it used to have. It doesn't hold my thoughts hostage anymore! My husband is stoked, clothes are so fun to shop for and wear (I went from a size 14/16 to a size 2/4). I wore a bikini for the first time ever this summer! I am not self conscious to meet new people, and I don't have to pull my shirt out of my belly fat when I sit down anymore. Having gastric sleeve surgery is the greatest gift I ever gave myself!

I had surgery on 11/18 and was able to go home the same day. I didn't really experience pain, just pressure/discomfort, which I am still having at times... kind of like intense indigestion that lasts for a few seconds, then fades.
