StephanieS0208 got a reaction from gottadosumthin in What You Wish Someone Told You Before Surgery
I wish people had told me less to be quite honest with you. But I do wish they had talked more about how to handle family and friend's reactions --especially the negative. People have asked me how I'm losing or why I'm not eating at all or much at all and I haven't been honest. I feel like a fraud.
I was expecting nausea, vomiting, smell and taste changes, constant coldness, no hunger, etc. I have only vomited once and it was early on. Everything smells and tastes the same except peppery things. I am very sensitive to hot food at least for right now. Even lemon pepper bothers me and I used to LOVE hot food. I'm average cold; I'm never really freezing or super hot. The scale has moved but my clothes size really hasn't. Water can make you nauseous. Yes. Water. I get hungry but it's a different kind of hunger which will not make a bit of sense until after surgery. I tried to understand it before surgery but you just can't understand it accurately when you've got an abundance of ghrelin I don't think. Some days I'm realllllly hungry and some days I feel no hunger at all. They tend to rotate. You may not feel like a new person immediately. I get tired. I get little aches and pains. I get little asthma flare-ups. I get grumpy.
Keep your mind open and remember every day is different. Take it all in stride and remember that you are unique. No two people will have the same experience.

Give it another week or two. I don't know where you're at stage wise with food. I went through a period of intense hunger but it passed. I'm at 6.5 weeks out.

I'm 34 days out from gastric sleeve. I had surgery at 7:30am on Monday and was home
by 7pm Tuesday. The first 2 days after i got home were very unpleasant. I had a fever and
couldn't keep down Water which would foam up out of my throat. I would wake up vomiting.
Also they pump you full of liquids in the hospital, so you have to pee copiously and it would not
be a bad idea to scare up a bedside commode as your incisions make it painful to get up and
walk. By day 5 I started to feel better and continued to improve. Despite this, I am so happy
    I have had the surgery.
But in those first few days I had several moments when I thought something must be very wrong and
I would have to get someone to take me back to the hospital. Trying to make up my mind what to do,
I went back and re-read in all the papers the Team had given me and under the Warning Signs I found thesenotes: If you have a fever over 101.5--come back to the hospital. If you are vomiting violently,
continuously, or with increasing frequency--come back to the hospital.
So, in the middle of the night, while doped up with oxy something, I reread this 2-3 times and
concluded by reading between the lines, that with a moderate fever (mine was 99.5), and vomiting
that was not violent or continuous--I was doing FINE and this was NORMAL.
I just think they could have prepared you a little better by saying--these are some of the post-operative
symptoms you MIGHT, but may not experience. From reading various bariatric surgery forums, I have
seen that it is certainly true that there are a very very wide range of responses but I had a couple of very anxious, sleep deprived days of worrying continuously that I think I could have been better prepared for.
It increases my general distrust of medical professionals. I feel they don't want to say much of anything that could discourage you from having the surgery, and since some people may not have these postop symptoms, they don't mention them.

I am actually on solids already per my surgeon. You don't have to be only on liquids or puréed foods for that long according to my program. And I am doing great on them.
Believe me. I did my research.

I didn't set a goal weight or date. I've lost and gained weight significantly at least 3 times. I don't want to set myself up for stress and failure and disappointment. I didn't do this to be a number. I did this to be healthy and to enjoy life. I know many people don't have the same opinion as me and a goal is what best keeps them accountable.

I've had Mirena for almost 5 years. I love it. I was really irregular and my periods were SO painful. They're almost nonexistent now. I didn't have a lot of side effects. A lot of people complain about the bleeding when it's first put in, but it was worth it to me.

I read and watched so many horror stories of the pain people are in after surgery and the problems that people have. I'm so thankful and feel so blessed I had my surgery at 8 am this morning I was so afraid of the pain I was in store for. But I feel amazing!!!! Very little pain very little gas. I have taken now a total of 7 walks. The first one right off the stretcher comming to my room from recovery lol they said you ready to scoot into the bed I said no I'm ready to walk lol. The dr said my liver was great and he could tell I did well with the pre op diet. I said and the worst part was I didn't realize till the seventh day that I was allowed to have creamed Soups lol so I did all liquids until then. Duhhhhh. He laughed. The nurses said they are amazed that they have never seen a patient do this well directly afterwards. Honestly I just feel like I did a few hundred sit ups. So for those of you who are worried. Don't be so worried. I spent way to much time fearing the worst instead of expecting the best. I was supposed to be here till Thursday but was told by the dr this evening that if I'm doing this well still tomorrow they are going to let me go home which is absolutely wonderful. Considering I haven't slept since I woke up in recovery bc this bed is not comfortable at all!!!!! And it's very noisy in here!!! And i have never been away from my munchkins on a holiday so hoping everything stays smooth sailing!!! Best wishes to all!!!!

I'm excited for everyone here, I am always amazed at everyone's determination, and this is a huge step for so many!!!!
With that said I have noticed something that is really pretty rude attention seeking and here are a couple examples would be when some makes an announcement about something like being a week away from surgery and they get an attention seeker respond with a ton of me me me junk making the entire thing about themselves.
Or when someone vents and they get a dramatic me me me clearly trying for a one up response.
And my favorite is when something is posted up and some responds with something completely off the wall and totally about them self like a "Today is the Day" post and they get the "My surgery is in 2 weeks and I just started blah blah blah".
We are here to support each other, we need to be mindful and thoughtful of others and how they might perceive your comments, and everyone's program is different, every journey is different. Everyone deserves their Thunder!!!

StephanieS0208 reacted to carterbeauty83 in Week 4 Post Op: Thanksgiving Food
Hello, I'm on week 4 Post Op pureed foods and I'm nervous about Thanksgiving dinner. I'm finding myself upset that I won't be able to enjoy the usual foods I eat on Thanksgiving. Thankfully, I don't have to host this year but my mother is cooking and I love her food. It's going to be a challenge since I'm not able to eat what everyone else will be eating. I'm going to at least get some turkey with gravy and bring mash potatoes I will make only for myself. I think it would be easier if I could do soft foods but that's not until week 5 post op.
Anyone have any other pureed food suggestions on what else I could eat for Thanksgiving dinner? Anyone else having to deal with the same challenge of eating pureed on Thanksgiving?

I had severe GERD. I used to take liquid antacid, Tums, and acid controller plus a daily PPI to deal with it. I had a 4 cm hernia repaired during sleeve surgery and have had no issues since.

When I woke up from surgery it was the first time in a while I truly felt at peace.
Leading up to it, I wasn't sure my boyfriend would stay with me. I avoided family and friends because I internalized alot of my struggles even from those I'm closest to. All the nutrition appointments were in a group setting with alot of people so it's not like I could reach out there. And I'm not sure if you feel the same but I felt like there were so many threats that I was scared to ask questions for fear of cancellation or postponement.
I feel your pain more than you know. I'm sure there are others who can relate.

If you do online dating, absolutely do not give in to the urge to talk to the person endlessly before actually meeting up for a date. It can be very tempting to chat via text or email or what have you for days or weeks before you ever see them face-to-face, and this can always be a huge let down. People are different, online, than they are IRL. And you'll never know if you have that chemistry until you're with them!
Online dating can be a great way to find like minded people, but schedule the date as soon as you know the person isn't a creep/annoying!!

I'm sorry that happened. You made a choice and it affected you alone. Why others feel the need to make snide remarks is beyond me. Your choice literally had no effect on them.
Don't apologize to bullies; it gives them power that is not deserved. Every one makes mistakes.
