I think you need a long term plan. Neither you now, nor next month should be living there. Your son, even more so. It's illegal in Canada and we can have our children taken from our care for having them in an environment with cigarette smoke :-( Smoking is difficult to quit yes, but she doesn't have to. She only has to go outside. This is not right.

I am actually hoping for slow weight loss. I know that sharing of this surgery would be received negatively by family and friends, therefore I am keeping it to myself. I am hoping that if I am able to loose the weight slowly, it will be both healthy and raise less eyebrows. I just don't want the negativity in my life from nay sayers.

I think there is a clear distinction between sitting in judgement and enabling behaviour. Adults should be able to criticize behaviour without being accused a bullying or sending someone off the emotional deepend.
I worked with youth in a Cadet program, and most of my 12-18 year olds could handle criticism better than some of the people on this forum. We taught the. No excuses, take the advice and make the correction and move on. No hard feelings.
I consider food to be a bonafide addiction. Withdrawals, denial of the problem, denial of the consequences, inability to accept the finality of quitting, inability to
imagine life without the comfort foods they are so addicted to.
When I see people seeking validation for cheating their "rehab" from food addiction, I mentally replace the Halloween candy, chips, or whatever with alcohol, smack, crack, cocaine, meth, morphine, heroin, cigarettes or whatever.
If someone was attempting to quit one of those addictive and destructive substances after years of abuse and destroying their health, how understanding would you be? "it's ok, a little won't hurt, get back on the wagon tomorrow, we all have setbacks, it happens to everyone, try not to be too hard on yourself, etc etc"
Or maybe a "what the hell are you thinking? Are you crazy? Why would you set yourself back to day 1?"
    Just my opinion.

What other reason should there be than meeting an arbitrary requirement? Hell, if it's the difference between being at a BMI of 39.8 and being denied and a BMI of 40.1 and getting approved - I'd boost my weight for the important weigh in without even thinking about it!
When it comes to insurance companies and meeting their weight requirements I'd classify that "roll of quarters" as an act of pure self-defense.

I will never forget the laughter at my obese husband when he had heatstroke in the Bahamas, when he was in the ER at Freeport. I have pictures of the fat kid when he was 12. I am married to the most gentle and wonderful man in the world, I have watched him go days without eating, go two years on liquid shakes, Optifast, with heartbreak. I have called Rescue so many times. Twenty five years together, and I now see him as a happy man the first time in his life about himself. I laugh at the amount of clothes he buys. I laugh at him being 69 years old and letting his grey hair grow a little, asking me if it is long enough for a ponytail. He will never be laughed at again.

This is great. Thank you :-) I have 85 to 90 pounds to lose. I have lost 12 so far. So close to 100 pounds loss in total would be ideal for me. I know I will want a breast lift without a doubt. Hoping everything else will be "ok" with me. The loss is more important than the skin without a doubt. Thanks for the feedback :-)

I have been seeing a few posts about rny causing more saggy skin. I can understand that if weight loss is fast vs. slow that there will be more saggy skin, however does it not catch up? I mean is a Sleever goes from 300 to 150 in 2 years, and an RNYer goes from 300 to 150 in 1.5 years they may have more loose skin. But at both 2 years out and maintaining 150 pounds won't they look the same? Thanks everyone :-)

I am no expert, but from what I have experienced and seen, weight loss is weight loss. The rate of weight loss has no impact on loose skin. Now, that said, it can take up to a year after weight loss for your skin to "catch up" and shrink as much as it's going to, but it will catch up to whatever its potential it no matter how you lose the weight.
The actually loose skin amount is based on several things; your age, genetics, your level of obesity and how long you carried the excess weight.

No matter what? Loose skin looks better than filled out skin in a great pair of jeans, so....

I went in to surgery just below 34 bmi. I was told to expect to be a slow loser and not to compare my weight loss numbers with others. Surgery was almost 3 weeks ago and I've only lost 10 lbs, but overall I'm down 26 lbs from my first consult, mainly due to the pre-op liquid diet. I don't mind a slower loss. Fewer raised eyebrows and likely fewer skin issues.

If there are still tags on the clothes you might want to ask the store about their policies and see if it would be possible for you to exchange them for a smaller size.
There are online stores like Depop where you can sell clothes, so that might be an option worth checking out.
