I never worried about not having a certain food ever again, because if I am that crazy about whatever food in time I can have it. Even if it isb3yrs down the road. But the thought of no big bowl of Pasta, big plate of XYZ is out the window because of the physical impossibility actually gave me anxiety. I wasnt a big eater all the time, just a bad eater. So it took me off guard that this would be an issue.Wasn't a thought before surgery really.
I still have anxiety about eating a larger portion than I can handle, even with portioning. Paranoid about stretching my pouch. Paranoid if the portion will trigger me to stop losing. When I watch 600lb life and they dont lose or actually gain after surgery and I see their portion sizes, I always wonder how they can eat that amount.

I feel sympathy for anyone who can't even FATHOM that someone could have a support system outside their immediate family they can lean on for help and questions like these.
What a weird thing to get worked up about.
Anyway- just want to chime in that your friend's daughter might want to get a blood test for celiac. The leading celiac researcher in NYC says they are seeing way more obese celiacs in the last few years and the longstanding wisdom that celiac causes weight loss has been challenged. Just a simple blood test and one more thing to rule out. I'm a fat celiac myself!

You don't seem to understand why this mother is allowing me to make medical decisions for her child?
I'm not. At her mothers request- I am using the resources available to me to try to get more info for her daughter.
    Is she not capable?
She asked me to ask on a forum that I have access to. You want her to join this forum just to ask 1 question? (When her friend already has access)...
The father isn't in the picture.
What I don't understand is why YOU are so offended that a person could try to help a child. If YOU don't deem my question worthy of your answer, move on. You have continued to question my motives all along... how about because I am a decent human being looking out for a child that needs help. I'm sorry that my reason isn't good enough for you.

You are being a GREAT FRIEND!! But....I was a Mother who had fought her weight my whole life!! My daughter who is now 36 years old had a weight problem in Jr and thru her High School years. Now when she was around 7 years old mind you all she had ever seen from her mom was one diet after another. Well, she told me in her child-like voice, "Look, mom, I'm skinny down!" This totallyBROKE my heart!! So guess what I did, I never taught her anything about eating healthy or portion control!! WHY you might ask, because I didn't want her to grow up hating herself because she couldn't control her food intake!! I didn't realize until she was grown that she was teased terribly about her weight. I figured she could deal with her weight as she got older. Now hind site I HATE that I didn't help her when she was younger!! She now weighs 270#'s. Has 4 kids ages 15 to 8. Has Diabetes on both sides of her family!! Has no idea how to lose weight healthily. I failed her as a child trying to protect her from the BULL SH** I went thru!! So I really commend you for wanting to help her mom and herself. Try to teach her now about eating the right way and how to eat the right portions. Maybe you can save her from the heartache of obesity. IF ONLY I WOULD HAVE BEEN SMARTER about this junk!!

It is hard to lose weight pre-op. For me, it was a challenge just to maintain my metabolism was so shot.
Have you weaned yourself off of carbonation and caffeine? Drinking a lot of Water is helpful, too. Just giving up diet soda will be very helpful.
Are you avoiding starches? Try filling up on Protein and non-starchy vegetables. One strategy my NUT suggested was to add a bag of steamed vegetables to my meal.
Have you talked to a NUT about your goals and challenges?

It really warms my heart if I have had any impact... So first, the scar came because I started coaching early and tore my incision, but I did have the sleeve. Lol. I was so excited and motivated to be the skinny guy inside, I started right away and never looked back. So, 3 weeks after surgery, I was throwing cutoff drills at my sons practice, and tore the glue of the incision. I kept it clean, but didn't go to the doc till my next appointment, hence... I have a reminder. I love it, I want a reminder
For me, at 38 and happily married, it has been about being more to my family. I just want to be the best version of myself. Now I am in a frame of mind that keeps me happy. I am going to be working on a list of Snacks, and foods that I call the " feel goods". Please share with me yours as you move along your Quest. I am very happy with my decision to cut out the "Drugs" ( Breads, Pasta, candy bars, etc.) because I know just one can start the Avalanche... I feel great now, not hungry... And I love to go out to dinner, I love the game of looking for what I can eat, and there is always something... You just have to look it helps a lot if you enjoy Fish first, and then chicken. We don't need to eat shit! We need to enjoy our lives not the 30 minutes of eating crap. Who's with me... Lol.
You guys all rock! You are inspiring me to document what I have done, let me know if you feel it would be helpful.
Thanks again and be your own coach and inspiration, you deserve it! We all do!!!

I have not taken the time to share my story, as a matter of fact I have still not changed my Facebook pictures, or the ones of me at work. food. I believe I had an actual addiction to food, the same as an addict, I didn't see it as an issue... But now I realize that I had a problem.
I eat to live now, instead of living to eat. The surgery helped by taking away the cravings, but I worry that if I reintroduce things like breads, fried foods, and other crap, I will develop the addiction again, just as if an alcoholic was to just have " 1 drink". It is a disease, with horrible side effects including low self confidence, depression, and humiliation.
I have made it my mission to find healthy foods, and replace all of my old favs, with healthy... And what I call, feel good foods. An FG food is one that I can eat comfortably, and they just basically feel good. for me, my list of items that I probably have a little of everyday would include... Chobani Flips. (190-210 cal, 12 gram protein)... These are my go to, if I haven't eaten in a while and am hungry, I can put this down a bit faster, and the size is pretty perfect for a meal. Love them all! Pickles- (0-5 cals) I love the spicy pickles, but I can eat them all. Pickles have become a regular snack in my life. Spears, slices, whatever, they all rock! Soup, soup, and more soup!!! My souls have been a huge part of my success. I make a huge crock of soup and it lasts me weeks. You can freeze some, but always have some in the fridge ready to microwave. I make a few varieties, but the basis is always the same. chicken broth base, cut with Water. Chicken or Cod fish, yep... I said fish! My family hates the smell of my "fish soup" but I loved it! However if you are not a big fish can just go with chicken. Vegetables- carrots, onions, mushrooms, kale, spinach, and even Brussels sprouts... Whatever you like and then I would spice it up with Cayenne and red pepper flakes, I even used Sriracha at times. This soup has been a staple for me since the 3rd month post, and I still make a lot here and there now. It was just great for me to grab a coffee cup, fill it, microwave it, and enjoy it.
I pushed myself to walk, and then I started "1 TED" lol. That means 1 thing every day. If it was parking in the back of the parking lot when at a store, or walking down the street and back when going to pick up the mail, I would just push to do 1 thing, which then would keep except use in the front of my mind.
Get an Apple Watch or Fitbit, make goals and hit them! What I learned is that we are capable of so much! When you are used to walking around with an additional 100 plus, your body has been working out for a long time. Now when the weight is gone, you still have that strong frame. Put it to work! I made some new friends that are athletic, I try and play Pickleball ( the game kicks ass, combo of tennis, volleyball, & ping pong) instead of cardio... I want to transition to a healthy lifestyle, not a 30 minute gym session that I won't be looking forward to.
Think of your weight loss as a super power, but only if you stick to the guidelines. This works for me, and I believe it to be a super power... Let me explain.
Since the weight loss, the world has been easier for me. I can go to an amusement park and get on the rides. I can fly on a plane and not need an extension. I can walk into a crowded bar and not start sweating my ass off! I can buy clothes at a normal store, and with actual brand names on them. I can tie my damn shoes, and without holding my breathe! I can sit in any chair, and not just the ones without sides... I can even sit in the plastic ones.
Woman treat me so differently! I am no longer just the funny guy... Even though I haven't changed! Life has just become much easier, much better, and much healthier, and I never want to go back, so I will continue to treat it as an addiction and will not look to be able to re introduce "everything" back into my eating habits, but instead I will work to find better foods. The nice thing about eating less, is that you can afford to buy smaller portions allowing for better quality foods. Take advantage of that! I always have almonds in the house, and I love veggie chips, especially the jalepeno, but now I grab a handful and walk away... If I want another handful, I will go get it at 30 cals, per handful, but I am going to force myself to get up and walk to the kitchen to get a handful
I feel so lucky to have had this surgery, and if I can help you in anyway let me know! I hope you have found this helpful, I know that writing it has helped me... So thanks!

How much are you eating before that happens? How quickly are you eating it? I find that I am only able to eat about the equivalent of 1 1/2 chicken wings. Or 2 wing dings annnnnnnnnnd I have to eat it over 30 -45 maybe even an hour. I cant eat it in 5-6 bites even if they are small. I get quite uncomfortable and feel the need to vomit. That hasn't happened in awhile but I do find when I eat certain foods (salmon, brisket, chicken) I fill up very quickly and not the 2-3 ounces that everyone boasts about. For me it could be 1/2 ounce to an ounce. IF I am able to eat 3 ounces it will take me at least 2 sittings to get it in. ALSO--- I can't eat other foods with it like veggies or any other sides. It just doesn't work. SO I could be wrong but it may not be that it doesn't sit well with you-- like me-- you may not be able to eat as much of it as you think you can.
Have you tried just eating like 1 or 2 bites chew really well and swallow then stop for an hr? Do you still vomit? If you can tolerate a couple bites and sit on that for an hour-- you may just have to scale back on foods that are a little denser. Especially chicken with skin and coating. That may be something you have to enjoy over 2-3 sittings.

I read this information and wonder why people are choosing to eat fried food too. I guess everybody is different. I am pre op and my gastric sleeve surgery is scheduled on the 21st October. I have completed 15 days out of my 21 day pre op diet without any issues. I have learnt something about myself which is that I am strong. I feel very motivated to change my lifestyle. I realise that I have used my weight as a way of hiding due to past issues. The sleeve will not make that go away. It is going to be a tool to keep me on track but I still have to work on my other demons that have previously caused me to quit previous diets. Life isn't going to be easy, it is going to change.

A good support group doesn't support you when you're screwing up, they call you on it. Most of the people here are trying to reform their behaviors and attitudes about food, they didn't think that getting operated on was going to fix their problem (it's not), because the problem is in their head. The surgery is just a tool to help enforce rules. The fact that you had a normal stomach wasn't what made you obese, and having a smaller stomach won't stop you from gaining weight. The internet and support groups are littered with people who regained the weight, or couldn't lose after surgery. A lot of them STILL not putting the blame where it needs to be - on themselves.
To come on a WLS board and proudly post that you're gonna have some fried chicken, weeks after your surgery, and expect support for that just blows my flippin' mind...and it tells everyone here that you were NOT mentally ready to have this surgery, and are not mentally where you need to be in order to succeed long-term. So we're gonna call you on it, in the hopes that you'll actually do some soul-searching about whether you REALLY want to change, at all. It's not too late, but the fact is...right now, your attitude is not going to be conducive to success. "You're so judgmental. I just wanted some fried chicken, what's so wrong with that?" What's wrong with that is, if your mind was right, you'd be just as taken aback as all of us are that you even thought to eat that crap right now, so soon after surgery and so long before you've reached your goals.

I see people who are years out from surgery who are more seasoned than some others who give advice because they've been there done that. I wouldn't have been as successful as I was with this surgery if I had chosen to not listen to their very wise advice and take into consideration they may know what they are talking about because, well, they're SUCCESSFUL?
