Surgeons have been doing total and partial gastrectomies on cancer and ulcer patients for well over a hundred years. With proper Vitamin supplementation and diet, there is no reason a complication-free VSG would shorten your life. But obesity-related comorbidities certainly could.

icunursie reacted to careya123 in GP says to do Weight Watchers instead
I went to the dr yesterday and told my GP I'm considering WLS. He said I wouldn't be successful unless I controlled my eating first, or else I'd gain the weight back. He recommended Weight Watchers. I've done that a few too many times already, and told him that it wasn't sustainable for me--I always gained it back. He said if I couldn't be successful on WW, I wouldn't be on WLS either. I said I the sleeve would give me an advantage that would allow me to be successful. He responded by saying I'd lose weight at first but then I'd learn to eat around it, and the whole thing would be a waste. A heated discussion ensued.
When I was researching WLS, the first thing I did was look up the five year outcomes of diet and exercise alone (specifically Weight Watchers) compared to WLS. There's no comparison. WLS has a success rate of 50-80%, depending on the type of surgery. Diet and exercise is under 5%. Also, the definition of "success" was much more strict for WLS.
I'm so frustrated. I think I'm doing the right thing. I need some encouragement, folks!
EDIT: He seems to think I sit around and eat donuts all day.

"But you're so young! You could have just exercised and ate less..." Yes because I should have waited another 10, 20, 30 years of unhappiness and hating life until I decided to make a change... of course! Exercise and eat less, well holy hell there's a new concept I NEVER tried before!

I think it would be awesome to find other WLS survivors in our areas to meet up with for advice, support and maybe even clothing swaps. You wouldnt have to be tbe only one ordering broth at a resturant. Lol
If your interested, post your location (and a major metro if you are in the boonies and willing to travel a bit) and we can start to make IRL friends.
    What do you think?

Has everyone here gone insane?? Is there a full moon that I don't know about? The posts this week are nuts. Unless I don't know what I'm doing, I went back through OP's posts and didn't find a single post from anyone else to warrant such a reaction. Is it a threat against future comments? The best way to insure turning people against you and getting never ending snarky comments is to threaten and fat shame here. I feel like the site has been taken over and we're all being punked. Threats, fat shaming, ice cream cake while on Clear liquids, eating swedish fish, because . . . you know . . . they're soft and you're hungry. I really can't take it anymore and don't know why I waste my time reading this site. I'm being punked, right???

There will always be something someone says that you don't like or disagree with. How you react is 100% up to you. Shaming people and commenting that your starting weight is what some people on here have worked their tails off to achieve is unnecessary and disrespectful. If you don't like someone's comment or advice, kindly move on... Do not put the hard working people here down.
Learn to move on and not add to the drama.

    Glad everyone is doing great!
My big day, Auburndale is located 30 minutes from Tampa and 30 minutes from Orlando. I am doing great. Losing, losing and losing. Feel great! I am hoping to make goal before I see my surgeon in October. (Fingers crossed) I exercise everyday. The weekends are the clean the house, detail the car. Bathe the boxers. I haven't bought any new clothes yet. I am still wearing the same clothes to work that I wore before my sleeve. They are BIG and BAGGY but I will continue to wear them. When I reach my first mini goal (first 50 pounds gone) I will go shopping.
I do manage to get the required Protein and fluids. I do find that certain foods now gross me out. I can not stand the smell of chicken frying, sausage and bacon cooking. sugar free pudding taste like pure salt to me. I was told that some VSG patients experience this and foods that I didn't like before I would find yummy now.
Tiff congrats on sprout. I have read your posts and I find you are my kind of woman. Straight forward no bs. Which is me. I don't beat around the bush either. Glad you are here for us.
Melley Meister Hope all goes as planned for you and Emily in August and September. Best wishes on your journey.

I sent something similar to my boss who had this surgery a year before me. She told me that I still don't have a butt. I told her that for Halloween I'd send her a picture of me in just a cowboy hat and assless chaps. She immediately responded with HELL NO!!!. I laughed back that either way she has that image of me in her head (as you probably have now). Ain't I a stinker?

Holy cow am I excited! I didn't intend to buy a pair of pants today but I just wanted to try on a couple to see where I was at. I went into a local Farm and Ranch store and spoke to the gal there. I showed her what I was dealing with I'm told her what size I was and that I was tired of looking like I was wearing a diaper on my ass everywhere that I went. She suggested based upon my current size that I go to 35x30. This lady is absolutely insane was my freaking thought! Imagine my surprise when they were actually too loose! I needed a 34x30! Several weeks ago I got out of my van at a customer's place and my shorts fell off my butt. I really didn't think that I was quite this far along. I will officially be 6 weeks out tomorrow and I've lost 7 pounds since Monday! I'm down 47 pounds since starting my pre op diet on 8/29. I'm officially the lowest weight that I've been in mt ENTIRE adult life at 265 pounds! It was such an adrenaline rush that I actually bought the dang pants even though I wasn't intending to.
Last weekend with my diaper ass Levis.

I read and comment on frequent-flyer forum (Flyertalk) since I travel so much for work. On there (at least on the Delta forum), people are direct verging on rude telling people to use the search feature when they ask routine questions or start threads with topics that have been discussed and discussed and discussed. While I do find the way some people act on there off-putting sometimes, you don't see nearly as many of the same old thread topics on there like you do on here.
I have only been around here for a short time, but even in that time, I have developed similar feelings to those that have been expressed in this thread. For me, it isn't as much the posting about things that you could find through a simple search, it is more about the sheer unprepared nature of SO many people who have had (or will be having) this surgery. I get that I am a bit of a "bariatric goody-two-shoes." I am going to do exactly what my doctor and his staff have told me to because I am going to be successful and healthy and no food or drink is worth more to me than that. I also get that everyone doesn't have that much drive in them, and I also get that food addiction is real, scary, and daunting. But come on, all of these posts about "when I can have XYZ?" or talking about "cheating" on pre-op diets or post-op diets signals really quick that A LOT of people on this forum are ill-prepared to embrace this life change or never really intended to change in the first place. And they will be the very people later on who say this doesn't work.
Yes, people need a place to vent, and yes, people need to be treated with compassion, but they also need a kick in the ass sometimes and a serious reality check. Thankfully, we have some bad-ass vets like LipstickLady and Bufflehead (among others) who always keep it real.

Let's see if I recall enough about kosher eating. meats and dairy are supposed to be separated from other and pigs have cloved feet but they don't chew cud. Nope not kosher! Bariatric kosher though, as I recall it is Protein first so... Beef, yep. Shrimp, yep. Bacon, yep. Cream cheese, yep. Rosemary, nope. Lime juice, nope. The yeppers have it for the bariatric kosher win!

To anyone who hasn't been on our journey, it sounds silly. But I am 12 days post-op & went out with family today for lunch. Though I only had egg drop Soup, it felt like a small victory!!! I was able to "eyeball" the small soup, knew when to stop and it was a great feeling!
I know for many on here, they are moving through stages very fast. My medical group is conservative & I've followed it to the "T". Today was great affirmation that I'm making good progress! I also had strained fat free cream of chicken soup for dinner and all went well!
For anyone whose needing a "sweet fix", I wanted to share something I've made for years. My husband is diabetic. So you use I box of sugar free Jello instant pudding, 1/2 of the milk called for and mis them together. Then add a tub of sugar free cool-whip. It comes out the consistency of a mouse, is delicious and very satisfying with hardly any calories at all! chocolate, pistachio and cheesecake are our 3 favs!
    Best of luck to everyone!!!
