They are kind of expensive, but totally worth it for the Protein if you have a chip craving I would but one of those in my mouth ( guilt free, lol) and they are nowhere near the price that you will pay if you eat regular chips:)

@@Alex Brecher Whoa! Hold on a minute. You can't just spit out ingredients to us for an amazing recipe and not tell us exactly how much of each and whether to bake or not--lol! Please share exactly what to do with this because it sounds amazing!:
"beat pumpkin puree with egg and non-fat cream cheese and cinnamon for mini cheesecakes"
That goes for all of you--I'm not a great cook. I can follow a recipe but I can't just guess what to do with random food. So please be explicit in how to fix!

They are usually in with the medications and Vitamin section. Where the Protein shakes are. Yes - you can have herbal tea and Splenda. I can have red Jello.

One of my favorite sides dishes is roasted spaghetti squash with sautéed spinach, garlic, and a sprinkling of feta cheese. You can sub Parmesan if you're not fond of feta.

Yep the cold thing is completely normal! I actually got a little worried at one point a few weeks post op - middle of summer, actual temperature over 100F, walking outside for 2.5hrs and didn't even break a sweat. Whereas I used to sweat all the time - so I don't miss the constantly sweating thing AT ALL. And now I do still sweat if my workout is good. Buy yeah, that day I was worried there was something wrong with my body's natural cooling mechanism and I couldn't sweat but nope...we just conserve energy differently now.

I prefer not to use the pre-packaged meals like that because they do tend to still be carb heavy and not really enough Protein for us, plus the sodium.

As a worker though, I get the convenience factor. So to combat that, I use a couple hours on sunday afternoon to do food prep so I have lunches that I can just grab out of the refrigerator on my way to work. I also try to get a lot of dinner prep done so I don't have to do a lot of prepping and cooking when I get home from work - not feeling like prepping food, cooking and cleaning a whole bunch of pans and stuff is how I got into the very bad habit of frequent take out/fast food pre-op. THe good thing is we eat such small portions, that a recipe covers a lot of meals for us. If I don't want to have the same thing for dinner 5 nights in a row - I freeze a couple portions.

A convenience thing that I do take advantage of is frozen cooked shrimp. Put a serving in a ziploc baggie and they are thawed by lunch time.

Crunchy Cheetoes are my "demon food". Grrrrrrr! I can sniff them out if the neighbor three doors down has an unopened bag! (slight exaggeration).
I have had to learn just NOT to have them in the house. I am of weak constitution where Crunchy Cheetoes are concerned.
I don't crave them, but if they are around I WILL snarf them down.
That's how I cope with slider foods.
    Whatever works, right?
    Good luck!

Sleeve is not going to stop you from eating potato chips. That's what we call a slider food. This is just one of the reasons you need to stick to lean, dense Protein, green veggies, and other protein-rich and/or Fiber rich foods, not highly processed, high carb foods, particularly if you have trouble stopping yourself after eating just a couple.

I love to cook. I haven't had my surgery yet but y'all might like this recipe. Ground turkey with taco seasoning, black Beans, refried Beans, cheese, and I make a cilantro lime dressing with a little mayo and Greek yogurt. I'd eat a spoonful of each and mix it all together like a burrito bowl.

It's sad that we are a support group/informational group yet we have to worry about what we post because people are rude and ignorant. To the lady that said "geeZe you guys are too nice" and then continued with her condescending judge mental comments, we are all fighting the same battle. What makes you better? Why be ignorant. Didn't your mother ever teach you what to do if you have nothing nice to say? For the most part I've seen such supportive and awesome people on this site. Once in a while I come across the assholes. There really is no reason for it.

shelleys goal reacted to tbott in I am 6 years post op and life is very good.
Hi everyone. New to the forum. I had gastric bypass in 2010. It has been six and half years. I weighed 232 pounds prior to sx. Within 9 months I weighed 145 pounds and that is pretty much where I have stayed for the past six years. I wear a size 8. I weigh every day and when I hit 150 I cut back until I am at 145 again. I still "dump" almost weekly but not as severely or as easily as in the beginning. By "dump" I mean if I eat too much sugar I feel nauseous and need to lie down for awhile. No sweating, no beating heart, just want to throw up but can't. miserable. One year after sx at my check up my labs were normal except for K was low. I did not do any more follow ups until this summer. I called my bariatric surgeons office and explained I wanted to touch base. I just left my appointment. Oh...I have a confession. Four years ago I quit taking my mult-Vitamin and Calcium. I have been religious with my B12 and VitD however. My labs were all completely normal. I did confess my lapse of the multi and calcium to the doc; to my relief he told me since my labs were normal that essentially I am absorbing what I need from my food. He told me to keep doing what I am doing and I told him he probably would not see me again unless I encountered a problem. In addition to still dumping (which I am glad I do; but he said is patients usually do not dump so far out) I have an occasional episode of reactive hypo-glycemia. If I eat clean I can avoid both situations but I still have the head that got me fat in the first place, so there you have it. Just thought some might be interested in this info from someone a ways out from sx.

I'm going to copy and paste something I wrote a couple weeks ago explaining my reasons for choosing the RNY over the sleeve. Hope my perspective helps in some way.
I did consider sleeve and would have happily gotten one if my surgeon had had some reason for me not to do the rny. But rny seemed like a better option for me based on a lot of different things.

    - There is much more long-term data on it.
    - It's considered the "gold standard" of wls.
    - My bmi was very high at the beginning of the program... about 67. From everything I've observed/researched and learned in the surgeon's seminars, those with higher bmis tend to lose more during the honeymoon phase and continue to lose more/easier in the maintenance phase. I had a looong way to go to get to my goal.
    - I wanted the accountability of the rny. Many sleevers I talked to simply didn't have dumping, or were able to tolerate slider foods even in the weight-loss phase. I wanted the most strict accountability either surgery could offer, and that meant the rny.
    - Many sleevers I talked to years out that had started very heavy as I did were not really happy with the larger amount they were able to eat, how easy it was to eat bad foods they should not eat, etc. The rny offers more restriction. True, I can stretch out my pouch just like a sleever can stretch out their sleeve but it seemed to me (and statistics back this up) that rny-ers had more restriction farther out than sleevers, and I wanted that.
    - I also knew a lot of sleevers who, for whatever reason, wanted revisions years later and couldn't get them because of insurance, etc. I could mess up my rny too, of course, but I wanted the smallest chance possible, and the biggest bang for my buck.
    - I saw many sleevers, particularly ones with high bmis, entering maintenance with 50, 60, 80 pounds left to lose to reach goal. Of course, this wonderful tool will help you reach goal after maintenance has started with enough work and dedication regardless of the type of wls, but since I had such a long way to go and I wanted to lose weight as quickly as possible to give me a good head start on my life-long road to health, the rny seemed a better option. As it is, I'm not yet in maintenance and I'm about 45 pounds away from my goal. Chipping away.
    - The only arguments people had against the rny did not really matter to me at all. I have to take Vitamins for the rest of my life? Okay, no problem, most people probably should be anyway. There's a slightly higher risk with the rny? Okay, it's really a tiny extra risk, and with all the added benefits, entirely worth it. It didn't scare me at all. I may deal with malabsorption and other complications? Well yes... but so may the sleeve. The different percentages of risk were so close anyway, it didn't worry me at all to take that leap for what I perceived to be my best chance at getting the best head start I could, which would not only greatly improve my health (it has!) and greatly improve my self-esteem (it has!) but also greatly reduce the difficulties of everyday life (it has!!) as soon as I possibly could. I'm 24 and I left college two years ago because I was so sick. I've been sitting here fixing my body and essentially saving my life, and I really don't want to and can't wait another second to start my life. I'm enrolled and going back to school in about 3 weeks, and I look and feel pretty much normal now. I've had no complications, and I've lost 172 pounds since the day of surgery less than a year ago. This was my dream, and it felt like a silly and ridiculous fantasy before. But here I am, and everything I could have possibly wished for has come true for me. AND BONUS! It only gets better from here!

For all these reasons and many more that are more personal and harder to explain, I would choose the rny all over again, and again, and again...

I was set on the sleeve and after my first appointment with the Bariatrician, they suggested I change to bypass because I had severe gerd. They were worried that if I had the sleeve, they would have no where to go with PPi meds.
Then after doing more research, I was thrilled with the idea knowing how much weight I wanted to lose.
    I started at 310 and I am currently 158, down 152lbs.
Best thing I ever did. I have had no complications.

Okay. I am aware of what the surgery does, as I have been planning this surgery for a year. I will do what is right for me. I am willing to change and I want to change.... but I mean, you can't just stop wanting something because the doctor says so. If you were addicted to drugs and were told to just stop, could you? No.... it takes time, it takes support and I'm aware of this... but your "sighing" and pretty much telling me that since I cheated and ate chicken fingers and fries for dinner one night that I am not mentally capable of having a surgery is not why I am here. I am here for support.

Don't beat yourself up. It's not easy to just flip a switch and change years of bad habits. I don't agree at all that this might mean you aren't ready for the surgery. Tomorrow is another day.

I'd stick to what your general doc is telling you. Nutritionists are not doctors. They're nutritionists. Check with your bariatric team and ask them if they agree with your primary.

I see no one answered your post. All I can add is that I would stick with what your surgeon wants for you and his dietician. A primary care doc may not be well versed in bariatrics and the new normal for is patients. Just call your clinic and speak with a nurse they are your best bet. I hope you find the reassurance you're looking for. Good luck.
