My liquid diet started on 7/26. I lost 15lbs . Surgery on 8/9 I have lost 7 slow loser but as long as it's steady I okay. I drink normal now and can tolerate everything just in moderation. Never had nausea. I have no regrets at this point , I needed this tool .

Hey all, my surgery is not until August 30th.... 5 days!!!! EEEEkkk!!!! But I am curious to know how my fellow August sleevers are doing. What are your experiences? What things did or did not happen as you expected? Any tips for those of us about to join the Losers team and embark on this journey with you?

I had my surgery Monday, Aug 21, and I have not been in any pain, just a lot of discomfort from the bloating. But today is day 4 post op and the majority of the bloating is gone. I went shopping at the mall yesterday for about 3-4 hours and I've ran errands most of today. I drove with a friend yesterday, but today I drove myself and have not had any problems. I took a narcotic pain pill the first night to help me sleep and because I was afraid the pain would wake me, but I probably didnt need it. Other than that, just tylenol on day 2 and nothing on days 3 and 4. I just also add...not only did they do my sleeve, but they removed my gallbladder and fixed a hernia I didnt know I had, so even with all that, I'm getting around great. I am having a hard time getting my Water all in, and the clear Protein is way too sweet, so I have had 1 sugarfree popcicle, 1 sugarfree Jello, very diluted apple juice, and broth everyday. I wish you well on your surgery next week!!!

Sure, they would be easy. But the problem is our skin is designed to keep "stuff" out. Sure, small amounts of medications can make it through the skin when infused in a carrier lotion, but Vitamins are different.
Think about how large a Vitamin pill is, and compare that to a patch. Even if you could absorb vitamins through the skin, think about how big a patch would have to be! Lol.
They probably have done studies on this stuff, but ultimately, it's just better to take chewables, powdered, etc. etc.

Vitamins- I've done Flintstones, Target brand, Walmart brand. They all taste icky- no wonder my daughter used to hide them when I'd give them to her! I try to chew them with my front teeth only, then swallow with Water. It minimizes the taste and they don't get stuck in my teeth as much.
Calcium- TAKE IT! You probably already don't get enough, and with the reduced amount of food you'll eat, there's no way you'll get enough calcium/D. Get the store brand of Viactiv (I get mine at Target) and take it NOT when you take your regular Vitamins. I actually look forward to my two chocolate chews in the evening- note I said CHOCOLATE! It's like a treat in the evening, a replacement for dessert, something that tastes pretty good while being good for me (required, even)!

Has anyone tried the vitamin patches? Wouldn't they be easier as a routine?

Yes. Apparently there is research showing that because of the small capacity of a sleeved or bypassed stomach (and the reduced absorptive ability of a bypassed small intestine), less actual Vitamin compound is released and absorbed by a bariatric-redesigned digestive system when the person takes gummy vitamins. It appears that well-chewed chewable vitamins release more Vitamins and minerals into the bloodstream of bariatric patients. I think it makes sense, biophysically. At least, that's how it was explained to me.

I've been taking Vitamins, etc., all along, both pre- and post-op (gastric sleeve). I take 2 kids chewable vitamins in the morning (Target/Walmart brand of Flintstone's chewables- NO gummies), then 2 chocolate calcium/vitamin D chews (once again, Target brand of Viactiv) sometime in the late afternoon (don't take at the same time as the vitamins). I also take Biotin (for my hair loss) and omeprazole (PPI for reflux) each day. Once a week I have sublingual B12 (it's a liquid, couldn't find the meltables at Walmart).
I didn't ask specifically about swimming. My surgery was laproscopic, so I was allowed to shower once I went home (day 3 post surgery). I don't remember what they said about tub baths and immersing the incision sites, as I don't tub-bathe. Even if you can submerge your incisions at 9 or whatever days, I'm not sure ocean Water would be the best idea... the salt water wouldn't be bad for you, but I'm not sure what microbes there might be swimming around in there!

Sometimes they don't I lost 34# and didn't cheat.. my calorie intake was 500-600 daily and my dr said my liver was huge...it is what it is...some don't shrink and some do...some people are born with large organs...he still was able to do the surgery...his concern was all the scarred tissue from a failed lap band I had removed back in 2010. I lost 85# but I was over restricted so much everything I ate mostly Soups. I threw up...it got to the point I couldn't even swallow my saliva....
Point is follow the instructions of ur dr office to the letter..only have 800 or less calories watch sugar/carbs

Hey There!!! My surgery is August 30th as well. I am as nervous as I can be. But you are so right. The positive effects this will have on our lives is going to be a game changer. I keep worrying that my liver hasn't shrunk enough, or that something will go wrong.... but then I stop and remember that it will all be ok. I'm going to come out of this just fine and you will too!! Good luck to you, keep us updated!!

Try not to think of this type of eating as some type of 'reward', food is not a prize. It is meant to be enjoyed for sure, but the mindset about being 'good' or 'bad' means you are giving food power. That is a mind game you are playing with yourself.
Plan it into your meals and just make it part of your food plan if you must.

I have 1/4 C mint chocolate chip Breyers ice cream. Sometimes I have it every day, sometimes I don't have it for weeks on end. That's 75 cal and 9 g of sugar. Before the surgery I would eat a whole pint of haagen das Peanut Butter chocolate ice cream. But I also added in extra exercise every time if you have it. I already exercise at least an hour and a half a day, if I have the ice cream I add an extra 15 to 20.

Unfortunately, I do not feel like I can trust myself at this point to limit myself to a single splurge item. If I allow myself to have one cracker with PB&J (which is one of my weaknesses, by the way!) it will lead to ten of them every night. That being said, I think that if you can control yourself and stick to this one indulgence there is nothing wrong with that. For food addicts/portion dysphorics like myself, it seems like a slippery slope.

I started soft foods yesterday and I'm only 2.5 weeks out and it's so hard for me to get all my Protein in and Water for my goal. It's like I haven't found the right powder or shake for the protein and I get full fast. I want to do better so when my 6weeks comes up I can get back in the water and do water aerobics again. Any help or advice I'm really struggling. I just want to get back to everyday activities again.

I had my surgery done on Monday and I vomited every day. I was dry heaving and everything. Hurt so bad. My doctor eventually prescribed me a steroid nausea pill early yesterday morning, around 6/6:30 am and I felt soooo much better in the afternoon that they let me come home. Ask for a steroid. I also have a little patch behind my ear that helps me as well. The nurse said the patch is similar to a sea sickness patch. I hope you feel better. I dealt with it for 3 days too long

I have surgery tomorrow and I feel like vomiting I am so nervous. I think I'm more nervous of what to expect when I wake up. Some people say it's so painful and some say they just had gas pains. I'm so freaked out. I am super excited to start my new journey but I am scared about pain. I usually do well with pain as I gave birth to two children with no epidural all natural. Everyone saids if you could do that then this will be super easy. Don't know how true that is
