I have to do Fortify BariEssentials because my doctor requires it. It includes the Vitamins in the shake powder. I can't recommend them though. They have way too much artificial sweetener. I found out today I can have whey powder with 8oz. of low sodium twice a day rather than four shakes a day. All I can have is shakes, broth, sugar free Jello, and sugar free Popsicles. I can have anything to drink that is not carbonated or has sugar in it for the most part. I'll get through it. After all, I have a lot to lose.

I trick myself by getting into an audio book I really like. But I don't let myself listen to it unless I am exercising. It seems to jump start things. I'm an odd duck on this though, but give me a good Tom Clancy novel and I am going to walk/run/lift for an hour or more.

This is the most helpful thing i have read this far. Thank you. It got me thinking maybe i should do just that. Set an alarm to eat, then i won't need to think about it. If start to feel hungry or crave I can just tell myself "alarm hasn't gone off" and think of something non food related. Thanks again, i was beginning to feel judged not helped.

We have surgery on our stomachs, not our brains. Of course you FEEL the same as before. Your feelings are in your head. It will take a long time for your brain to catch up to your new physical reality.

My bmi is over 40. and I dont really have any comorbidity. I am almost borderline diabetic. I do take metformin the diabetic medication. every doc assumes I am, but im not. Yeah, well. He considers Kansas City his home, and is here (California) on a temporary job, that has no end in sight and he's been here going on a year I think. The company puts him up in a hotel and gives him a rental car, so it's not like he's planning on staying.

Love your hair. Did you braid it yourself? It looks perfect! Congrats on your journey. I'm only a month out. I go to follow up tomorrow and will know how much I dropped in pounds but I did this for my diabetes mainly even though I was almost 300 lbs at 5'5".

I always sprinkle about 1/4 tsp of salt when they are boiling, and fill the pan with ice when the eggs are done. When the ice melts, they are cool enough to touch, lightly roll the egg on the counter to crush the shell, and it usually peals right off. Then put them back in Water for them to finish cooling

I had 35 BMI and insurance would not cover so I went to Tijuana and self-payed for the surgery. I am 2 weeks post op and all is well so far.

You might not like this answer but there is no way to specifically target body parts for fat reduction. The reason you notice fat loss in some areas before others is usually attributed to simply having less fat in those areas. The midsection is usually the area with the highest concentration of adipose tissue and as such it will take longer to see a significant difference in that area. For the most part fat loss is fairly uniform across the body but is more noticeable in some areas than others.
Crunches or any other abdominal exercise will not cause stomach fat to be reduced in the abdominal area. That being said muscle resistance training will help build and maintain muscle mass which has significant benefits in weight loss. The primary of these is that the more lean muscle mass the more calories your body will burn even resting. Additionally studies have shown that taxing muscle building exercises increases calorie burning for a 48 hour period following the workout. It is even speculated that this window is more effective than strictly cardiovascular training.
Lastly it is critical to have realistic expectations during this process. Many people have this misguided impression that endless crunches and ab roller exercises will give them 6 pack abs. This is simply not the case. While working out this part of the body is important for overall health and strength you already have fairly developed abs. The issue is that very visible abs do not really become obvious until the body is around 15% or lower body fat percentage.
This is not to discourage you in any way. Every day you get closer to your goal. It is very easy to get discouraged in this process if realistic goals are not set. Take care.

WELL I DONT THINK THAT IS A HARD DECISION TO MAKE !! I PERSONALLY DO NOT AGREE TO NOT TELL YOUR BEST FRIEND ABOUT YOUR DECISION TO BETTER YOUR HEALTH AND WHAT WILL MAKE YOU HAPPY IN THE LONG RUN IF SHE IS TRULY A FRIEND SHE SHOULD STAND BY YOU WHETHER OR NOT SHE DISAGREES WITH YOUR DECISION. I THINK YOU SHOULD BRING IT UP IN A NICE WAY LIKE HEY (FRIEND) YOU KNOW I HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THE SURGERY I DONT FEEL GOOD ABOUT MYSELF AND MY DOCTOR HAS SUGGESTED TO ME THAT OPTION DUE TO (MEDICAL REASONS IF YOU HAVE ) IF SHE IS HEAVY TOO AND BATTLING WEIGHT ISSUES THAN MAYBE SHE MAY JUMP ON BOARD BUT I REALLY THINK SHE SHOULD KNOW (WHAT HAPPENS IN THE DARK COMES OUT IN THE LIGHT ) ONE WAY OR THE OTHER..
    GOOD LUCK

You will either get it done this summer.......or not.
If you can't steer them to a summer surgery.....then don't sweat it. Schedule it for the most opportune time you can once school resumes....when school is out for a long weekend or something. You'll only need a week to recover and be ready for action.....at least that is the experience most have reported. I took three full weeks off but that was due solely to having an abdominal hernia repair done during my sleeve surgery. Even then...I only needed pain meds for a couple days after getting home. The sleeve surgery itself was a breeze.
Congrats on making the decision. It certainly was one of the best I've ever made.

2tired2befat reacted to sharonintx in Traveling to Mexico for surgery
I went to Mexico for WLS a little more than 3 years ago. I just took my clothes and other personal items. It would be a good idea to take some GasX strips with you in case you need them but the staff at the clinic I went to gave me everything else I needed.
When you get to San Diego you will find it easy to find where you need to go to find your ride etc. The airport staff are very helpful and are very used to bariatric patients asking for help finding their way.
I flew in one evening, went to the Dr's office then the hotel. The Dr's office provided all transportation and made sure I got to the right place on time. The next morning I had surgery, stayed in recovery overnight, had the leak test that afternoon, they removed the drain, and I flew home later that day. I was awfully tired but made it home just fine.
When I got back I called a couple of local bariatric surgeons in my town and found one to take my stitches out when it was time. It cost me about $80 for that.
My experience going to Mexico for WLS was overall good and trouble free. The sleeve they gave me works like a charm and has given me no problems at all.
Good luck to you and try not to worry too much. You'll do great:)

    Hi Heather!
Good luck with the pre-op. Don't over think it and don't worry about what you aren't having. Just think how much more the scale will drop when you weigh in for surgery.
    How exciting!!!!!

    Ok everyone, here goes.....
I started my one week pre-op diet today. My surgery is in one week, June 7th, 2016 and my nerves are really kicking in. I have seen several people posting their stories in this forum, so I thought I'd give it a go. It will be nice to have one place I can update everyone and keep track of my progress. After reading so many inspiring stories in this discussion thread, I hope that one day, I can do the same.
I'm all stocked up on Protein shakes/ powders (Premier Protein shakes, Unjury protein powders, Syntrax protein powders, and GENEPRO protein powder), broths, teas, and sugar free Jello. Luckily, my pre-op diet allows a dinner consisting of 3 ounces lean meat, 1 cup veggies, 1/2 cup fruit. Thank goodness!
And now for the hard part, posting my weight. Sigh.....First, my height is 5'6"
    HW- 290+
    SW-287
    GW- 160-175
There...I did it. Hopefully, I will never see those numbers again.
