At the practice where I am having my surgery, I honestly don't think it has anything to do with my medical history and the details of my particular procedure. I was told on the very first day I was there, attending a support group/info meeting, that BWLS patients are NEVER allowed to have alcohol again. Now... the surgeons weren't even there. Only one of the five NUTs was there, along with a bunch of post-surgery folks and about a dozen of those of us who were just starting our journey There is absolutely no way anyone there knew my medical history or my procedure. Heck, I hadn't even decided IF I was going to have BWLS, much less what type of surgery. I just think this practice is opposed to "wasted" calories and also cautious about the effects of alcohol on the body due to a redesigned/rerouted digestive system, so they say, "Nope, nada, never again" when it comes to alcohol.
I can promise you that I'm not going through this surgery (VGS) to find ways to cheat the system, to try and eat all the crap that got me this fat without gaining weight, but I also know that when my daughter gets married or I'm at a family celebration or something of equal import, I am more than likely going to have a glass of wine or other adult beverage. I can avoid carbonated drinks if I must (although I love a good stout beer or Dark&Stormy), but I am 99% sure that I will not abstain from alcohol forever. Therefore, it's helpful to hear about the experiences of others who've already been down this path. I appreciate the opinions of those who have gone against what might be recommended as much as I do the experiences of those who stick to the straight and narrow. It's all information- not permission, not judgement, not edict- just information that's always handy to have.

I'd like to lose 80 lbs. I was 260 when I had my first appt with my surgeon. After the 6 mos required for my insurance, I got down to 233 by surgery day. Today is my first post op visit and I have not weighed myself. I wanted to strictly go by my docs scale. I'm 5'6.

I do think some of the responses on this were unnecessarily rude, but that is just my opinion. It is an Internet forum, and people tend to talk much more bluntly than they would if they were in person.
Regardless, people always get shamed when they ask these types of questions, when all they wanted was an answer. In this case, I feel like the question was "is it normal I can eat this much, and did I do any damage?" But instead of others responding with things like "I couldn't eat that much, and maybe you did some damage" they act like the OP personally offended them somehow, and begin to attack.
If he wants to eat a flatbread, he can eat a flatbread! This is his journey, not yours! Maybe his doctor allows him to eat more carbs than yours?!
Anyway to answer the original question- some days it feels like I can eat more than others too. You did take a break in between, which means some food digested and you were able to eat more. A six inch flatbread from subway is made up of a flatbread (which is a "slider food") and probably three slices of turkey/ham or whatever you got on it. It is not Protein dense and therefore goes down easier. If you were to weigh it on a scale, it would probably only be 5-6 ounces. Think of it this way - before the surgery you would have been able to eat the whole footlong...at least your sleeve stopped you at half! Pre op, I know I would've eaten a footlong and a bag of chips and a sugary soda and not been full! Everyone makes mistakes, don't be discouraged because people on here act like they know everything about how much and what you should be eating :-)

I can't even believe that it'll be 5 months tomorrow since I've had this procedure. It's been one of the best decisions I've ever made. BEST! The 1st 2-3 months were an adjustment, but now I go out to dinner & to parties & do fine w/ food. I've learned to cut my food into much smaller pieces & I just slowly nibble & this allows me to keep up w/ my regular social activities w/ friends. I'm not afraid to just stop when I'm done & I take a lot of my leftovers home in a doggie bag:) Some days I'm super strict w/ healthy, low-fat Proteins & shakes, but I still have just a bite of what looks good--but I stop at a bite or 2. I could've NEVER stopped at a bite or 2 of the delicious stuff before this sleeve (maybe a bowl or 2)!!! Other days, I'll enjoy those favorite items, but I try to make sure to exercise on those days--even if it's just walking the dog.
I'm trying to walk 3-5 times a week & just started a weight lifting class twice a week for the last 3 weeks. I'm grateful to be so mobile again. I'm almost 6'0 and have gone from 268 to 188.
To the newbies, stick with your Protein first & don't get discouraged--keep moving. You've got some bright & beautiful days ahead of you!!!!

My dh didn't want me to have surgery but he wasn't not supportive. Now after surgery, he's been amazing. I think he was just scared initially.

I'ts surreal. i think on some level i never thought i would get this far. Not that i expected to fail at the diet, on not get approved, but I'm one of those expect the worse type people. Needless to say its been an interesting ride. Sleeved 6/1, and amazingly feeling like super man (with meds of course). I left the hospital the next day, i could not sleep or get comfortable and wanted to be in my own space. Good decision thus far, im hiding from the scale so i will be surprised when i go get my staples out on 6/10 (hoping for onderland). so nothing to report just a happy sleever.

I just found Dannon Oikos triple zero Greek yogurt and it has 22 G Protein per 8 oz. It will help me cut out a shake a day. I can't eat a whole cup in one sitting but spread out over the day is perfect or even adding to a smoothie!

You can use a banana or maybe some vanilla Greek yogurt or almond milk. My kids have smoothies with frozen berries, vanilla almond milk and a banana, and they seem sweet enough for their liking.

I used to drink wine. I can't now because it is too acidic and gives me horrific heartburn.

I do like a vodka/diet cranberry or diet pomegranate or a whiskey with Coke Zero. Now that it's summer, though? I love a cold beer or three. Sometimes the carbonation is uncomfortable, sometimes it is not. I do have a much better time of it if I pour it in a glass to allow some of the bubbles to some to a head.

My doctor cautioned against alcohol for two reasons. First, it's empty calories. Second, people tend to eat more with less inhibition when they are intoxicated -- and usually not making good, healthy choices. Good thing about beer for me? After even one, I can't eat for at least an hour. I'm totally full. Two, I won't eat for several hours. Three, I won't eat for the rest of the day.

A bonus? I burp like a sailor and it's quite awesome.

I had my 3 month check in on Friday. They said I am right on track! Starting weight was 240 pre surgery diet start. 225 day of surgery and 185 at the weigh In Friday. I am 5'5. I would like it to be more but I am happy! The big news was my Bp was 112/83 which pre surgery on meds even would hit an all time low of 149/99. So I will take that value being off meds! I was 18w pre surgery highest and now I am solidly in a 14 and large instead of a 1x.
My next milestone is 20 lbs more lost by my 6 month and feeling good enough to take a picture and post it!
If my lazy butt can lose the weight and also exercise I believe anyone can!
Just thought I would share for those pre surgery wondering if it is worth it. To me, it was well worth it and I feel great!
