I'm 13 days post op and am sitting in a massage chair getting a pedicure as I write this. Just one of many ways I will be caring for myself now, because it's not just all about diet and exercise, right?

A half ounce of chicken is worth two in the bush.
Or is that something about an ounce of precaution and a pound of baked potatoes?

chicken is a funny one for me; sometimes I can eat 2 oz and other times 1/2 oz before being full. I'm beginning to move to regular foods now, and I'm still testing the waters. It amazes me how such a small amount of food can make me feel full. My daughter and I went to Red Lobster for dinner one night while out shopping. She ordered crab legs dinner and I asked her to add a skewer of shrimp to her meal, and I just ordered a cup of Soup. I ate just about half the Soup, and 2 shrimp and I was done. I had the rest for lunch the next day. Just really amazes me. I'm certainly not complaining though!

I still have a hard time eating more than 2oz of dense Protein like chicken, shrimp, pork and beef. I am 20 months post op.
Now, other soft foods I can eat a lot so measuring for me is critical.

dinner tonight was supposed to be 2 oz of rotisserie chicken and a spoonful of mashed potatoes. I ate about half an ounce of chicken and felt full, so I stopped. Put the rest into a tiny plastic container for later.
#1. Yeah for me for stopping based on how I feel, and not how much I've eaten.
#2. Seriously? A half ounce of chicken? Why did I bother to get a plate and a fork again???

    I hate the full feeling.
I prefer to slowly eat the amounts I should and stop.
Meal is over. Check the time and note when my 30-45 minute window has passed before drinking Water.

The full feeling generally happens when you transition into the solid stage. Also become very aware of the strange symptoms that come just before you are full. These are things like sneezing, hiccups, mucous buildup, instant food taste changes. They are warning signs for dumping syndrome.

I have to say that's one definite perk about the surgery that I love so far is I don't have to worry about that horrible full feeling at least not right now as long as you stick to your portions you'll never feel stuffed or full you'll "feel satisfied" and it will last for hours and as long as you keep drinking your fluids and getting recommended Protein in the intervals your NUT gave you, you'll never realize that you're hungry.

Thank you fir your response. My surgeon said that the "full" feeling is what helps you loose weight. Learning how to eat slowly, and trigger that satiated full feeling is what I should aim for. I know every surgeon is so different and has different guidelines.

I think the big thing to realize is that exercise doesn't have to be boring, a chore, or hard work. It is much better if you can find something you enjoy and want to do - feel excited about getting to do - so you keep doing it. What sort of things did you like to do as a kid? Bike? Play a sport? Rollerskate? Climb trees (rockclimbing)? Swim? Go find out if it's something you still might like to do... you do not have to be good at it - just go have fun! ~

I love this so much!!!! It's so true, exercise does not have to be a bore or a chore. When we combine it with something we love it loses the "work" aspect and become something to look forward to.
I love to kayak because I love spying on nature... And fancy fishermen with overpriced gear who have no idea what they are doing and then get their lines caught in tree limbs and say lots of bad bad words and HA! thats proof they have no business being on the Water in the first place and....
Oh wait. I'm sorry. Where was I? Oh yeah.
Combining exercise with a hobby you have is a great idea. Even if it just feeds your inner nosy Mrs. Kravitz.

I am....surgery on the 7th as well. I started swapping food for Protein shakes a couple of weeks back and upped Water intake. I officially start today, but I'm nervous that I'll eat something I shouldn't. It's not too bad as I'm allowed sugar free Jello and lettuce and a few other veggies.
I suggest swapping out Breakfast with a shake, and just increasing your Water intake. It'll help. I also decided to eat some of my favorite meals that I knew I wouldn't have for a long time.

Wow your surgeon sounds like he needs a lesson or two in what is good exercise for someone who is 130 pounds overweight. You can help him learn by printing this article http://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/swim-workout-0
I swim at least 2 days a week and I also ride an adult tricycle about 4 to 7 miles 5 days a week. I can't walk without 2 canes or a walker and most of the time use an electric mobility, but I sure can bike and swim and love doing it. Forget the running and lifting weights for now and do something that is good for you and easier on your joints. Believe me I know.

Sugary Sweetheart reacted to VSGAnn2014 in Doc said weight loss plan was a waste of time. I need encouraged.
I have lost 100 pounds. I had VSG surgery nearly 21 months ago at age 68. I reached my weight loss goal (150 pounds) and then went on to lose another 15 pounds in the next 8 months. I've been maintaining at 135 pounds for nearly half a year now.
And my knee pain (arthritis and pain from various athletic injuries over the years) didn't completely go away until I lost those last 15 pounds.
And running (?!) when you're 130 pounds overweight is f**king nutty advice.
@@Inner Surfer Girl here has lost several hundred pounds and still has more to go. She (and others here) focused early on via Water exercises for obvious reasons.
There's another aspect to this, which is that exercise is necessary for health. You can't get around that. And you have to figure out something you can do that WILL exercise / challenge your body.
However ... you will ultimately lose all the weight you need to lose if (and only if) you eat the right foods and right amount of food that promotes the weight loss. There's a saying that goes (something) like this: You will lose your weight in the kitchen, not in the gym.
Finally, here is my #1 exercise rule: "Don't hurt yourself!"
I know you don't care for your surgeon and that you're limited to him due to your insurance situation and can't change surgeons. I understand that you trust his surgical abilities and plan to put up with him to get your surgery, but that you're (my language, not yours) considering a wider array of post-op advices to maximize your long-term WLS success.
I'd say to just nod carefully at his advices about exercise, continue to gather information, and make your own decisions.
And for the record, if I were 130 pounds overweight with severe pain in my feet no way in hell would I take up long-distance walking or any kind of running. That may (or may not) come later. I would sure hope you could walk a lot more easily and longer and faster down the line. But not now.

I spent the entire last week in another state with my Mom watching my niece and nephew. I was bored, stressed, did I mention all week with my Mom and tired. I decided to carb it up, not really carbs but sugar. I decided to have dessert, basically every night almost. My sleeve held me in check with portions but sugar was not an issue.
I gained 3 pounds.....3 3 is the magic number to slapping me back into my place. I am also now having to fight the sugar cravings I created again, annoying so annoying.
Some of you might think why go through all of this just to fall so far off the wagon. Well I still fight the mentality every day that one cupcake or package of M&Ms won't hurt. I have always ate when I'm happy, ate when I'm sad and ate for energy. I have not been allowed caffeine in many many many years so I used sugar as a boost. As for the why, I thought I wanted a week of freedom, but really it was a week back in the prison of sugar.
I played and I paid. So it's back to basics and back to feeling better, back to coloring in the lines.
I refuse to beat myself up though, I am a success and will be a long term success!!!
