Psyche eval and anti depression meds
I'm nervous that I might not get approved for the surgery by the psychiatrist that I see because I have a history of depression, anxiety and am a recovering addict. I've even been hospitalized for attempted suicide and once for drug induced psychosis. (Not the proudest moment in my life, needless to say.) This all happened years ago and I am on an anti depressant and an anti bipolar medicine that has stabilized my mood. I haven't been depressed or suicidal or used drugs since 2012. But what if they ask me about depression, prior drug use and hospitalization. Or if they get all my medical information and this causes them to fail me. Not sure what to do.

Dumping Syndrome
Autumn Riley Arnold replied to Autumn Riley Arnold's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&AYeah but how slow is slow enough? I read that it should only take 20 to 30 minutes to finish a meal in my nutritional handbook.

Excited, yet worried.
Thanks guys, for your responses and advice! I guess I'll just take it as it comes and try to stay away from a lot of sugar and carbs! That's pretty much all I can do!

Excited, yet worried.
That was a lot of great information. Very helpful. It does sound terrible, the foaming and saliva part. I'm worried about the sugar intake. We have whey protein powder in our house but there's 2 grams of sugar and I haven't checked how much carbs are in it but I'm sure there is some. I'm thinking of getting protein shakes that contain 0 sugar and carbs. However maybe the 2 grams of sugar isn't such a bad thing, so my body doesn't freak out when I DO eat something that has sugar in it. I just don't want to mess up the staples or whatever by vomiting a lot the first week out of surgery, you know?

Pain after surgery
In 2012 I got the gastric band. Because of extreme bleeding, they had to completely open me. Unfortunately, something went wrong with the band and it had to be removed the next day. I understand, because of that, the amount of pain I was in. So my worry and concern is even though we all handle pain differently, how much pain is there from the gastric bypass surgery and how long does it typically last?

6 Months Post Op & so happy
You've inspired me! I don't have a surgery date yet, but it's nice to read success stories and also to be reminded that it might not be nice at first and I might even feel regret. But after reading your story, I feel like it will be worth it! Thanks for sharing

Dumping Syndrome
I'm in the midst of completing my check list before I get a surgery date. I have 4 out of 8 things accomplished. I was just reading up on what to expect after the surgery and when I start eating again and what worries me is Dumping Syndrome. I have already told myself I will stay completely away from sugary and carbohydrate containing foods, yet I've read some articles that Dumping Syndrome can happen even if you stay away from these things. How often in eating small portions of healthy food, does someone suffer from Dumping Syndrome. How do I drink 64 ounces of Water and take in 80 grams of Protein in one day without experiencing this?

Wow, I didn't think I might not be able to even tolerate water! That's something to consider!

80 grams of protein, 64oz of water AND food in one day?
I like the timer idea. Do you think sipping every 5 minutes would be too much in a short amount of time?

Liquid diet
My doctor said I need to get in 80 grams of protein a day

True. I did read that the protein shakes I drink that will add up to 80 grams of protein will cover 32oz of water, however I still have a whole other 32 more ounces of water to go before I'm done for the day. That's not even mentioning when I'm on solid foods.

Drinking and eating
That's exactly what bothered me a bit. I love having a tall glass of milk with my meals. And I love to gulp. I think things will be SO different after our surgery. I wouldn't worry about doing it pre-op though. Remember you're going to have 1 full week after surgery of nothing but liquids, then another full week of full liquids and then yet another full week of soft foods. So I think you will ease yourself into it

This sounds overwhelming to me. Maybe it's actually not very hard to do and I'm making a big deal out of nothing, but with a teeny tiny stomach, I don't understand how I can fit all of this in? Are you guys able to do it with no problems?
