It’s been over 20 years since I had owned a skateboard. Went out yesterday and bought a board and some gear to get back into it.

    Hello,

I just now found this place. Better late than never I guess. on July 9th 2018 I weighed 508lbs. I am a 38 year old male who is 6'1. At the end of my rope I didn't know where to turn next. It was during one frustrated exchange with the CEO at my work during lunch that he asked why I didn't consider a weight loss surgery. I quickly replied I had, but the companies insurance didn't cover it. He made a promise to me that if I gave it my best shot he would make sure it was covered. I began working with my primary on the referral while he began working with our health insurance. Our plan year rolled on January 1 and the Sleeve and Bypass were included. I started with the local weight and wellness center in November and in May I completed the 6 months of required program required by the insurance. I am scheduled for the Sleeve on Monday June 10th 2019. As of today I am 428 lbs. I have been doing the two weeks of 3 Protein Shakes with a small 300 calorie meal as ordered by my nutritionist and have stuck to it rigidly.

So Monday's the big day. I have been given 4 weeks off paid from my work for recovery and now my nerves are kicking up. In seek of actual stories about what the days after surgery were like I asked my trusted friend google which lead me here. I have been reading everything for the past two days and I kind of wish my program had pointed me in this direction sooner.

I'm preparing myself for admission to a 45-day rehab for alcohol addiction post RNY gastric bypass. This is not the first round of treatment. I had my gatric bypass 10/1999 in San Diego CA at the facility operated by Drs Clark and Wittgrove. By nine months post op I lost 106 pounds and maintained that loss through 2008. However, during that time I also began experiencing and struggling with a dependence on alcohol.

Dr Clark explained that once I physically adapted to my new physiology, I could re-introduce various other foods and drinks, determining whether they would compel the infamous "dumping syndrome". Sugar was a definite "no consume", but when I went to my family's traditional Sunday brunch several months post op and slaked my thirst with a flute of champagne, I did not experience dumping syndrome. All I felt was a "super high" from the sip I took. After that, the game was on. My addiction began in earnest. Dumping Syndrome I was warned about. There were no flags waved before me about the possibilities of alcoholism and alcohol addiction. I am waving those flags now!

I first went into treatment April of 2008. I did not complete the relapse segment of treatment because I had scheduled reconstructive surgery for a work related injury. The surgery schedule overlapped that final stage of rehab. I think God walked with me through those years because I remained sober until my mother began dying in late 2016. It was then I began drinking volumes of wine that increased to the equivalent, on average, of 4 bottles of wine a day. Occasionally, I thought drinking vodka a better alternative than drinking wine. Don't ask me why. The mind of an addict. I returned to wine. Drug of choice. Drug of self-destruction.

One day I decided to try and find out why and and how my "take it or leave it " attitude toward alcohol became a "can't live without it " condition. On the internet, I discovered that, as gastric bypass patients, we are unique. In the same way that we each do not necessarily experience dumping syndrome, we do not experience the effects of alcohol the same.

Post gastric bypass, my physiology became hyper receptive to the effects of alcohol, particularly the initial high produced from its consumption. I believe there is no way on this planet that I am unique in this experience. I want others to know, as I now seek treatment a second time on June 13, 2019, that if this is happening to you, don't wait, don't blame yourself, it's your body reacting to the changes made. Be totally honest with those treating you. Only then, hopefully armed with what I'm writing here, can you get the medical help, psychological treatment and ongoing care that will make you whole.

Good evening, June Siblings! I am finally coherent enough to post. I had my surgery at 12:30 pm today. Praise God, I’m feeling pretty good. Ice chips and Water have been going down well. Pain is being managed well. Moved from bed to chair. Waiting on a Protein Shake to arrive. Went the the restroom with no issues. The only weird thing is that my lip is swollen. I seem to have a had an allergic reaction to something. No one is sure what, but they think it may be from the tube in my mouth during surgery. There were no complications. Although the doc found a hernia, which he took care of, as he thought it might contribute to reflux. Glad he did that. Anyway—just wanted update you all. I’ve appreciated reading all of your experiences and learned from everyone of you. I’m expected to be here for two days due to my hip and knee issues. I’ll post agin after the pain meds wear off😉 thanks for sending good thought and prayers my way!

I'll hopefully be having my surgery in one week. The diet isn't so bad (probably because I'm allowed a meal a day) but I have to say I'm getting realllly nervous. Never had surgery before. Hoping that I won't chicken out.

So yesterday was day 4 of my liquid diet and I took a tiny nibble of my daughters bbq chicken. I will not make that mistake again. I had so much gas and upset stomach just from that tiny bite that it will forever remind me of how God awful it is to not stick to the plan. Today is day 5 and just bought me some Powerade zero and had my Breakfast of my chocolate Protein Shake.

    Happy Saturday Everyone,

Day 3 of being stuck inside. I have kept the time by watching some of the movies I recorded during the week. Like the Misfits, Curse of Frankenstein and Cat on A Hot Tin Roof. Yup, the Purpledva is into Classic Hollywood. The Golden Age of Hollywood had its problems but they had style and class too.

I must be honest Clear Liquids are becoming quite old, quickly. And the need to have something more substantial is becoming rampant. I equate it to being a vampire during the series of True Blood. The hunger is fierce and will sometimes not make you such a nice person. I checked my blood sugar levels earlier today and they had dropped to 65 which is not the greatest. So, I opted for some fruit juice and now my readings are back to normal.

I am starting ask myself did I make the right decision by opting to have surgery. I mean, I am a social creature and the weather is so nice outside, etc. But I have to keep reminding myself that Rome was not built in a day. So I will gradually look to Soup to ease my fears/hungers. I haven’t been out walking, etc. Because I wanted to give myself time to really heal. So over the next week, I will be still taking it easy and gradually incorporating a walk or two in the coming week.

The Struggle is Fierce but the rewards are so worth it!!!

    Happy Friday Everyone,
Day 2 of being at home. I am starting to feel my usual self.☺️
I don't have much of an appetite. So I am just drinking mostly Water and tea and having an occasional s/f popsicle. The tenderness in my abdomen area is slowly going away. I weighed myself this morning ( I know I wasn’t going to do this until next week😏) and came in at 217. So all the extra gases, liquids, etc have taken a permanent vacation.😄
I noticed others mentioning having issues with GERD. For me, I notice that if I try to take a gallup instead of a sip then it comes back up as a big ol’ air pocket.😲 So sipping will be the thing to do. Have a Great Friday, Everyone!!!! And to all my other June Brothers and Sisters, I anxiously await your arrivals on the other side. Good Luck

So it sounds like I'm up next. I report tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m. with show time at 8:30. I think I'm ready. Just bustling around the house, trying to get things in order. My daughter is sleeping over with the grandparents so she can sleep in. I started this journey in December and it felt so far away. The last two weeks sped by. I'm ready for this next chapter with my fabulous new sleeve. Wish me luck!

Being a survivor of childhood sexual abuse (impregnated at 12),
I managed to overcome many buried years of trauma. I keep telling
myself that I can do this, too.
It feels good to have power now, particularly after having a long history
of it being denied to me. Those pedophilic bastards!
I'm encouraged by the kind words of support so far. I hope at some
time soon (in this forum) I will be able to be more a giver-of-support and
less of a taker-of-support. For now, though, I will allow myself the guilty pleasure of
"receiving" until I can reciprocate, in a genuine way, all of the kindness offered me.
