heidikat72 reacted to 4MRB4PHOTO in Unfounded Statistics & Percentages
There are excellent sources of information out there with great statistical data that was collected in a scientifically acceptable and accurate manner. There are also well published documents which are not skewed to support someone's hidden agenda.
What I don't get are when people throw out WLS numbers and percentages without accurately verifying them or just make them up because they believe, from their non-researched opinion, that it is accurate .
At the very least this could be misleading, at the worst it could affect someone's health or influence their decision on what WLS procedure they should get (or to avoid it all together), scare them into assuming there is a very high risk or a false sense of security that there is no risk from the procedure or influence vitamins/supplements & quantities they should/should not take, to name a few without consulting a physician.
If you don't believe me, 90% of the people agree with me, 15% disagree and 5% aren't sure.
(I know this adds up to more than 100%)

I am so, so sorry for your loss. Words cannot express how sorry I am yet I cannot even begin to imagine what you and your family must be going through. This is just awful.
Of course you are an emotional wreck. That is so understandable.
Thank you for sharing your struggles with us. If I were there in person I would put my arms around you and give you a big hug.
Not that you are necessarily ready to hear advice from someone who has absolutely no idea what you are going through but I would like to throw out some suggestions. Hopefully something will be helpful,
Do you belong to a church or have a faith community? If so, please see if your pastor can provide some grief counseling or refer you somewhere.
Since your granddaughter is seeing a therapist (which is great) you might also want to see if you can find individual counseling and/or family counseling. As in any crisis where other people depend on you, you have got to put on your oxygen mask first. Until you get the support you need, you won't be in a position to provide support to anyone else.
Although eating junk food may provide you some immediate pleasure, it will not make you stronger or bring your son back or change the situation. This is when you need to be your healthiest. Treat your body with kindness.
Exercise would be a great way to help channel your emotions and express them in a healthy way. I heard a story lately about a group of grieving mother's who started a boxing club -- boxing helped them to deal with the grief, anger, etc.
Again, I am so glad you reached out to us. Marshaling all of your resources is what will help you the most in my opinion. There is nothing wrong with asking for and accepting help.
You and your family are in my prayers.
Let me know what I can do to help.

heidikat72 got a reaction from Inner Surfer Girl in Doctor say can't gain any weight during 6 months nutritional visits
My insurance requirement is the same - I don't have to lose weight in the 6 month period but I absolutely cannot gain during this time. So my strategy for not gaining was to go ahead and adopt healthier eating habits now and gradually reduce my calorie intake over the 6 months. That and gradually increase exercise. The insurance company wants to see that you are commited to making a life-style change.
I would suggest talking to the nutritionist you are seeing for the monthly visits and discuss your PCOS condition and ask for suggestions about how to insure you don't gain weight during this time. Journal your food and exercise for a couple days and have the nutritionist look over that too and make suggestions.

One of my favorite tuna salads is the Mediterranean tuna salad at Whole Foods.
    My approximation:
    Tuna
A couple of pieces of marinated artichoke hearts
    Kalamata olives
    A spoonful of feta cheese
Some red onion (if I have it)
    Greek seasoning
A dab of mayo or aioli
I also make a "tuna melt" with some greens Beans, tuna, and grated cheese on top, heated up to hear the green Beans and melt the cheese. (The ranch flavored packet of tuna works great for this one.)

Nearly six miles this morning because newest dog Coco was being a stubborn bitch and I couldn't get her to come to me to get her lead on so just kept walking. She did however find the following-11 duck eggs hidden in the bracken. We looked then left so that mummy duck could return
Maybe Coco has got a different agenda from me as regards on how far we walk. She is spark out on the sofa now whilst I have loads that I need to get done. Definitely a dog's life in this house!!!

Since being sleeved last October my dog walks have got longer and longer as I have dropped the pounds and got fitter. I'm loving every minute of my weight loss journey and each NSV which is achieved. Just thought that I would post a couple of pics for all you Americans using this site. These memorials are in the Royal Park, Bushy Park where I walk most days as it is only five minutes walk down the road from where I live. Some of our more elderly residents can remember the day the Yanks came to town and still tell stories of how they brought some cheer to the local kids - mostly in the form of gum and candies, but also in organising activities and film shows for them. So you see, even in this corner of Surrey, there is a place for memories of our American cousins.

heidikat72 reacted to Sajijoma in I got my labs back today from my checkup!
I had my yearly checkup last week and everything looked good in the office, but I didn't get my labs back til today and I am please to announce I do not have diabetes, high chloresterol, high triglycerides or any of that bad stuff! I could dance for joy! My only "problems" if you can call them that, is that my Iron is a little low and my B12 is a lot high. LOL so I have a message in to my NUT and waiting to see what she wants to do with that. But I am soooo excited to not have diabetes because my parents, my living siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, and my grandparents when they were all alive had diabetes and I had gestational diabetes in my last pregnancy, so to walk out today with perfect health and perfect numbers was AMAZING! I am the first one in my family to almost reach 40(still got 9 more months) without having diabetes!!! It was the NSV of all NSV's! This surgery really has made my life better!

So I had my surgery and it was a success! My mom did take me to my surgery (got me there a half hour late then blamed me for not rushing her enough even though I did and got yelled for it) I called my grandpa after my surgery and he was being nice to me.I'm alright, feeling good actually although my blood pressure is a little high and heart rate is kinda low but I don't feel it and have been walking around with no problem. I have so much energy as well. Once again thank you all for your support and encouragement as well as kind words with it I regained my confidence and hope. For that I love you all!!!

heidikat72 got a reaction from Sharkey23 in I need to do this, no matter what
Definitely take the time to focus on yourself and your health. I commend you on realizing this. So often when dealing with tragedy of any sort, we do just the opposite and spiral out of control (I know I did). I would suggest seeking some counseling. Not only to deal with the grief but also all the changes you'll be going through after surgery including working on the "head hunger" that will still be telling you that you want to eat that whole T-bone steak.
And definitely come to this site whenever you need additional support (and to update us on your journey). There are a lot of truly wonderful people on this site who inspire with their stories as well as give compassionate real advice - even when sometimes it can be hard advice to hear. also, letting your wife read some of the posts on here may help alleviate some of her worry.

Thanks! Can't wait to read it! My final straw to committing to surgery was this- last summer we were touring college campuses with my oldest son. I'd go, but couldn't "tour". Between my rheumatoid and the excess weight I just couldn't walk even a block!
Never again. This fall when we take him to school I plan on walking every inch of his campus!!! ( University of Iowa). And NEXT summer my daughter will do her campus tours and I expect to be with her every step of the way!

I wholeheartedly agree with the stirring recommendation - makes it smoother in my opinion. The non-fat greek yogurt can be a little "grainy" in texture in my opinion but I found that stirring it a LOT helped tremendously with that.
Also, if you aren't opposed to artificial sweetener, try flavoring it with sugar-free Torani syrups.< /p>

Light and fit has a good low carb Greek yogurt. My suggestion though is to stir vigorously before eating,it will make it not so think.

heidikat72 got a reaction from Abrandnewlife in 6 months weigh in appointments with nutritionist or PCP ?
My insurance allows for either with your PCP or with the nutritionist/surgeon's office. I opted for the monthly meetings with the nutritionist/surgeon - that way I could see the surgeon each month and ask him any questions I had and I figured the nutritionist could look over my food diary for the month and give me advice better than my PCP could. and they did warn us that if we go through our PCP to make sure the PCP wrote up individual reports each month and not just one assessment at the end. Apparently some PCP's have done just one report at the end and the insurance didn't count it as 6 individual visits.
To be on the safe side, I would suggest contacting your insurance to see if they have a preference of one over the other.

Thanks for the comments and support. yes, logically I KNOW it is just about improving myself. The whole reason I'm in the class is because of how unfit I am and yes, at my weight exercise at first is going to be a struggle. Like I said, logically I know all this...emotionally was a different story yesterday. But today when I leave work, I'll be putting my sneakers on and walking...and walking and walking. And next Thursday at 7am I'll be right there in Philly sweating and huffing and puffing.
And honestly, I'm kinda surprised I was able to hold a plank for even a second and was able to get up off the floor without needed something for support to pull myself up. So there is that.

After an appointment today I stopped at Trader Joe's to pick up groceries.
One of the miracles of my surgery is that I can now do my own shopping. I had gotten so immobile pre-op that I had to have someone else buy my groceries.
Trader Joe's is so smart. They put their flowers and plants right by the front door. I bought with abandon: cut tulips, cut iris, a succulent, and a pot of hyacinths.
It occurred to me that pre-op, most of my cart would have been full of pre-packaged foods and starches. Today, it was full of flowers, fresh berries, yogurt, and other healthy, fresh whole foods.
    One of my favorite poems:

How do you feed your soul at the grocery store?
