Airstream88 got a reaction from Lillie Lou in Surgery for Hiatal Hernia, Gallbladder and Gastric sleeve at one time
I had an umbilical hernia repaired and my gallbladder removed at the same time as my RNY surgery. I think I may have had a little additional pain from the gall bladder removal.

Airstream88 got a reaction from Ldyvenus in 3 months post op - discouraged
I'm 8 months out and have averaged a weight loss of 16 pounds per month. I eat somewhere between 1200 - 1500 daily.
At 3 months I was told to be beteen 800 - 1000 calories. The way you get it in is to eat 5 small meals a day - every 3 hours or so. That's the plan I was given by my NUT and it seems to be working very well for me. Don't forget to eat some good fats - nuts, olive oil, nut butters. I'm allowed 3 servings daily. They are good for you and help get that calorie count up.

    Dear scale,
I never even knew you before I started this process almost 4 months ago. You were just an enemy I had to endure at random times so a medical professional could judge me before they spoke to me. I often bore through sickness and pain alone just to evade your reality. Because it wasn't my reality. Through my lying eyes, the mirror didn't show what you claimed I was.
When my eyes opened I considered you a friend for a time, but only when you showed me what I wanted. Now, these last 2 weeks, you have become my crutch and my obsession. I visit you every morning and mourn when you have not changed for me. I became dependent on seeing you and I have demanded more from you than you should have to give.
So, dear friend and closest enemy, our frequent visits have come to an end. Your 2 week solitary confinement begins immediately.
    You acquaintance only,
    Me

Airstream88 got a reaction from catwoman7 in Sleeve or Bypass
I took 2400g of Ibuprofen daily and the the largest does of Meloxicam for my knees prior to the Bypass. My surgeon said that once the weight was off, if I still had issues they would prescribe a non-NSAID. I have lost 120 pounds and I haven't had to take anything but Extra Strength Tylenol for my knees. Just losing the weight helped my back and knees immensely.

Airstream88 got a reaction from Pistolkisstal in Dumping
Dumping syndrome, also called “rapid gastric emptying”:
Happens when food (especially sugar) moves too quickly from the stomach into the small intestines Is common after bariatric procedures that bypass a large portion of the small intestine, like gastric bypass surgery Comes in two forms: early dumping (30 minutes after eating) and late dumping (over time) Includes symptoms like nausea, diarrhea, bloating, fainting, anxiety, and weakness Is usually treated effectively by diet changes and/or lying down after eating (does not usually require medical treatment) Is often thought of as a “good thing” by weight loss surgery patients since it discourages poor diet choices

Airstream88 got a reaction from Finally17 in How Do You Monitor Portions?
I measure things like Cereal and milk to make sure I have the Protein count right. I eyeball protein per the Deck of Cards guideline or use the serving info on the package (for shrimp, etc). I buy nuts and popcorn in pre-portioned bags for convenience. My NUT only gives protein and fluid goals so I rarely count calories and never carbs - just eat the servings she recommends. I log my food in a book I got from Amazon but only count my protein and Fluid intake. That's as much obsession about food I can handle in a day.

It's been 9 months since my RNY bypass... I have lost a total of 105lbs but have been stuck in a stall for a long while!
    Starting weight: 280lbs
    Surgery Weight: 267lbs
    Current weight: 175lbs
I'm just taking it day by day and focusing on my food, Water and exercise. I feel great and I know the stall will pass! I'm not done with this journey yet!

I think she meant Crepey skin. Like the skin on very old people's arms when they have lost all the fat and there's nothing filling out the extra skin.

Airstream88 got a reaction from blondie66 in Leakage Years After Surgery
My surgeon tested for leaks the morning following my surgery. I think as long as you follow the food stages as prescribed and don't eat things your stomach isn't healed enough for, leaks should not occur. One patient at my surgeon's went to Taco Bell on the way home from the hospital and had a taco. Another's family ordered pizza on the day she came home which she ate (talk about sabotage and disfunctional families!). Both ended up right back in the hospital.

Airstream88 got a reaction from crocodoxie in Question about Digesting Food
In all my nutrition classes, no one ever asked this question. The stomach barely digests the food after RNY as there is very little Gastric Acid in the new tiny stomach. The upper intestines are bypassed so it's the lower intestines that get barely digested food. How long that takes, I have no idea.
My NUT did say that the reason for eating every 3 - 4 hours ( without Snacks in between) is that's how long it takes dense food like Protein to leave your stomach.

Airstream88 got a reaction from blondie66 in Sleeve or Bypass
Agree with blondie66. I originally wanted the sleeve but ended up getting the bypass. My surgeon recommended Bypass due to the amount I had to lose, but left it up to me. After reading hundreds of peoples experiences with both, I decided the Bypass was the best option after all. I wanted 1 operation, I didn't want to have to worry about developing GERD, I wanted the restriction on sugar and fat, and I didn't mind having to take Vitamins and supplements for the rest of my life. My pre-diabetes and blood pressure are now normal (Blood sugar almost immediately).

WLS isn't a miracle cure and it won't solve your self-esteem issues. You may also still crave those sugary, salty, fatty foods afterwards. I would say get your issues worked out with your therapist and then pursue your options. I am so glad I had my Gastric Bypass surgery and only wished I had gotten it sooner before arthritis screwed up my knees, back and neck. I feel so much better.

My NUT recommends eating 4 - 5 mini meals a day every 3 - 4 hours. She doesn't want us to be hungry in between meals.
This might help with your hunger. Also if you are more active, you probably need more calories. Add a healthy snack in between 2 of your 3 meals.

Airstream88 got a reaction from biginjapan in Hair loss and perms
The Hair loss is the normal shedding we all experience regardless of surgery. The problem is the hair isn't growing back because the body is using the limited nutrition we are feeding it to take care of more important things. My stylist has discouraged me from doing anything that might cause further distress to my hair follicles. I do have my roots done to hide the grey which helps make my hair look less thin but no highlights or perming.

Probably. The fullness feeling happens much higher up post-op than pre-op. Normally I feel it right between my breasts. It gets worse if you eat that 1 or 2 more bites than you should. That happened to me yesterday and I felt miserable until it went away.

Yes it's normal to feel nervous. Any surgery is a big deal, especially because this one changes your life forever. I won't lie and say there aren't foods that I miss, but now at 7 months I can pretty much eat any healthy thing I want and small bits of things like chocolate from time to time. It's hands down the best thing I've ever done for myself. My quality of life has improved dramatically. The arthritis in my knees and back is so much better. Since I waited so long to do the RNY, I won't ever be running or jumping again but just being able to walk more than 10 feet pain free is game changer.

Meet your targets consistently and make sure you are eating enough calories. At 3 months I was eating 800 - 1000 calories daily per my surgeon's recommendations. It helps to get the Protein in by eating mini-meals every 3 - 4 hours.

You won't start really feeling the restriction until you start eating solid foods. This is why you need to measure out your portions. Make sure you are getting in your fluids as well. I stayed home from work for 5 weeks and was still exhausted when I got home every day. Even though the incisions are healed on the outside, your insides are still healing up and your body is having to survive on 1/4th of the calories you probably ate pre-op.

Airstream88 got a reaction from kimba21539 in Finally met with my nutritionist today
I had my RNY last October. I am eating both salads and fruit. At first eating real food is strange. It feels heavy in the new stomach and can cause some minor discomfort. And something you may try one month may not feel so great but then a month or two later it's fine. You just need to chew well, eat slow and not give up. At almost 7 months I can eat most Proteins, romaine lettuce, cucumbers, pineapple, strawberries, grapes, tomatoes, broccoli, thin asparagus, spinach, grilled zucchini, etc. I eat toasted multigrain breads, multigrain crackers but haven't really tried any rice or Pasta to speak of. The thing with salads is you should really eat the Protein first and then you don't have as much space after. So lots of times I have lots of salad left over.
