spstarla69 reacted to SpecialK1960 in Slimming? Vomit?
I am about 4 weeks out and am having a problem with the SLIMES (we have got to get a better name, but I will admit it is perfectly descriptive). I guess as I am transitioning to more solids, I am eating too fast. It seems to hit me when I am reading or eating lunch at work. I think what happens is that I am distracted by what I am doing and not paying attention to eating slowly. I am taking little bits, but not paying attention to the speed. I do not eat too much because i am only putting a small portion on the plate.
For me it feels like you have to burp, but can't. I have on 4 occasions thrown-up. But it is not really like throwing up, it is more like burping up a ton of siliva - sounds wicked gross - really not that bad. It is nothing like real throwing up where you feel out of control. And it feels like it is coming from the bottom of your feet. For me anyway, it is just like a ... bluuuuurp - and I am done. No food is coming up at all. And as soon as I have blorped (technical medical term) I feel instantly 100% back to normal.
Weird, but sounds like it seldom lasts for more than a few months. I am not sure if it cures itself, or if blorping simply teaches us to eat slower and the cause is then eliminated.

Slime is extra thick and slimy saliva. When sliming I produce the "slime" in excessive quantities. I would need to spit every minute or so. It's super gross. On one occasion I tried to vomit in order to move past the sliming. It was the weirdest experience. I vomitted up very buoyant bubbles of slime. Weirdest thing ever!

spstarla69 reacted to AvaFern in Long term slow loser results?
I was a slow loser, especially near the end. It took me exactly 1 year and 7 months to hit goal, which was from 237 to 129, or 108 pounds. If I divided it out, this works out to 5.68 pounds a month. At a year out I was down from 237 to 153 which is 84 pounds and works out to 7 pounds a month. At 7 months, I was 67 pounds down, which works out to 9.5 pounds a month roughly. So...my loss did slow significantly over time. It took me from December 2014 to April 2015 to go from 134-129...the last 5 pounds were a beast. Since then I've dropped an extra 3 pounds and I seem to fluctuate between around 126-129.

I was disappointed in the responses I got. Im not 1+ year our But I've pretty much got my answer.
I'm now 9 months out and I can say for sure that the honeymoon period is over. My weight loss has slowed dramatically. I find that despite still having restriction and not being able to eat much, it's almost like I don't have the sleeve. Ive significantly increased my activity and I watch my food like I did pre surgery and have barely lost a pound this past month. So I think in my case it's safe to say that yes you can get even slower at losing lol

if you ate half a roll and gained weight that would have to be Water - not fat.
while eating bread in the immediate post op is not desirable - it is also not the end of the world. Pre op, would you have stopped at half a roll?
just move on and see how today goes. follow your plan, but you also have to live life. I don't know how restrictive your doctor is but I have a piece of oatmeal toast several mornings a week with my egg. it helps keep me regular. I no longer feel the desire to eat half the loaf. this is the miracle of my sleeve.

Ihave thoroughly enjoyed reading all these posts today..they had me ROTFLMAO! But just to put it into perspective for you all...I am still preop and today I ate 6 slices of bacon with 3 eggs and 2 slices of toast..then washed it down with 2 cran-orange mimosos..then I had 6 McDonald's nuggets with a large fry and large coke..and to top off my evening I had a 15oz Ribeye with a BIG baked tater and a salad that would be enough for most of you for a full day. And then had the audacity to have 2 chocolate chip cookies...so long story short your little cheats are so small in comparison to those of us waiting to walk a mile in your shoes. And now I have to climb in bed miserable and over stuffed. God Bless you all for your honesty and truth in this process...

Straws are problematic at the beginning because of the trapped air, but they are fine later on. The rules tend to be a bit draconian at the beginning for good reason. Patient is healing and doctor does not want to be sued.
Here is my short list of dirty little secrets
    1. Take up to 800 mg of prescribed ibuprofen for inflammation. I have taken a lot of different NSAID to deal with it from naproxen to flexor patch to voltaren gel. Still alive.
    2. Drink from straws occasionally. Not too often. Only happens if there happens to be a straw sitting in a cup and I am hella thirsty after working out or feeling dehydrated. Still alive.
    3. Drink the occasional SF monster or Rockstar. I like the flavor and energy. While drinking, the fleeting thoughts of carbonation goes through my head in addition to battery acid. And then they disappear. Still alive.
I do not have any real eating dirty secrets (except for the occasional binge on energy squares). My diet has always been high Protein and low carb. I stuck to plan and followed doctors orders until month 7 when weight loss phase ended. The stress from micromanaging eating details is just not for me. I used to track Protein (80+ g), Water (90+ oz) and carbs (20-30 g or lower). in my head until month 7. Now I make sure to hit broad targets for those 3 items (150+ g protein, 120+ oz Water, 100+ g good carbs). I tend to eat more good carbs now to fuel working out hard. Eating what i am supposed to eat is pretty much like breathing. No struggle. I had my surgery July 2nd 2012 and weight on adage 175 today with between 13-15 body fat %.

No reply. But I wanted to once again say hcg did work for me 6 years ago went from 246 to 199 after 2 rounds. Tried again last year did 2 rounds got to 230s. But after a few months of chgd eating. Sticking with more natural foods adding good fats back in and I still slowly gained to my highest weight of 267. I am still eating well. Cut my portions and am excercising. Lost 12 pounds on preop diet. But really need to lose 100 more. So this is better option for me long term. Oh and I have met many many people who have regained on hcg who have stuck to proticol. If you only have 50 or less pounds to lose hcg is great option. Although my Dr. Kept telling me it wasn't healthy for me. I also have many comorbidities and need knee surgery. Got to get this weight off. I am more 56 and want a long life.

I know this is from 2010 but I wanted to put my 2 cents in. I did hcg 3 times. Each with injections and 42 days. Followed thru with each phase. Lost 50 pounds each time. Only to regain. Now 7 years later and 60 pounds heavier, I realize I need more. Am in preop diet stage. Soon as I lose last 8 pounds, I can schedule surgery. Aiming for april. I have done HCG and was wondering about it with the sleeve. I always end up going back to sugar. My sis has done great and maintain, being smaller at a higher weight, than she ever was without HCG. She and I both have done/do the homeopathic HCG. It has always dones well for me. I was asking a friend who mentors people about HCG what she thought about taking after surgery. She agreed with my thinking that it would be perfect. It is releasing 2000-4000 calories per day of fat when on the 500 cal diet. Well, there is no room for cheating when your stomach is small.
BTW, it does wonders for the skin and losing in the right place.
So, did any of you end up doing this last year after being sleeved.?

ah, why didn't I think of this!!! I did this HCG diet in the summer, lost weight but gained it back. But now that I can hardly eat, well it would be perfect to start on this diet again, I won't even be able to eat the wrong things because of my VSG... good thinking, I do have 1/2 a bottle left!

I will say this about HCG. It was a miracle in the way it took the fat off. It knew exactly where I needed to lose and where I didn't. For example I have fat legs. I lost in the legs and not in the boobs. My calves went down several inches.

@@SiSSi829 I may take heat for this.. but two months of liquids is insane. If you think you feel malnourished and weak now.. I can't imagine what it'll be like in two months.. I know this because quite honestly I felt how you did and not really like a full human being again until two weeks when I was able to have pureed food.. the Protein drinks and Soups and the like just didn't give me enough energy. I would consider looking at other plans from other hospitals and picking something more moderate... - like a common one is 2 weeks full liquid, 2 weeks puree, 2 weeks soft food, then reintroduce new foods gradually.
Like I said people may massacre me for suggesting to go against your doctor's wishes but I can't even imagine how on earth they would expect you to do two months of liquids.. most people struggle to do two or three weeks... You may find the need to educate yourself because it's better to be prepared and educated about what to do if you just can't handle it than wind up eating bacon again next time. This happened to me.. by 7 days in I was so sick of liquid I was either going to not get anything to drink that day or I was going to have some real food.. I just couldn't do it.. So I researched what I should try at the next phase (puree) and did the most gentle options (scrambled eggs with cheese, cottage cheese, and refried Beans pureed) it helped a lot and I know it was the right decision for me PERSONALLY whether my doc would have been okay with it or not.. And I was prepared for that because I'd researched what came next.. If this happens to you again.. and you have some research down.. then you'll know what you can have puree wise if you become desperate. Just my thoughts.
Also.. don't beat up on yourself.. bacon wasn't maybe the best choice.. but all you can do is go forward from here.. don't feel depressed and give up! 20 pounds since June 15th is a LOT I'm losing slower than many people - 26 pounds total since my pre-opp diet began on May 18th and Surgery may 31st.. but I believe that even though I may be slow going... It'll stay off better if it comes off gradually. I'm losing enough to still feel successful.. think about what you'd be losing without surgery - it'd come off far slower than 20+ pounds per month. Hang in there!

It was worth it for me. I lost around 95% of my excess weight, but even 60% would have been a huge improvement. However, those are statistics they give you. Some people lose 100%, and some lose almost none, or lose it and gain it all back. It does help you lose and maintain, but in the end, it's up to you. I have to work hard to lose and maintain, and I do have to track every bite I eat. I know that I'm one of those people who could gain it all back. We each are unique, and have to find our own way to success. This is only worth it if you are willing to do the work.

I'm just going to put this out there. Surgery to lose "only" 90lbs could be the difference between living another 20 years versus living another 40 years. Is it worth it if you could extend your life by 20 years?

Many sleeved patients lose over 100 and even 200 lbs. Doctors give you conservative numbers or averages. If you realistically think that you can stick to the nutrition plan you are on now and exercise then there is no need to go through surgery. For most of us dieting and exercise without the help of surgery are just not enough. Do you know the stats for keeping the weight off with just dieting and exercise? Under 10%. I never was one of those 10%. Surgery was my only long term option.

My doc told me to increase Protein, not decrease. So weird! He also said if you're in a stall, to up the calories for 2-3 days, then drop back down, that should get things moving again. Plus exercise is important, maybe switch up your routine?

First picture is almost at my heaviest, then purple shirt is 11 days before surgery and black & white top is last week.

Remember that everyone is different!! So even if someone's weight is melting off, your may not. Mine isn't, and for a few days I was really upset. The first week it did, but i'm ending week 3 now I weigh in on Sunday, we'll see if it's moved. Last time I dared to step on it, it had gone up 2lbs, but remembering what my nutritionist told me, I measure myself too and I've lost inches, but not the lbs. More likely since I've been back in the gym this last week, it's muscle gain.
Search for 'stall' on the board, it happens to everyone at some point. Usually it's about 6-8 weeks out, which sounds about right for you. Hang in there, you will break through! Also, change up foods too if you're a creature of habit and eat the same thing every day, that can really help as well.

People don't have gallbladder issues because of the surgery. They have it because they lose weight in a short period of time. Before I got the sleeve, I had lost 100 pounds within 12 months and had to have my gallbladder removed so luckily I don't have to worry about it.

spstarla69 reacted to Jadane_dm in How long did it take from your first consultation until surgery day?
So my surgeon told me they basically require you to wait so they can pick out the weak basically the people who can't handle the process and be successful in the pre op weight loss and also so the insurance company can save money. I agree it isn't right. However at first I looked at the six months as a burden but it gave me time to contemplate if I was ready to make such a major life change, and it gave me time to make the lifestyle change. I'm just thinking of people who have their surgery within a few weeks of their first consult. It must be really hard to go from eating whatever you want, smoking, drinking and whatever else you do, to being completely restricted for the rest of your life. I'm happy that I got these 6 months to slowly decrease my alcohol intake, stop smoking hookah, and change my eating habits. It would be so hard to stop cold turkey.
