My boyfriend has actually mentioned something like this, though I haven't noticed, which is odd because my sense of smell has been near superhuman levels since surgery. I smell Water when I turn the sink on. But he says that I don't smell better or worse, just different. It would make sense, because our bodies go through HUUUUUGE metabolic and hormonal changes.

It's not that it will kill you, but drinking after eating flushes the food out of the pouch, making it so that you feel hungry again. Basically, it's like sabotage to the surgery. Once you get into the routine of waiting 30 minutes after eating to drink, it won't seem like too big of a deal. =) You just gotta keep the routine up and re-train your brain.

Are you allowed or should you? Two different questions.
You are allowed to eat anything you'd wish and you may or may not suffer unpleasant side effects. Should you have cake? Depends.
I've had cake but I didn't have issues with sweets prior to surgery. A piece of cake isn't going to give me permission to binge on cake or other foods.

If you had RNY gastric bypass surgery, then you have to cut out fats and sugars from you diet for awhile. This is because the part of your stomach that normally processes these fats and sugars have been cut away and your body can no longer handle these, otherwise you will experience dumping syndrome.
As time goes on, your body will change and your intestines will learn to process these foods and then you will be able to eat these again. This will occur around 1 year post-op.
So during this first year, you will be able to eat meat, it is just limited to very lean cuts with little fat. You may find that eating meats will be rough on your new stomach. For example, you may want to boil chicken breast in a pot for several hours on low until the meat is so tender that it comes apart readily with a fork. I personally relied on softer foods, such as homemade high Protein chili and Soups. They went down easier. So you are welcome to make foods without artificial ingredients for your meals.
But the most important requirements of the program are meeting your Protein, Vitamin and Fluid requirements. food IS SECONDARY. Your body is converting stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.

Amen, honey! Hahaha I've lost 48 pounds since the 3rd of September! Granted, I had complications, but the surgery is doing it's job as my tool. The taste will go away eventually.

Best thing I ever did was sleep in a recliner for a month. I couldn't sleep at all in my bed the pain was terrible. If you don't have one and don't know somebody you can borrow from, I'd go to a Rent a Center. I promise you'll sleep again. I hope you feel better soon!

Does it kind of taste like nail polish remover? Or bitter? And is there kind of a coating of the awful taste in your mouth? It's called ketosis. Your body, in it's new weight loss, is releasing ketones which can cause that awful taste. I'm a month out and still taste it occasionally, but it used to be so bad that I'd feel like puking in the mornings.

kmc0812 reacted to funkecoldmedina in Really having a hard time. My food addict is truly getting the best of me.
I am so proud of you! It takes a lot for someone to say they have a food addiction. You are even taking steps to help yourself. That is extremely courageous. I think we just need to learn to take it one meal at a time. I am right there with you! I love food. I love eating it, I love thinking about it, I love talking about it, and I love cooking it. It is so hard to make healthy choices when eating is such a normal part of life. We have to eat to live, that's what makes food addiction so difficult. I know for me, I have to make a choice at every meal. Am I going to let food control me or am I strong enough to say that I make the decisions. I completely understand where you are coming from but we can do this! So many other people have taken control of their lives and we can too. I think seeing a therapist is such a huge part of this and can really help you become successful. Best of luck to you! I am rooting for you

Nikikins- so glad to read your post! Had a full day pre-op appointment (surgery September 23) and I've been vacillating between tears and anxiety. Same worries you have. Glad to know I'm not as certifiable as I thought! It's so odd as this is something I really want and am eager for but going through some questioning of my sanity. My shrink has his work cut out for him!

I'm pre-op too. I don't have a date yet but wanted to be pro-active. I have fought so long and hard for this surgery that I'm training my mind and body to change forever. Whenever I look at food I want and my stomach starts acting up, I just think about my journey so far. I'm doing the pre-op diet to prove what I know about myself, and because I'm standing in faith. I'll be getting my surgery date any day now.
I've also been getting more active, working up to walking till I'm walking at least a couple thousand steps. Because of my knees, I have to walk a few minutes at a time and work up to 30 minutes. I'm waiting for my Fitbit to come in the mail. I'm so excited for all of us!

Awesome! I know that feeling. I purposely put chocolates in front of me while I was watching tv. I know this is weird, but I would see a commercial with a fit lady and then look at the chocolates. I kept telling myself "Chocolates or that body. Those are your options." It definitely tested my willpower out!
Congratulations! Can't wait to share this journey with you!

You are all awesome! Thank you! I've definitely experienced the head ache and hating life. Hahaha my poor boyfriend is a saint. I've been more emotional the lady five days than I have been the last two years. Have you experienced this at all? The Mexican Tortilla Soup broth sounds sloppily good! I'll have to try it! =) Walker is my middle name! Hahaha I walk at least half an hour a day, so I'm glad to hear it helps. Thank you all for your support! I can't wait to share all of our journeys! =)

@@kmc0812 Umm I've been an emotional rollercoaster since I got a surgery date! LOL
The one downside to being on this diet is that I have no energy. I can do my daily walks, and chores, but once all is said and done I am POOPED. I find myself falling asleep at the most random times of day. This makes me cry, because I feel so tired all the time.
Then there's all of the fears & worries I have of surgery. I know the rewards far outweigh the risks, but the sheer realization alone that this life changing thing is going to happen to me is scary and exciting all at the same time and this makes me cry.
Then there's worries about post-surgery problems, physically and emotionally and mentally. This makes me cry.
Then there's worries about relationships with people changing after surgery, this makes me cry.
Then there's commercials on TV that I normally wouldn't cry at, but now I'm crying.
I think I'm just hungry. LOL
But seriously, what you're going through is normal I think. I'm still pretty new at this myself but have read so many posts on here that make me feel so much better. Everyone on here is supportive and informative and welcoming. It has made this journey for me so much easier knowing that I am not alone, and even after all is said and done, I can still come back here for help & support.
Keep your head up! You're stronger than you think! xo
