  2. It makes me so sad to be locked out of the vets' forum for another 6 months. Being over a year out, I no longer really belong in the newbie forum except to offer encouragement and advice. People I can actually relate to are all hanging out in the cool kids room. :P

Move over Cervidae, I am sitting outside the cool kids room too. The ones I want to talk to are not coming outside to play because of finger pointing. I don't blame them. Like said above...I don't come here and much. I miss a lot of the "Vets".

  3. Today is 12 months post-RNY! A whole year already, it's mind-boggling! My sloowww loss in the last several months picked up quite a bit this month and I lost 12 pounds. I'm down 180 since surgery and 243 pounds since my heaviest two years ago. The difference two years can make... :) Expect a longer and more detailed post later today, with before and current pictures! Thank you so much for all of your support and kindness, everyone! Couldn't have made it here without you. <3

I'm glad no one was here with me to see me breaking down and sobbing like a toddler but my goodness! I can't believe I'm here, and it actually happened! 5. I'm freaking out a little, in a good way! Tonight I was able to hobble onto the scale because my curiosity got the better of me, since I haven't been able to weigh myself in a while because of my knee surgery and huge bulky brace. I'm exactly 200 pounds lighter than my highest weight! I am so, so happy to have made yet another enormous milestone! I love all of you. Thank you for being so kind and supportive. Onward to my next milestone in 21 pounds: losing half of my highest bodyweight. Can't stop, won't stop. :)http://imgur.com/NOpEeIs

  10. You know, the only food-related thing I still struggle with is salt. I crave salt and salty foods like crazy, want to douse everything I eat with it. Not only that, but hot sauce/soy sauce is basically addictive to me, to the point where I have a very strong desire to just drink it! Just goes to show you, surgery doesn't "fix" you. You still have to make the decision every moment of every day that your health matters more than your desire to eat. It's a long, winding, never-ending road, but also a rewarding one.

I crave salt too - and sometimes give in and have a little bit on my finger. Have you tried any of the really cool special salts they have around now? Pink salt, black salt, smoked salt, truffle salt, etc... They each have their own nuanced flavor.

    4. Cervidae

      Cervidae

I cook with regular salt, but I season with (and sometime eat a tiny bit of on my finger :P) Himalayan pink salt because it has minerals that are good for everyone but especially for women with PCOS, which I am. :) I like it!

  11. Out of the 220s and into the 210s! I now weigh less than I have lost. Also, my bmi is not high enough to qualify for surgery. Here's a new progress picture! Left is a new picture I found, and it was sobering. I believe it was my true heaviest. Right is the fourth of July when we went to see fireworks. 12. Hey all! Enjoying this misty, chilly Autumn day? I sure am! I just wanted to share the recipe for this super yummy, fast, easy, and healthy eggdrop soup I've been making a lot lately, as it seems like the perfect meal for us on a day like this. It's very simple! Put two cups of water on to boil, and while that's heating up, add some bouillon (I use 1 tbs of Better Than Bouillon beef or chicken. Both are delicious! Today was beef.), a dash of lemon juice, and whatever spices you love. My soup today has cumin, garlic powder, chili powder, paprika, and a little dash of curry. While the water continues to heat up, beat two eggs really well with a little bit of milk in a separate bowl. You'll want to get the eggs as uniform in consistency as possible. By this time, your water will be boiling. Turn off the heat, but leave the pot on the burner, and slowly pour your eggs/milk mixture into the boiling broth. And now you're done! Pour into a bowl, curl up with a cozy blanket, and enjoy. This soup only takes about 7 minutes to make, tastes delicious, and contains 12 grams of protein. I normally eat half of it and save the other half for later. Pretty wonderful! ^_^

I hope you like swimming and can give it a try.

  17. That super frustrating moment when you've lost over a hundred pounds but you are still quite plus size, and nothing fits but new clothes are super expensive because you are still in high sizes... and it's winter so you're freezing your new, smaller butt off. >.<

You've had a couple of good suggestions already. I'll add that, if you stick to the "classic"/basic/simple styles at stores like Penney, the lower quality isn't always so noticeable and the prices are not irritating.

    3. rejeannern

      rejeannern

do you have thrift stores nearby? I've found a few items that I was able to either alter or make do. If you sew or know someone who does, maybe they can take in the items to buy you some time. Plus no need to have a full wardrobe until you reach goal size. It would be great if there were a local clothing exchange as well, where someone losing weight would donate clothes and be able to take some without exchange of money.

    4. BLERDgirl

      BLERDgirl

I'm still plus size so I understand. I've been making due by altering a few things like skirt with elastic waist that I have just shortened the elastic on. I was a bit of a shoaholic so I have clothes in my closet all the way down to a 16 and I'm enjoying wearing them afain as many were designer things. I bought a few dress but just inexpensive Old Navy dresses for under $10 when they are onsale. Other than that I limit my new clothing purchases to gym clothes.

  18. 11 months post-RNY today. I did my usual weighing/measuring/etc, and though I only lost 6 pounds in the last month, I did lose a couple inches. Plodding along now... :P I've lost 168 since surgery and at least 223 pounds overall. I have not made the goal weight that I had for myself at the beginning of this year, and I'm still 219 pounds, but I now realize that I truly don't care. I'm healthy, happy, and I don't hate the way I look in the mirror. Everything that comes after this is just gravy. :)

  20. I'm almost certain I'm going into maintenance even though I still weigh 225 pounds. Is this normal? Is this my body's "set point"? Trying not to be discouraged, but I've been within the same three pounds for over a month. Could this just be a stall brought on by lack of exercise as I heal from knee surgery? Advice is appreciated! D:

Girl, you have lost SO much so fast and had knee surgery! I am sure your body is concentrating on healing your knee and then catching up on the loss. It will start up again - I'm sure of it! And 5 pounds a month would be reasonable after all you have lost , so don't be discouraged. I thought mine had stopped and then without real reason, I dropped 10 pounds in maybe 16 days that got me to goal and finished my weight loss. It was very odd and unexplainable. Our bodies are wondrous machines doing WAY more than we can imagine! And you have proven that you can do this. Hang in there!!

    3. her1981

      her1981

I think we got so used to the 10-15 pound losses that anything less than that feels like a stall.... I'm a little over a year out now and the losses have slowed waaaay down. I'm noticing how my body is not working hard to do simple things anymore so I'm just not burning as fast. Don't be discouraged though. The journey isn't over.

Knee surgery is THE most painful surgery--documented fact. Sometimes it takes several tries until the right pain cocktail is found. I had a L knee total replacement and a spinal surgery a year later. I would rather have a dozen spinal surgeries than one more knee surgery. My advice? Try to stay ahead of the pain. It is easier to manage if you don't wait until it's unbearable. If a particular pain med mix isn't working, ask for another. and keep asking until you get relief. No need to be "brave" or "stoic". Just get through it as pain free as possible. I'm putting you on the prayer chain that I belong to. Dozens of folks praying for you couldn't hurt, right? It does get better, and it is soooo wonderful not to have any knee pain. I had my surgery 5 years ago. It was so worth it.

I'm only three months post op from my RNY, and I need the exercise I simply can't get right now, and now won't be able to do for a long time. I feel like I could cry. :(

I don't know the name David Stamps, who Miss Mac wrote about, so his videos are good to know about. There are many, many other chair exercise videos available, incl. Chair Dancing (a series); Sit and Be Fit (also a TV show on many public TV stations. Your public library will have some for loan and can get others on interlibrary loan. You'll find quite a few at sparkpeople.com (check the exercise/video tab); join their Chair Exercise Team, which has a sticky thread of resources far more extensive than what 'm recalling at the moment and Miss Mac's suggestion. A friend who has run marathons, competed in triathlons (not Ironman), skis, etc., went to a chair class w/her elderly mother and reported that it was a valid workout for anyone. There's also a chair yoga video that should help with relaxation. Many Y's and private gyms offer chair classes. If I recall anything else, I'll let you know. You probably should run any chair exercise by your surgeon and PT in case some are not good for you at some time or other during your healing period. You'll be great.

As a "survivor" of ACL reconstruction - never think physical therapy isn't exercise/work! I lost weight during recovery. You burn a lot of calories "learning" to walk again, not to mention fighting pain. Good luck to you! You can do this!!

I had an complete ACL repair and let me tell you I was always working out in therapy! I loved it. The pain was real but honestly the more I worked out in therapy the better it felt ! Look at it as a way to get extra exercising in! you can use a recumbent bike!

Money (and lack thereof), my immobility as my knee heals, had a client back out of a job that would have given me nearly a grand right before school that I was really counting on, I'm late on rent, I have no idea if my tuition assistance is going to cover my huge school bill, etc. Mostly money and my inability to make it currently. I feel a lot less horrible and frantic after swimming for an hour, though, so it's a little better now.
