Have Hashimoto's and hypothyroidism is a side effect. Was sleeved 11/5 and down 37 lbs since starting pre-op diet (2 weeks prior to surgery) -- so far so good!

I love Sushi and I miss Sushi because with my band I cannot eat rice and I have tried MULTIPLE times to ask them to cut into thinner rolls, eliminate the seaweed etc and I still want to throw it up because it gets stuck- Has anyone had any issues with eating Sushi with the sleeve?

JenniferP1 reacted to ouroborous in Reactive Hypoglycemia?
So after a couple of unpleasant incidents, I've done some digging, and as far as I can tell I have been suffering from reactive hypoglycemia (RHG). All of the symptoms I get are hypoglycemic (flushed/chills, nervousness, trembling, slight mental confusion, feeling like I'm going to collapse, etc., all coupled with a sort of panicky hunger -- "I have to eat NOW or I'm going to fall over!"), and it's relieved by eating (but only if I'm careful and eat high-Protein foods, carbs just make the swings worse). I'm curious if anyone else has gone through this with the sleeve.
Incidentally, some call this or confuse this with "dumping syndrome" -- they're not the same, but they may be related. Eating in a way that leads to dumping apparently can dump a lot of blood-sugar spiking food into your small intestine at once, faster than your body can properly deal with. So part of the "eat every two hours" thing is to eat smaller meals and avoid dumping. The Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reactive_hypoglycemia) mentions this.
I am not diabetic, according to NUMEROUS tests by my PCP (given my weight and a family history, it seemed like a good precaution). Apparently, RHG is very common for WLS patients about 15-20 months out (I'm ~19 months out). It's made worse by not eating lots of small, high-protein meals, by not getting enough cardio, and by consuming too much caffeine. I'm guilty on all counts, but it seems like caffeine is really the worst offender for me. I don't do well with moderation, and I've discovered that when I really go overboard on caffeine, I get bad RHG, often at night. Also, it seems to be the combination of caffeine and carbs for me -- I don't drink caffeine at night, but my nighttime meals lately have been carb-heavy (spaghetti, for instance), mostly for convenience. And it seems like my RHG is happening mostly in the evening.
So, I'm curious who else has struggled with this, and how you dealt with it. Unfortunately, since I changed jobs in mid-June, I'm not yet eligible for health benefits so I can't go see a doctor about this. That will be changing soon (next week, I think), but I really don't think this is an emergency condition, especially since I seem to be able to manage it by eating healthier, avoiding caffeine, and so on. Mostly I'm looking for support and advice

My surgeon's plan allows real food very early on. I was having cottage cheese and yogurt on day 3. He's been doing it this way for years with no problems. Here is what the plan looks like:

I also did a YouTube video describing my first few weeks, since it is SO different from most of the plans I see. No clear or full liquid phase at all once I was discharged.

Not crazy at all...it is amazing tho! Enjoy it and keep up the compliance.
I had to do a 2 week pre-op diet of Protein shakes, sf pudding, light yogurt and Water.
Week one post-op was 3 Protein Shakes a day with all the Water I could do.
Week 2-4 was soft foods (including eggs, flaky fish and deli chicken/turkey. One Protein shake a day and fluids.
Week 5 was reintroducing regular foods slowly. No nuts til 3 months.
Mine was relatively easy compared to some but I did tolerate everything well and have had no issues. 4 months post op and down 61 pounds since surgery and 91 total from pre-op to now.

I see so much variation on here with different surgeon's post-op liquid/food phases, it's incredible actually. My surgeon is very conservative.
Phase 1 - Clear liquid diet (days 1-14)
Phase 2 - Protein drinks, creamed Soups (week 3-8)
    Phase 3 - Full liquid/Blenderized (week 9)
Phase 4- Soft to Regular Foods (week 10)
Foods to add after 11 weeks: Shrimp, scallops, lobster, salmon, halibut, soft cooked vegetables, cold cereals less than 3 grams of sugar, toasted bread
Foods to add after 12 weeks: Soft bananas, apples, melons, peaches (no skin on fresh fruit), plain lettuce, low fat dressing
Foods to add after 13 weeks: chicken or turkey without skin, chicken or turkey salad, ground turkey, chicken meat, fajita meat, soy products, refried Beans, Peanut Butter, Pasta, untoasted bread
Foods to avoid for 6 months after surgery: red meat, pork, raisins, grapes, nuts, seeds, popcorn, corn, alcohol
Next week I enter phase 2 and will be there for 5 weeks....sigh...going to have to google some good creamed Soups. Compliancy is not an option for me, this was a HUGE surgery and I get one shot at it. The good news is that in 2 weeks, I'm down 22 pounds. That's crazy, right?

JenniferP1 reacted to Bariatricbro in The Pitfalls of Snacking
I wrote a blogpost about my struggles with snacking and perception of what a snack is. I think that this happen(s) or happened to a lot of us. It's still something that I deal with on a daily basis. Wanting to sneak the leftovers in the middle of the night, etc. The post helped me get my emotions out there and really face the reality of what it means to really give up the abuse I was doing to myself.
