Completely agree with the advice from Babbs and OutsideMatch. One thing I will add is that if you are trying to calculate the calories you burn from exercise and give yourself permission to "eat back" those calories, stop. Most calculations of calories burned turn out to be wildly optimistic, and there is even some evidence that when people start exercising, they start gaining weight because they eat more. So, keep exercising, it is great for your health, but do not count on it to either help with weight loss or let you eat more. That is accomplished by being incredibly strict with what you eat and accounting for every calorie.
I have been in the process of losing what I gained over the holidays and at 3+ years out it is hard work. I am restricting my eating to unprocessed meat, eggs, green veggies, and small amounts of dairy. I would fail miserably on a liquid diet and I don't recommend it. Good luck!

Your body will proportion some of your body fat around to its liking as you lose weight. Hence, it's unusual to see someone with a very large face and neck but little abdominal fat. When women retain fat in their thighs and legs but not on their torso, it's actually a disease of fat distribution called lipedema, or possibly Cushing's syndrome.
Fat redistribution often happens during stalls on the scale. You may notice breasts, hips, abdominal fat deposits getting smaller as the fat is moved to other areas where it is needed.
None of this even touches the issue of white vs brown fat, surface fat deposits vs visceral fat deposits or the (mostly) myth of "spot training" areas with more fat than others.
Fat isn't static, and the fat inside each fat cell is constantly being circulated in and out.
The best advice is to be patient. Many of us spent years and years in an obese body, so giving our bodies some time to adjust to radical weight loss shouldn't be too much to ask.

I just read a thread over on the 'POST surgery' forum about POP. a newbie post related to drinking soda after surgery, a vet answered them and got herself torn sideways from the OP.
I feel bad because this person was QUITE obviously trying to only help, and give adequate information. For example, the OP carried on about their 'pouch' and stretching it.
The vet simply responded that a sleeve is not the same as a RNY pouch and that it really can't be stretched according to anatomical make up. Well, so much for trying to help! When I was a NOOB i was so happy to get good advice from the vets. in fact, that is how I learned the majority of the information that I needed pre-op. Obviously the other newbies couldn't give me advice based on experience, but the vets then were SO helpful (that includes many people on this forum).
So building off the other thread related to vets leaving, I look at this and totally understand why some vets have left....

Today marks my one year anniversary!
One year ago I made the decision to save my life. I believe I may have done that
It's been a quick and a much successful year - in my opinion HAHA
    Surgery date Sept 21 2015
    Starting weight 273.4
Current weight 157.0 (I was down to 153.6 a couple of weeks ago but must've been eating too much salt lately; hence the slight increase LOL)
Goal weight 150 - which I will succeed here shortly!
Thanks for all of your support on this website!
Now to get to goal and live happily ever after!!

Travel. Ask that your records be transferred and have the new doctor explain IN DETAIL what the heck happened to you. Pursue this medically and if warranted, legally. Accidents happen. Repairs are needed. It happens, it sucks, with that, you move on.
It sounds as if they were grossly negligent, not just by medical error but by downright giving you misinformation about what happened to you.
YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO KNOW. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT. If you are ever in an accident or need further surgery, your doctors may not have all the information to treat you properly because YOU don't know what happened to you. THAT'S WRONG.
    Travel. You are worth it.

ByeByeAdipose reacted to dashofsunshine in For those that are worried about excess skin...
Hi guys! I wanted to put some minds at ease about excess skin. It truly depends on your body type, age, exercise level, Water intake...and about 20 other variables. That being said, I think most of the after photos people see show huge excess amounts of skin, and thankfully, it isn't that way for EVERYONE.
I drink tons of Water, exercise a lot, and in general, have good skin. I also had rather good weight distribution - no one part of me was excessively larger than all the other parts (luckily!).
I had VSG almost 2 years ago - I'll be 22 months out on the 20th of this month. I'm 28 years old, my high weight was 330 lbs, surgery weight was 323 lbs, and current weight is 150 lbs - putting me at 173 lbs lost.
I know so many people decide WLS isn't for them, for fear of excess skin. Don't let that sway you - it might not be as bad as you think!!

I've been shopping like mad for the last week or so. We're going on vacation next week and then I'm back to work (middle school teacher) right after we return. I went through my closet and only 4-5 pieces of my wardrobe don't make me look like I'm swimming in my clothes.
I still want to gravitate to the plus size section, even though it's too big. It's hard to retrain your brain...hard but fun! I find myself gravitating towards bright colors and sleeveless tops--something I totally avoided before my surgery. I'm trying to buy versatile pieces that will hopefully see me through a few size changes because, let's face it, a new wardrobe is expensive!

At first, he didn't want me to. He was so nervous id get sad and depressed which sure, I did but it came and went. He actually has been staying away from sugars/ breads/fast food etc since my surgery day which has been a God send for my recovery and new lifestyle. He's determined to lose some pounds and have this lifestyle together. This was his big 30 so I did want to do something special. He has been very expressive and very grateful. It's nice when people see how hard this is for us especially in the beginning. He didn't get popcorn either! I was going to really struggle if he did. Haha!!! Over all, I woke up today and yeah, I didn't get steak but I'm doin okay! Lol.

Ok, so I was barely squeezing into a 30/32 in avenue women's clothing prior to surgery. So at about 10 months post-op, I went to lane bryant's during a sale and decided to buy a size 18/20 (I've always been hourglass/pear shape), thinking, these pants will probably last me through thanksgiving (I've experienced too big pants that look like you 're carrying a load of something really unpleasant around in the gluteal area), and those joints fit....I mean they fit like the fit will only last about a month of two; what a NSV for me! Another NSV is two other people sitting next to me on the NYC MTA subway (ok so they, not the fattest person, but two other people on a three sitter is an NSV for me!).

ByeByeAdipose reacted to Djmohr in What do you see in the mirror after losing a substantial amount of weight?
It clearly takes a long time for your head to get straight with the weight loss.
I am now nearly 2 years post op and down 152lbs. I weigh 158lbs and I am 5'10". I went from a size 26 on top, 24 on the bottom to a size 8 on the bottom and a size 10 on top.
When I look in the mirror on purpose, I still see a very fat me. When I catch a glance of myself in a mirror walking by, I sometimes don't recognize myself.
For me, pictures are the really telling story as is trying on clothing both my big clothes and new clothes. I have noticed that I take my picture more just so I can look at it and compare. There is some part of me that still cannot believe that this is real and that I lost nearly half of me.
This week I finally broke down and bought a fall jacket for myself. I used to buy a 26 coat and many times would have to have the arms altered because I carried a large amount of weight in my arms. I bought a size large north face jacket on line. It came in the mail and I put it on and it fit perfectly. I just had Brachioplasty so my arms now fit in EVERYTHING! Woo Hoo!
After I tried on that jacket, I went to the closet and grabbed my old fall jacket and put it on. I kid you not, I was literally drowning in it. It used to be very tight on me in the stomach and arms but I refused to go up another size back then. I walked out and showed my husband and he was shocked as was I.
It is the clothes, pictures and time that is helping me see the new thin healthy me. I am so happy I did this!
I am going out with friends tonight for dinner. It is the first time anyone will see me with my new arms! I am so excited to go but I still have not decided what I want to wear. I am still in compression garments so it will have to be something long sleeved but instead of them being pulled tight, I now have room!
WLS not only brought me my health but it helped me to see the small person under all that fat and now loose skin. I am so thankful every day for the doctors and nurses that make this happen for us!

I struggle with this a lot too. At my heaviest, I was 450 pounds (or maybe more, I never stepped on a scale back then...) and now I'm 217. I truly still feel like a 450 pound person. Seeing myself in a mirror, especially when I wasn't expecting it, is shocking and confusing. Seeing pictures of myself is also extremely weird, and I often ask my friends/family/boyfriend "is this accurate? Is this a good representation of what I actually look like? Do I look like a different person? Do I look anything like myself anymore?" Because I feel all of these things. It's so strange, but honestly, it's also incredibly wonderful. I never believed things would really change, even after I had the surgery and was dropping weight like crazy. I still don't really believe I'll ever get under 200, and when I get under 200, I won't really believe I can make it to 170 (my goal weight), and so on. We accept who we believe we are and it's hard to change that identity and self-image after many years of it being who you are. It's hard to adopt a new one so quickly, and to truly say goodbye to the person you used to be. 2 years ago, I was over 230 pounds heavier. It's going to take some time to see the new me for who I really am and what I really look like, and I'm still changing! But I keep trying every day and I will keep trying until hopefully someday I feel like "me" again. The new "me". Here's a progress picture! You can see how different I am from the person I used to be 2 years ago...

No no no please! When your comments are made on a public forum it is helpful to see another view on the public forum. Other people will evaluate both and come to their own opinions. You say she is biased for working for NHS well shoot. We are all biased! You are due to your complications which do seem to me to be rare considering all I have read and seen and I am biased by not having any complications - we're all biased and trying to sort things out for ourselves. .

Well....do you want someone else to receive the type of care you received from these doctors? Here's the other thing about compensation from a lawsuit: having to pay financial damages shines a light on issues that other prospective patients should be aware of, and hopefully the slap on the wrist financially would cause the provider and/or NHS to change some aspects of their pre, during, and post op procedures.
Do nothing, don't complain, don't boldly call them out on your horrible experience with these providers, and they will go on as if nothing happened. And other people will fall victim as you have.
My husband is British, too, has lived in the US for almost 50 years now....this is NOT the time for a stiff upper lip.

Oh! And just a thought point for you that I really didn't understand pre-op and you can't fully understand until you've done it. (Post op people hit me up with some LIKES if you agree!!!)

Feeling full after WLS (the sleeve anyways) is NOT good. I used to love feeling full. I craved it, I chased it, I got fat because of it.

Now feeling full makes me feel like sh*t for hours. It's physically uncomfortable, it makes me feel claustrophobic, I get sweaty, I get nervous, I want to hurl and sometimes I do. Full sits in my chest for hours instead of in that warm comfy spot where my tummy used to live. Seriously.

No regrets and not one complication. Lost all excess weight in 10 months, maintaining for five months. I would urge anyone contemplating WLS to thoroughly research surgeons, hospitals and their programs. My surgery was done by a very experienced surgeon at a Center of Excellence. There was a great deal of education and great follow up. A good surgeon makes all the difference imho.

There are good foods and bad foods after wls, just like before. And just like before, your diet should consist of 90% good foods.
The difference is, when you eat good or bad foods, you can't eat much. Yesterday I took my mother to lunch and we split a dinner salad. I ate half of my half and she ended up taking half home.
The key is having a disciplined maintenance program. I weigh myself just about every day and if I go over my goal weight, I go back on my low carb 1000/calories day diet.
10 months post opt, I've only gone over goal 3 times. All by less than 1 pound, and never for more than one day.
Yes, I can eat pizza, but seldom do.,,
