GADeltaDawn got a reaction from carter2wallace in Still Deciding - Can't lose pre-op weight
I am preop also and have pretty much adopted the post op diet already. I've lost 20# far. Here's what I'm doing: I've given up all sweets including sweet tea, no caffeine (I drink Decaf coffee), I get 80-100 grams of Protein a day through food and Protein Shakes (I love the Quest protein), I eat something or drink a shake (2 max per day) every 2 hours (I feel like all I do is eat), and drink at least 64 Oz Water a day. I focus on the protein first and stay away from white bread (actually almost no carbs). There were 2 days last week that I didn't get enough protein and barely had my Snacks and gained 1.5#. The next day I upped my protein to 120g, had all my snacks and lost the 1.5 plus 1 additional. I don't eat anything after dinner especially sweets. Ever since I gave up sugar I no longer have cravings. My guess would be that you need to up your protein intake and track your food in a diary. I'm sure there are other options that would better at controlling your sugar than eating cake right before bed. You definitely should speak to your dietician about that. Good luck to you! It's hard but will be so worth it to lose some before the surgery because we will heal faster and have fewer complications.

Surgery this morning. Everything went great! Pain was bad for first 2 or 3 hours but not much now. As long as tests come back good tomorrow I can go home tomorrow night! So glad I did this...no regrets at all!

I was originally going to do the sleeve until I found out that my reflux would likely become worse. I was also sold on the bypass because of how long it's been done and the success rates with it. It seems to be the gold standard.

I use Quest powders. The Syntrax Nectar have some fruit flavors that are more like juice that are good.

GADeltaDawn got a reaction from IcanMakeit in what surgery can I SAY i'm having?
I'm in HR and you don't have to tell anyone. You can request that your surgeon put "General Surgery" on your FMLA paperwork. I have only said I'm having surgery. If pushed for info I'm telling them it's personal but is for the betterment of my health.

I had the same problem with my insurance. It really upset me like it did you. It's my insurance & I pay for it so why can't I have some simple questions answered. They will only talk to the doctors office. I don't feel the information should be withheld from me. If they can provide it to my surgeon than they should be able to tell me or send it to me.

Yes. This same exact thing happened to me. I bet we have the same insurance company. They kept telling me my doctors office had to call for that info. I found out later that i was just getting the run around. Call back and ask for a supervisor if they refuse again. You have a right to know what it in your policy.

When I called my insurance they were really helpful-- she also helped me find the exact written requirements on their website as this is not listed in my benefit book- she also told me under my preventative coverage obesity appointments and nutrition visits are covered (unlimited) for patients with BMI over 30--- Mine is 47.5 so all good there!
I have my first appointment/consultation with the surgeon tomorrow morning!
Excited and nervous all at the same time!

GADeltaDawn reacted to SarahLovy in BCBS Anthem Insurance approval
It depends on the agreement between the hospital/doctor (or their negotiating entity) and the insurance company, and it varies a lot. The negotiated rate for my son's ear tubes was almost 90% of what was billed, but for my c-section it was only about 30% (different hospital system). There is a place on Anthem's website where you can look up the estimated cost of a procedure at a given hospital- some places aren't on there, but you can get a general idea. I personally am just assuming I have to pay my OOP max of the year (I have a $2000 deductible, then 80/20 coverage with an oop of $6k).

I have not heard anything about Premier Protein being a problem for bypass patients. In fact it was my surgical team that recommended it for me because I do not tolerate whey Protein isolate.
I see my nutritionist tomorrow afternoon and plan to ask that question.

It must be whey Protein isolate. There are numerous brands. I am ore- op but having been researching for months and came across the information on the change recently. Premier changed its formula in the Fall to a blend....it is useless for Bariatric patients. There are numerous brands out there. I have stocked up on samples from several different companies because I don't know what u will like post op. Unjury seems to be a popular one.

I know their was basically an insurance scam that was charging thousands of dollars to your insurance. I would contact your insurance company directly.
And I think Premier a Protein changed their ingredients making them no longer the right Protein for us anyway.

GADeltaDawn reacted to SugarFreeMe in Coworkers talking.. "she had something done"
Handle it straight away and head on, avoiding the questions will only lead to more speculation, more whispers and more talking. Try this:
"Thank you for noticing and asking. You're correct, I have done something, I took control of my life and health, something that isn't easy, but I'm determined. It's nice to know that my hard work is showing. I am however uncomfortable talking with anyone about it with the exception of those closest to me like my family. Thank you for your understanding."
Flash your biggest, brightest smile and walk away. If you're confident in your deliver, they won't have reason to question you again. If they continue talking about you behind your back, talk with a manager or HR. Don't let them undermine your hard work though.
