HappiTam got a reaction from Meldyer in How to get back on track -13 years after my bypass?
I'm still a pre-surgery gal, but the counselor and nutritionist have been stressing the food logs to me, so I'm logging everything thing through my "Fitbit"and it makes it so much easier than writing it down. The suggestion of "The 5-day pouch test" sounds logical (if it really does work), I'm bookmarking it "just in case" for later.

You can lose again, look what you did last time!

I was being lazy today and watching the marathon in bed (for a while).
Thank you Penny for motivating me to get out of bed today and do anything. I've now recorded this episode to play the next time I am unmotivated. Hopefully she will find something that will motivate her.

I live in La Crosse, WI but will be having surgery at mayo Clinic in Rochester in 2015, but a date has not yet been set. Currently, I'm a couple weeks away from finishing up the behavior modification counseling and trying to gather as much information as possible. I look forward to hearing about all of your accomplishments!

I also was having more pain in my upper right side (compared to everywhere else) and figured it was based on 2 things for me.
    1. The post-op drain I had started healing over yet was warm and red, but not much drainage. Once it reopened up, drained and an antibiotic started now feels much better.
    2. Gas/bloating. Took Gas-X that melts on the tongue. Pressure gone. :-)

The forty+ years have been much better than the 20's and 30's for me too! It is funny how the exact number doesn't seem to matter that much, I for one tend to forget my age, which could either be a good attitude or early dementia. My mom is the only one that is quick to quote the number and has even worked it in to my nephews math practice by telling him that however old he is always add 40 to the number and you'll have Auntie Tam's number. Unfortunately he's good at math. I did turn mom's math example against her when I explained that if he added 60 to his number, he would have grandma's number, and that is way bigger than mine!

Starting at one week post-op , I suddenly could not stand to smell my husbands hair gel, so he wore a baseball hat during he bad hair days without it. Now 6 weeks out nothing seems to bother me & the hubby can have good hair again.

If you are referring to post-op gas from what they pumped into your abdomen, it is free floating gas that for me always causes shoulder pain. The only way I could get relief was to walk as much as possible & walk some more.

Gas-X strips helped with the "musical" bowel gas.

HappiTam got a reaction from STARTING NEW in Day of Surgery Fear?
This is going to sound so stupid, but I was only concerned about any remaining bowel prep leaving my system before surgery started. I knew I was at a great hospital with an excellent surgeon with an awesome staff. So I figured that I would be just fine relaxing and enjoy being knocked out. :-)

HappiTam got a reaction from ilikecake2much in Nutrition/diet/dumping syndrome?
Before surgery I stocked up on a variety of Soups, sugar-free Jello, sugar-free pudding, sugar-free popsicles, natural applesauce, and a ton of Protein shakes. Now that I'm up to mechanical soft food I am adding lean deli meat, cheese and some fruit. The only food that I've had any problem with was scrambled eggs, but I think I ate too fast (and too much).
I admit I have tried a few bites of the potential dumping foods, but have been lucky.

Thank you for your help. My doctor told me, but I couldn't remember the location. So I went with the intra-muscular in the upper thigh. It wasn't anywhere near as bad as I had hyped myself out about (blushing).
Now I don't have to worry about it until May 1st!

Honestly, and this may sound harsh, but it made me very angry. Here I'm doing everything in my power to get approved and she just threw her chance away. It also made it clearer to me why we are all made to jump through so many hoops to get authorization for surgery. Had she been made to jump through those same hoops she would have never qualified in the first place. Her excuses of never being told she had to lose weight while in the hospital, the scales being off, and the myriad rest, were simply examples that she never had any intention of making life style changes. From day one she refused to even stand up!
The doctor did everything in his power to help her from keeping her in the hospital for months after the surgery, and sending a physical therapist and a nutritionist to her home after she repeatedly missed appointments. She was arrogant, narcissistic, unpleasant, and clearly put her own wants before those of her son. True, her husband was a bit of an enabler, but in the end she owned every bit of that failure. She should had never of been operated on in the first place.
It just really brought it home to me how much you have to not only want this, but be willing to fight for it. To be willing to change your entire lifestyle forever. I will use her example of everything I will NOT do once I have my own surgery.
Now if you want true inspiration you should check out Olivia's episode.

I'm still pre-op for WLS, but leakage has also been an issue for me and it seems to be more common than you'd think. Since I have not been able to loose enough weight to take the pressure off my bladder I've tried a couple procedures to help.
For stress incontinence (sneezing, coughing, or laughing) the first was a fine mesh to put pressure on my urethra to stop leakage...worked ok for a short time. Secondly, a collagen injection around the urethra on three sides was the winner. Now sneezing & laughing don't cause any worrying. For urge incontinence (you've got to go suddenly NOW feeling), Botox injections into the bladder walls keep the bladder from wanting to "let it go" until your ready.

I am looking to try to make more homemade pureed food rather than eating baby food. I really can't get past the smell of most baby foods. I got a Ninja Master Prep that purees food really well. I've experimented a few times with carrots and califlower.
Do you guys make your own pureed food? What recipes do you recommend for pureed food?

I had my surgery yesterday. Aside from the pain and nausea right after surgery I haven't been in too much pain. I was having some intense nausea ealier this morning but I got some medication for that. I've gotten up and walked the halls of the hospital 6 or 7 times today. More then they required and I've been using the restroom regularly so that's all great.
Getting all the fluids in is proving to be sort of difficult but I think it's just because I am still really drowsy. I can get the liquids down thought.
I'm nervous for the hour and a half car ride home tomorrow. Hopefully I can be pretty doped up on pain meds otherwise it is going to be the hardest part of the whole surgery.

Yes a pillow! I used mine while in the hospital. When getting out of bed I held on to it like it was going to save my life! It really saved me on the way home too. I attached a photo of the one I used. Perfect size!

Got notified that I have insurance approval today. Now to feel out work and see when would be a good time span to be gone. I am still not wanting to share with my coworkers what I am having done, just don't want their input and some will feel I am taking the easy way. We all know that this is just a tool not a "easy cure".
