These might not be true after surgery but they sure are now:
If my body is ever found dead on a jogging trail, just know
I was murdered elsewhere and dumped there.

Decided to introduce myself here instead of one of the generic pre-op boards. I am just beginning this journey towards weight loss surgery. I am unsure if I will have the surgery. Deep down I know that I need it. 1/2 my family is against it, and 1/2 are for it. Both camps want to talk me over to their side and right now I am caught in the middle.
I met with my doctor 2 weeks ago to discuss my “situation”.
My doctor recommended weight loss surgery.
I went to the seminar last week and it was very informative.
Today I got my blood results and I have high cholesterol and low "T".
2 years ago I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and given a CPAP machine.
    I am 5′7″ and I weigh 297 pounds.
I need to lose the equivalent of a baby giraffe
The proper BMI for someone my height (5′7″) is between 118 - 159 lbs.
I am sure that I have a screwed up body image, but I can not imagine myself @ 159 lbs. It seems alien to me. I certainly could not imagine 118 lbs. I think I would look like a prison camp survivor. (no offense to anyone). I think I would look extremely unhealthy. But, how is that different from how I look now. I look unhealthy now. I am trying to justify a different weight. 200 sounds good. 200 is a 97 pound loss. That makes sense to me. Unfortunately 200 lbs. is still considered obese for my height. I would not be morbidly obese, but I would still be obese. I have to get to 190 lbs. before I am only overweight.
This is a lot to wrap my head around.
Thanks for letting my vent and release as a way of introduction. I am not normally a "whiner".
When I am not pouring my guts out on weight loss boards, I am a Realtor in Jacksonville Florida, a Harley-Davidson motorcycle rider, and a lover of chicken wings and beer.

I was in the hospital for three nights. By the time I got home I was doing things on my own though I did have someone staying with me to help out. It was nice to have someone just in case. I was only on Tylenol. I wouldn't say you have to have someone but if she can stay with you just the first full day at home it would probably make you both feel more at ease.

I had a RNY gastric bypass about 26 months ago. I was in the hospital for 2 days and then returned home. While I was in the hospital, I was up and about every 2 hours walking. I needed someone to drive me home but once home I didn't need any help getting around. So in general, I think the answer is no.
But I did not use any pain medicine after I left the recovery room. If you are on pain medicine, it might affect your balance. Also some people in the hospital found it very difficult to get up and walk. So I guess it depends on the person and your particular medical conditions.

I totally understand every thing you are going through. I just finished up my 6 month so only having to do 3 is great. I also have lost a total of 37 pounds in 6 months but it is so not easy. I have never been a person who likes sweets but lately especially I have been craving them and letting myself stop and by something on my way to work. So I decided no more and now it;s been two days since I have. I hope I can keep it up. My paperwork has been submitted to insurance yesterday so we will see if they will approve me. Keeping my fingers crossed and hoping it dosen;t take much longer been doing this for a long while at least if feels like that. I am doing fitness pal and it has helped a lot. I also ride my bike 30 minutes 4x a week. So hang in there it will be time for surgery before you know it

I have Tricare Prime, however I used a MTF for my surgery so I am not sure what the requirements are for Tricare to authorize a civilian surgeon. However, you can go on the Tricare website and it should detail their requirements there. Best of luck to you.

My husband is in the military and we recently started the process of trying to get a gastric bypass for me. I have a BMI of 48 and also have PCOS. My question is what do they require? 6 months of nutrition counseling? I meet with the surgeon for the first time on Friday. Tricare sent me a few things in the mail saying that they will cover the visits to the surgeon and psychologist. i'm just curious on how long this all will take and what I should expect. Any info you have would be appreciated!

I have Tricare Prime as well. They just reduced the medically supervised weight loss program requirement from 6 months to 3 months. That is as far as I have gotten so far. Good luck.

I guess I better get to writing then. I was told I will be doing 4 weeks of liquid diet just prior to surgery yummy. I am just beginning my journey. I started my 90 day medically supervised weight loss program 10 October and probably won't have my surgery until the end of February.
Thanks for sharing your story Joe and good luck as you continue your journey!

I'm working through my slew of appointments, so all I have is this sheet that details what to begin working on. When I saw "cut out coffee" I almost cried. My mom just brought me a Keuirg about a month ago and I can't tell you how much I love this little machine. I kind of stroke it and purr over it each morning as it makes my first cup. I cannot stress enough that coffee saves lives every day in my family.
So now, after 2 weeks, I'm down from 3 or 4 cups a day to 1/2 a cup. 1/2 a cup! I see the nutritionist next week for my first appointment and I want a gold medal when I go in and can report that I'm off coffee completely.

Hello and thanks bluedreams86. I didn't see that hospital on the list of Center of Excellence list I got so I will have to check them out. I am planning to have an initial consultation with Dr Maozzez this Friday at Inova but I have not decided if I will stick with that group yet. The seminar answered some questions my wife and I had so that helped.
Good luck with your insurance and let us know what happens.

My surgery is scheduled for Oct 28th at Fair Oaks. I know 4 others who also had surgery there and of course everyone at my doctor's support group. It is Center of Excellence.
But there are several others in the area, including GWU, Georgetown U and Faifax H. to name a few. At GWU it will take a little longer to get scheduled as they are very busy. About 3 months once you complete all your paperwork for insurance
(nutritionist visits for insurance) and and you have to see their nutritionist. At Fair Oaks depending on the doctor it may be as early as one month if your schedule is flexible.
