lovedXJesus got a reaction from Kimberly Bouche-Perez in eating TOO much?
I am almost 5 weeks post op. I have the same exact issue. I agree with JoeBravo. Just because you can, does not mean that you should. I decided one day a couple of weeks in, to check my calories for the day....not just the amount I was eating. It was a whopping 1,100 calories!!!!! Holy cow! I realized then that this was going to be an issue. I have tracked my calories since then and while I still eat more calories than most people at 5 weeks, I am losing. I also measure everything. So that way I do not overeat for my pouch. Also. Protein is very important. You need to find a shake that you can tolerate and drink at least one a day. Your health will suffer as well as your weight loss efforts. Best wishes.

lovedXJesus got a reaction from holdan29 in OK. So I can seriously eat anything..............HELP!
I am feeling pretty disappointed. Since having my gastric bypass eight weeks ago, I have lost 27.5 pounds. I am plenty happy with that. It's just that nothing, and I mean nothing, bothers my stomach. I can eat anything I want with absolutely no repercussions whatsoever. I actually chose the bypass because of the side affects it usually brings. I am worried that it will have a bearing on my future weight loss. Is there anyone else out there who is in the same predicament? How did you do long term? I am currently eating 900-1000 calories a day. I know that is a lot of calories for most people, but I am losing around 2 pounds a week, which is what my goal is. Does anyone have experience with this?

How do you keep things under control? Thanks again. I really appreciate your responses.

    Hi Drmeow,
I am in Frederick. I decided to travel to Baltimore for my surgery. I didn't like the fact that all the doctors at Meritus had their practices in Pennsylvania. I checked some in Frederick, but was only able to find one doctor that did the surgery. I have not had surgery yet, but am scheduled for January 20th with Dr. Schweitzer.

I used to smoke too. I smoked for 25 years :/ Every time I would go to the doctor for anything they would blame it on smoking. "Your back hurts? It's because you smoke. You have a cold? It's because you smoke. You have an ingrown toenail? You smoke."!!!!!!! Every single time. Then I quit smoking cold turkey. I gained 60 pounds. Now when I go to the doctor it's "Your back hurts? You're overweight!" LOL Seriously. That is exactly how it is. But am I glad I quit smoking. Even with all the weight gain. I feel so much better. And I really loved to smoke. I prayed about it while I was quitting. I asked Jesus to help me not to indulge in something so unhealthy for me. I should have prayed not to replace cigarettes with twinkies..............SMH

I have not had the surgery yet but I have told some people. I figure people will ask when they notice I am losing and I have decided to tell them I am only eating 700 calories a day. Then if I need to I will clarify and tell them that I can only fit that much in because of weight loss surgery. ..........or at least that is my plan!!! lol I am trying not to be too secretive because it feels much better for me to be out in the open.

I have been officially labelled by my surgeon as an "RNY outlier". I NEVER had that post-surgery dream phase of magic weight loss when I lost 20lbs in 2 weeks. Technically I am an RNY failure on the books because of it. I ate like a post-surgery RNY patient after my surgery, but it didn't produce any significant weight loss like it should have, and it baffled the doctors. After two years of investigation, the only conclusion they've been able come to is "well that's just weird, and maybe it was the drugs for all the other stuff".
While the whole lack of massive weight loss sucks for me, I've become fairly good at maintenance for somebody not that far out of surgery. It takes practice and a Yoda-like concentration to what you are eating. Not necessarily relentless calorie counting, but an awareness that you can't have pancakes for Breakfast, stop by Starbucks on your way to work and grab that latte, graze the corporate leftovers after lunch, plunder your desk to satisfy the cravings in the afternoon, eat with the family and then graze while watching TV before the bedtime snack. You can have eggs for Breakfast, all the tea you want, whatever it is you packed for lunch and for your afternoon snack, dinner, and an evening Protein IF you're hungry.
Eat your Protein rather than drink it as it will keep you full. The TV is evil as there are far too many food commercials on there that drive people to eat. I personally can't have a TV. If you can watch the TV without going to the fridge, you are a better person than I. Get a fitbit or something to help keep track of some aspects of your life. Don't try to track everything as all you'll spend all day tracking your life instead of living it. Get a new hobby that is either a time hog or really doesn't mix well with food, such as stained glass, photography, knitting, hiking, yoga, meditation, music, auto repair... A lot of the local school districts have night time fun courses that start in January. Definitely sigh and just accept graciously when your mother congratulates your weight loss by giving you a bag of mint Oreos for Christmas because people like that will always be there to sabotage you and you just have to accept that these people exist and they are toxic and you should avoid them as much as possible. Also acknowledge that good chocolate cake is a gift from the gods and should be consumed in moderation. Stay the hell away from store bought drinks. I don't know how they post the nutritional information on them in the US, but the sugar content in them is insane, and Coke is usually the least of the offenders. Nobody is perfect, very least of all me. If there were a place called perfection, I would be down the hall, to the left. I did manage not to beat my mother with the Oreos though, so go me.

lovedXJesus got a reaction from Twirpo75 in 4months post op at a standstill super confused. Feeling like a failure
    hi nurserosemary,
I have not had my surgery yet, but I have been reading the posts here for months and from what I have read, what you are experiencing is not unusual. I think that it is common to stall and that with the exercising that you have been doing, your body just might be wondering what the heck is going on and is holding out til it feels more secure. If your doctor is not able to relate well with you maybe you could find a nutritionist or a dietician that could guide you better on what is good for you nutritionally. It is really very important that you are eating a correct amount of Protein, as well as taking in the correct Vitamins. It is what will help you to stay healthy for the years to come. I am sorry your doctor has such a lousy "bedside manner". It only makes things that much more difficult for you. But hang in there. Take charge of what is going on if your doctor will not. God bless.

Yesterday afternoon, I scheduled my surgery for January 6. It's been more than a year leading up to this, and all of a sudden things are getting very real.
    My concerns:
    1) Recovery time. The magic google machine says I should expect to go back to work in 2-3 weeks. My surgeon's office says 6-8 weeks. That's a big difference. I am probably starting a new job (at my same company) on January 1 and I hate to leave them for 2 months immediately after accepting the position, but I really want to focus on new habits and getting healthy and I only have one shot to get it right the first time, so I'm worried. You can tell when I'm worried because my sentences run on and on and on.
    2) What if I fail? Since I've failed at every other attempt to lose weight over the past 30+ years, why should this be any different? My need to be fat seems to be very persistent across time and space and circumstance. What if I can't beat it?
    3) Who do I tell? I tend to be an open book - sometimes a bit too open - so it would be consistent with my personality to tell everyone everywhere what I'm doing. But I feel very fragile about this topic and am trying to be a bit more reserved in general so maybe I should just keep this to myself until I can't anymore.
    4) I blame my weight for a lot of things, from petty disappointments to major issues, but what if my live is not magically better when I'm smaller and I have to deal with my actual limitations and not just knee-jerk blame my size? That'll be a good thing in the end, but could make for some rough adjustments.
    My excitement is:
    1) My health is going to improve! I have no critical issues, but lots of things that could go bad quickly, and this should address all of them.
    2) I'm going to be able to travel and be active and move my body the way I want to. I can't wait to have a body that obeys my wishes.
That's enough for me for now. Geez, ramble much?

If, as a veteran bypasser, you could give your top five bits of advice on how to be successful, what would they be? I have not had the surgery yet. I am looking forward to having it done in the near future. But I really want to be successful. I was wondering what others that have already done it, would say are the top five things that they did that helped them lose the weight and keep it off.

    Ooooo, pick me, pick me!
    1. DON'T CHEAT. Yes, your stomach is smaller, yes, you're not absorbing the calories as well, but eating garbage and/or too often just might be what was the problem in the first place-and it still will be.
    2. I am not you. You are not me. It's really hard, but try not to compare yourself and your progress with others on this site. Everyone's journey with WLS is different.
    3. Move it, Move it! Even if you're tired, even if you're not in the mood, even if the weather stinks. Getting up and moving around (even just slow paced walking) will help you digest, trim inches & get that heart rate up. What? It's raining? Time for laps around the kitchen!
    4. Patience is a virtue. We didn't get to the size we are in 2 weeks... we're not going to lose it all in 2 weeks. You'll stall out. You might be hungry. You might hurt. Who knows? Keep your eyes on the prize and the great decision you made for a healthier life. 2-3 weeks on mushy food might be maddening (not to mention the 50 bazillion Protein shakes you'll experiment with), but it's all temporary. You'll get back to regular food soon enough.
    5. There are no stupid Questions. This is a huge procedure- there's no way you could ask too many questions about it, and this is a great place to do it!

I am not sure about the sleeve, but I am having bypass surgery and they scheduled my surgery for 6-7 weeks after the insurance company approved me. It was disappointing to say the least. But I trust that things will work out like they are supposed to. I am sure it will work out for you also.
