What's with all the "diet" food?
Blerdgirl- id did not mention you or your name, but there are people on these forums and posts that tell people specifically to ignore what they have been told by their nutritionists and doctors and it is dangerous and negligent. People assume that what works for them is the be all end all of what MUST be best for all. When it is absolutely not true. I actually discussed this very thread with my nutritionist about 4 hours ago, and her answer was perfect in my opinion. She said if someone came to me in her position and said they wanted to use organic, whole and natural foods, "I would work with them to come up with a plan they and I are happy with to maximize their weight loss and maximize their food goals." That's the kind of answer that should have ben given to this person who started this thread. as in. Ask your team to help you meet your needs with the food choices you are trying to make. Why is that so hard for anyone to do. Yes some people have had nutritionists they don't like, don't agree with etc. But that doesn't mean anyone has the right to hijack someone else's journey. Think of it like this, I am sure you have seen or met people telling you horror stories about WLS, we didn't listen to the and went on our own path, well let people do that as well. You want to share information, SURE! its great, but remember that it is information for you. Many have reminded me that it is necessary to write that advice you have is based on what works for you, it is your opinion only! I've often been told on here that I act like a know it all, well here's a truth people don't like to believe. Having bariatric surgery does not make a person an expert in nutrition, bariatric surgery or anything related to it.

How upfront was your surgeon about a goal weight?
my surgeon asked me what i wanted and then said my goal should be about 20 pounds lower. lol Bit my goal weight on my ticker etc is the one he gave me. my goal weight is what i assume my bounce/maintenance weight will be. but we shall see id love to beat them both.

Does it get better?
i too was in december, dec 16th to be exact and yes its a big pain in the butt, but so far its already worth it. This is a tough thing. I osted something earlier that is actually sticking with me, and I like it, and this is : Weight Loss Surgery May be a one time thing, but this lifestyle change is a lifetime thing. It will get better. weight loss and being healthy is something we can all do. I know you can do it. youve come this far.

Getting super anxious about food after w4 postop
you're going to be using shakes for a long time, so try your best to get used to them. Here's just my opinion, every ready made shake so far I've tried was intolerable by me. Just my opinion. although premier vanilla, was ok'ish it tasted like cake frosting to me, but thats tolerable. if you like, I do video taste tests of many different flavors and products on my blog, at http://cuttingthefatwithaknife.blogspot.com I also recommend trying the small individual packs to see what you like. But you will need Protein shakes of some kind if you want to meet your protein goals. food isn't easy after surgery and some, more so than others. I personally, have come to depend on them for those times when I'm working and just can't take time to cook something. (not that I can cook at work mind you LOL)

What's with all the "diet" food?
im going to play devils advocate here and say simply "listen to your doctor and weight loss team" no one here has a medical degree that I know of. so do not vary your prescribed diet because someone else said so. Here's a little fact, a lot of people here on BP ate no chemical , all natural stuff and they were still morbidly obese. So take that to heart. I can guarantee you no one here got obese eating organic broccoli. no one should tell you to ignore your weight loss team, and listen to them, PLEASE PEOPLE STOP IT. Unless you are willing to take the consequences if they fail, stop telling them to ignore their team. you are not them. to say what you do is fine, to blatantly say, oh your person is stupid or any such is ridiculously negligent to the extreme. Every person has a separate journey, let them have theirs, you are on yours because you are not perfect either, stick to your journey, it should be hard enough for you to make your journey without trying to control someone else's. I am sorry if anyone feels offended by this, but its the blind honest truth.

When will I actually see a change?
i had my sleeve a day after you, but you cant take anyone elses weight loss and compare it. my changes have been drastic , i went from 5x shirts and 4x sweatpants to 3x shirts and 2x sweatpants and they are both loose. im taking my first set of post surgery measurements tomorrow, ill let you know the real differences then.

Low Vitamin D level
actually i use the adult Centrum chewables which 2 chewables, is 200% for all including Iron. which is what my nutritionist wants patients to take. So some centrum products do meet requirements easily. I looked up the requirements online and Centrum meets or exceeds them in every aspect. 100% of Thiamin Riboflavin Niacin B6 Panthothenic acid 11%calcium ( i take calcium chews daily) with Vitamin k Iron Phosphorus 5% Iodine Zinc Copper 50%manganese 17%chromium Molybdenum 27% and low vitamin d is very common in the northeast due to lack of sunlight exposure year round.

3 weeks post op only lost 15 lbs ????
well said babs, well said. im there as well i was upset , i am 35 days post surgery and I was a bit upset that im only down 37 pounds. then i realized thats over a pound a day!, so now im switching from daily scale reading to weekly scale reading. no reason for us to beat ourselves up anymore than we already have.

I actually asked myself.. is this really worth it?
the truth is, people who arent going through or havent gone through this just don't understand that while the surgery may be once ( or more depending) this lifestyle change isn't a one time event, it;s a lifetime event. While I don't relish the struggle, and i know ill have some pitfalls , none of us is perfect, ill accept that, but we have to do what we can when we can. And i have the utmost faith in you cowgirljane. and hopefully in myself. I can see how this can just throw anyone for a loop, it took me 4 years of constant soul searching to decide if i had the (excuse my words) testicular fortitude to carry this through . I do have those thoughts like, "Well, when I can I'll just have ONE sandwich and SOME french fries. Or ill just have a side salad with my turkey club. But the realization that even that is something that is seemingly out of my reach forever, is...depressing and always threatens to overtake me, but i lean on people. Here and my wife , friends, and coworkers etc.

Weight loss surgery on Public Radio this morning
"The struggle is real and until the surgeries start taking place in our heads many will always struggle....I'm afraid. " I love that.....Surgeries in our heads, it is a very apt thing to say.

Weight loss surgery on Public Radio this morning
yeah just don't read the comments more than half of them are ignorant and inflammatory, and I know inflammatory! But this lady obviously never had the psych counseling that I can see now as a requirement. If I approached this as a cure and as soon as I could ran to McDonalds Heck of course id gain the weight back.

Genepro Users-check this out.
Hello, SO for everyone who uses GENEPRO Protein powder. I have been trying to get the people at Musclegen ( the company that makes it. To help me understand their claim that 1 tablespoon of their product contains 30 grams of protein when the tablespoon itself only holds 15 grams of product. Finally after posting numerous times on their website and Facebook I emailed them directly to see if they wished to send me some product to try, under my video taste tests that I do on my blog. Well they declined and also explained about the product and its claims. This one blew my mind. They do not have 30 grams of protein in one tablespoon of product. The say that their product is absorbed 3 times better than regular whey isolates so therefore the 10 grams of protein in their tablespoon is equal to the absorbed amount when you drink 30 grams with a non genepro product. Well! they do not do this knowing that sleeve patients ( I don't know about band or DS) due to the smaller surface area of the stomach absorb more per area than a normal person does. So if you are really trying to get the amount of protein you need, then you need to triple up on this stuff. I personally do not like this marketing ply of the 30 grams in one tablespoon thing. But I have no control over that.
-
Non flavored protein powder
Jaimelogical is right, it isn't actually 30g of Protein because a tablespoon is itself only 15 grams and it doesn't take a mathematician to see you cannot get 30 grams from 15 grams. without imploding the universe that is. lol I have a request in to them for a response and for taste test samples.

Lost thread
i noticed there are a lot of lawsuits, now showing up on youtube as well, if anyone mentions tourism etc or any hospitals doctors and isnt happy they get hit with a cease and desist order immediately. they are fighting to suppress any bad press at all. or anything even relating to bad press. bit touchy.

Approved.....but a huge delay. UGH
i was in somewhat of the same boat my approval was completed on dec 12th and because i had explained the probability of my insurance changing etc my surgery was 4 days later.

Struggling w/ post diet
it is very normal to feel the way you do right now. trust me. I do question the egg in the pureed stage though but every plan is different. i wasnt allowed egg until stage 4 which I am in now. and no meat even deviled ham or tuna fish was allowed, but again thats my plan so yours could be different. for two weeks post op i was on liquids and purees, soup broth, helped, but mainly Protein shakes, and they worked for me. the thing is, dont try to think of how eating was, you have to look forward to what will be. keep your eyes looking forward and get through each day until you see the weight falling off, then you will remember why you did this. Trust everyone here when they tell you, it will get better. You CAN do this!

Whey Protein powder isolate
the isolate is a refined whey Protein, its is filtered down to be a very condensed version of the protein. the isopure unflavored is ok just be careful if you put it in hot liquids it turns to cement.

Pre-op Questions I'm Pondering (I Need YOUR Input)
heres my two cents, if you asked me about two weeks after surgery id have said no, im 5 weeks out now and though it is hard the results are amazing, and not just the weight. through this process i have seen my other health issues just go away. i had poor circulation ( venous insufficiency) in my legs but that is all but gone now, my asthma is a million times better, my sleep apnea has become almost an afterthought, my back pain is much much less than before. my knee pain is so lessened that i ride 7 to 10 miles on a stationary bike now. i had owned three canes, they have been retired. as hard as it was or well is. you cannot deny results. my biggest surprise is a tie between how little i can actually eat, and these few weeks how fast you lose and how much, i know its still the honeymoon but man those days of 2+ pound loss are so much fun. That and seeing the dramatic changes in my body already.

Gym
just please please make sure your doctor/surgeon etc. has approved you for whatever option you choose. While everyone here means well, dont increase your calories or start lifting heavy weights or performing any exercise unless you are cleared, I know no one here wants anyone to get hurt or risk injury. Using all your resources is always smart. Good luck and you Can do it!

Advice from the experts please? :-)
ill only say this, the difference between the VSG and the DS is negligible. The routines you have to adhere to are almost the same as well. But I am curious why you think you can only lose 60 pounds on a VSG? the weight loss doesnt stop at a certain point. there are many sleevers who weighed more than you and lost a lot more than what you want to lose. Heck there are those who weighed less and lost more. The key is with either surgery YOU have to make the lifestyle change the surgery only helps you make those changes , sure at first its because you have to, but you are supposed to learn as you lose to change your eating habits and lifestyle, and go to the gym and eat healthy. Personally i chose the sleeve due to the lower complications, easier surgery and recovery, and the much lower risk of dumping syndrome and malabsorption problems. But whatever helps you is great I am slated to lose over 170 pounds from the sleeve. Either way you choose, you may want to do more research on the after routines and what YOU have to do for yourself after either surgery before you commit. Good luck wih your decision and with your weight loss. Either way, you can do it!

Cooking for one
So many great suggestions! Way to go people. Ill say i happened to mention one day to a local place where they have people who actually butcher meat. About my sleeve and now if i ask they will cut up anything for me and package it in small portions. My favorite since i have a decent time digesting chicken ( which is weird for some i know) but they cut it up in small stir fry size pieces and i make packages of 3 ounces worth and freeze most put one or two in the fridge. then i can just pop em in a pan with a small bit of veg(soon) and maybe a touch of spice or herbs and bingo instant hot meal in like 4 minutes, no waste. also i bought one of those real small nonstick frying pans, its cooks for me wonderfully and i don't have to worry about portion sizes because it won't even fit in the pan lol.
