  1. I am 5 months post RNY and since starting the journey I've lost 84 pounds and it feels great. I've slowly been backsliding on journaling and not eating as I should. Result, weight loss has stopped, but I haven't gained - but feel it is only a matter of time. At the moment my stress level is sky high - was diagnosed with breast cancer last week and am scheduled for a mastectomy on 3/31. Back in the day, food was my go-to stress reliever, comfort giver. I don't want to undo the good that I've accomplished, but I'm having trouble getting back on track. Any words of wisdom?
  2. I've seen my regular MD a couple of time since the RNY on 10/14/14. Each time my temperature has registered between 93 and 95. Anyone else experiencing this? Is it a side effect of the surgery?

    Plugged ears?

Wow! This was so helpful. I'm 5 days post op. I asked my anesthesiologist about it and all he could say was that during surgery all tissues swell and it would go away. Didn't really make sense to me since if that were the case, I'd think it would be resolving by now. Riding in the car is an experience - it's as if as pressure changes my inner ear pain fluctuates. My voice has also changed to scratchier and lower. My first post-op visit is next Friday and I'll check with the surgeon then. Let you know if I learn anything new.

    Pre-op diet issues

** Are you in Washington state? I have same diet starting tomorrow. Surgery date is Oct 22 at Overlake.** I live in Mountlake Terrace WA and am having my gastric bypass 10-14 at Overlake Hospital with Dr Jeffrey Landers. Would you like to buddy-up for this journey?
  5. The week before my pre-op diet began, my husband and I went on a farewell tour of our favorite restaurants. Didn't gorge or anything, but it gave me a chance to review their menu and decide what I could have when I'm back to solid food. Calling it a farewell tour made me feel like a rock star and not sad at all.
  6. I am on day 8 of my 14 day of my pre-op which is 3 Protein shakes a day plus a lean cuisine and a cup of veggies for dinner, Two issues have cropped up and I would like to know if they are common. For the past two nights I've not been able to sleep, or if I finally doze off, I have horrendous nightmares. This even though I take Trazadone f or sleep. To complicate this, I'm also having severe restless leg syndrome - something I rarely have. I know this too shall pass, but just curious about your experience.

    Time off work?

I'm hoping no more than two weeks. I work part time as a cat caretaker at a cat hotel. Involves moderate activity and standing. Usually 3-4 hour shifts.
  8. I started my journey toward gastric bypass about a year ago. Started at 260#, diabetic, hypertensive, inactive. I am now five weeks out from surgery and am wondering if I should go ahead with it. I have lost 40 pounds on my own in four months, with another 70 to lose. My concern is that I am 68 years old and wondering if the surgical risk at that age is out weighed by the weight loss benefits. I'm thinking of putting the surgery off for six months to see what else I can accomplish with the new tools I've learned in the last four months. I have my pre-op appointmentt next week and plan to talk it out with my surgeon, but want some input from the pros - you guys. Thanks.

    psych evaluation!?

I had a similar experience. Went to my psych eval thinking everything was fine and was referred to a therapist anyway, who in turn referred me to a Depression Support Group. What an eye opener that was! It was an 8 week class that focused on cognitive behavioral change to alleviate depression or anxiety. It gave me some valuable skill to deal with the major life changes that will come from have the surgery. What a blessing. My pre-op appointment is in 3 days and I'm much better prepared than I would have been. Good luck to you.
