Failure because you ate a piece of cake?!?!?!?!? C'mon now, you can't really be serious.....you're going to call and cancel your surgery because you ate a piece of cake?
I'm almost 5 years post op....I eat cake! NORMAL people eat cake.
The whole preop, tests, appointments, etc, etc ARE stressful. I don't know you or your age, but if you're like me, we've been turning to stress relievers (such as that piece of cake) for many years. And it took us to a place in our life we didn't/don't like.... Therefore, we made the decision to change it. But that change doesn't happen overnight. There will be slipups....we're human. I've had many along the last 5 years...but I'm in such a much better place today because of my WLS.
It's certainly your decision, but please don't think one piece of cake is reason to throw everything you've worked for away.....Best wishes!
ETA...almost 5 years. I ate ICE CREAM after the pic on the right...

I'm sorry that you are struggling. It sounds like you need to look at additional help for coping with stress. The craving for cake and the relief thereafter sounds like a serotonin deficiency. Don't give up. Seek additional tools and then try again!

ALL of us have different experiences with this. So rather than telling you that it's a magical thing that works wonders, I'm going to tell you what it DOES do for me. I'm only a few days post-op, but I am already seeing positive changes.
    1) I'm learning the difference between being satisfied and over full. The difference is ... being satisfied means that I'm not HUNGRY, but my brain says "You can handle maybe one more sip." 99% of the time, if I take that one more sip, then 3 minutes later my stomach is screaming "You IDIOT! WHY did you do that? Now we want to PUKE!"
    2) I'm thinking more about the things I'm putting in my body and making better choices. Sure, I could drink Koolaide, eat Jello, and nibble on thinned out mashed potatoes because I WANT them. However, deciding to drink Propel (same flavor as Koolaide but has Vitamins added), eating the prescribed Protein rich pudding, and sipping on cream of chicken Soup so that I get the right nutrients is a MUCH better choice.
    3) I remind myself that I didn't go through the hassle, expense and PAIN of surgery just to screw it up over making the same bad decisions. The lap band is a tool that I wanted and needed .... so I'd better make use of it.
    4) I have to remind myself that it IS a tool. Nothing more. It's like ... a jump rope, walking shoes, or weights. When used properly, it works. When ignored .... well .. nothing works when you ignore it.
    5) No one said that this was going to be easy. HOLY COW! The Pre-op diet is enough to remind you of that. But I'm less than a week post-op, and I'm reminded of how easy it's NOT with every twist, turn, sip, and (oh dear God help me) burp. This is a LIFESTYLE change. Either you are in it for the long haul, or you are looking for a quick and easy fix. If you want the quick and easy, this is NOT it.
So yeah ... this is what I remind myself of every time I want to complain about any part of it. Also .. I'm doing this for ME. For my health. To feel comfortable in my own skin. Am I worth all that I'm dealing with and the choices I have to make? Hell yeah, I am.

    Good luck!

I don't have to diet. It does help me feel satisfied with less food and less hungry.
No WLS restricts eating. Some may restrict how much you can eat but there are ways to eat around any WLS.
No WLS can stop the eating demons in your mind. If you insist on eating M&Ms, ice cream, chips/dips you can do so with any WLS.
There is no perfect pill to make us eat less, eat right and think right.

I live in Louisiana. This facility is Pennington Biomedical Research Facility. It is part of LSU in Baton Rouge. The name of this particular study is Heads Up. My husband's medical insurance is BCBS, through the state's Office of Group Benefits ( OGB). OGB teamed up with Pennington to conduct a five year study. I submitted my application ( along with over 20,000 other people) in January 2012. A computer generated lottery selected 100 names in 2012. 100 additional names were selected randomly in 2013. I was lucky enough to be one of those names. The research facility performed all of my presurgery tests, evaluation, and physicals. Once my surgery was approved, I met with one of the surgeons Participating in the program. My surgery was 100% free, and all aftercare fills are also free. I must return to the facility at six months, one year, and every year for the next five years. At each one of these visits, a complete medical and physical evaluation will be done on me. As a side note, my surgeon's office in New Orleans, is also conducting a free trial right now on patients who would like to have the POSE Surgery done for free. I believe it will be much easier for person to get in that program. Google WHY WEIGHT, and click on surgery options. They are looking for candidates to participate in their newest surgery option, which is done endoscopically. Hope this might help your friend.

Wow, is all I can say to start this post. I don't know how to convey what's running through my head. When i started my journey in early 2013 I couldn't continue due to insurance purposes. It felt like all was lost :-( but!!!! In late 2013 hubby's work switched insurances and wls is covered. I believe my whole world changed at that point. Going through the struggle of being over weight and depressed has taken a toll but on July 29th I am going to have my surgery. I can't wait!!!! It's been a long journey to get to this point but I'm happy where I'm at today. I want to say thank you to everyone on here for all the support. And those of you that have similar situations to Mine I wanna say hang in there!!!!!

lovelytrl reacted to NaNa in Going on 9 years- Sometimes I get SICK of Restriction! But....
It's like a love/hate relationship I have with my band -- UGH! Damn if I do (with restriction) and Damn if I don't (a looser band).
I will tell you, after having a restrictive band year in and year out...sometimes it get OLD...at least for me.
With my old band, I had kiss a@@ restriction and lived with that for years, until I had saline removed and I honestly (welcomed it) because I was sick and tired of getting food stuck, slimming, etc. chewing, etc.
When my surgeon removed some saline back in 2012 due to a hiatal hernia and back pain when it was filled optimally-- I felt FREE.. a release from (lap band jail)...LOL....
I felt so free, I went wild....I ate a Five Guys burger, with melted cheese and fries without getting that ( Deer in the Headlights) Look...you know what I am talking about .
Then I had a delicious philly cheese steak sandwich with toasted bun, onions the whole nine yards....I was on a roll....
I continued my FREEDOM...Until my pants started to get tight...and then I had to go shopping again for a new size....
At this time, my band was still pretty empty, I could not fill it properly because I had back and chest pains from my hernia, so I continued on a downward spiral of FREEDOM....forget about ice cream and candy...you know the sliders we sneak and eat with a very tight band....I wanted REAL food...and I got it...
Well...50 pounds later and finding myself in a size tight 16-18 pants...something that I NEVER THOUGHT WOULD HAPPEN WITH A LAP BAND INSTALLED....HAPPENED TO ME...ME? I was the person that was obsessed with the scale, someone who walked at 5 each morning, in 20-30 degree temperatures for 6 straight years...because I HAD CHANGED MY LIFESTYLE FOREVER? EVER ...EVER?
Once I found a surgeon to HELP me repair my hernia, give me a second chance to get my "grove back" I was humbled and grateful..
THE MORAL OF MY POST IS...NEVER THINK YOU GOT THIS WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY IN THE PALM OF YOUR HANDS....BECAUSE ANYTHING CAN COME AND TAKE IT AWAY FROM YOU ....
When the lap band is UNFILLED AFTER YEARS OF EATING HARDLY NOTHING...your metabolism gets SHOT...and if you EVER have to get unfilled....THE WEIGHT CAN COME BACK QUICKLY...I GAINED 20 pounds in ONE month....
And oh yea....after I had ..had my feel of Burgers and Cheese Steaks....it was too late to eat Broccoli and baked chicken....no matter what I'd done with a LOOSE band...I could NOT get the weight off UNTIL I got my lap band properly restricted again.....
It took over 14 months JUST TO LOSE the 50 pound weight gain, I was FINALLY BACK to my old lap band fighting weight ...it sure was not easy like it was when I was first banded...
So while my lap band (SuzieQ) is working NOW in full over load.....I still want to stuff my face and I can't, I just can't do it.....and you know what? I glad.... ...
Please respect your band and cherish with love, because one day...you may find yourself IN FREEDOM with an unfilled band and that is a very SCARY place to be!
