It may be a good idea. I've done WW about four times myself so I share your sentiment. Towards the end, I struggled to stay within my points, which is why I always fell off the wagon lol. Another option you may want to consider is joining over eaters anonymous, if a group setting is what you're seeking. I have read other posters on here discuss their positive experiences with the group.

Hi, I am also in Maryland. I went to a seminar last night at AAMC, and when I called my insurance this morning they said if I go to doctor at University of Maryland, they will pay 90%. So I am filling out my paperwork now. What hospital are you going to have your surgery at?

Gallbladder removed and afterward you can’t tolerate a lot of the foods you used to (to cover up why your portions are so small or your food is so different)

I told people i was doing a medically supervised weight loss program. Which is kind of true haha. I basically told them my actual diet but that it was a nutritionist and doctor supervised program, not a surgery. Works on all fronts so far.

When I graduated from nursing school we had a pinning ceremony. After we all marched in, a classmate (about the same size of me) sat down and the chair legs bent in four different directions! I felt so embarrassed for her ! The worst part is that some people laughed. I think that's sorta cruel to laugh at someone's humiliation :-(

My viewpoint is different from most of the others on this thread. I have never been ashamed that I'm fat. I've been disgusted with my lack of willpower, and dissatisfied with my size, but not ashamed.
I'm a nurse, working in an administrative job in a small hospital. Another nurse was hired for a similar position in our hospital, and in the course of conversation he soon volunteered the information that he had the sleeve surgery. I was aware of the band and RNY, but had not heard of the sleeve, so I asked some questions, did my research and decided to start the journey. When I scheduled the time off for the surgery it just seemed natural to tell my peers on the management team the purpose of that leave. They have ALL been supportive, which has helped me tremendously. My only family - 2 sisters and 1 brother - all live hours away, and while we are emotionally close and do keep in touch by phone and email, it's great to have supportive people whom I see every work day. Now I get to hear several times a week congratulations on how great I look and other congratulatory stuff. I'll TAKE it!

I took one week vacation time and went back on post op day 10 also. No complications. I was on full liquids the first few days so I just had plain lowfat yogurt for lunch, then threw half of it away because I couldn't eat a full container yet!

I'm having issues telling people also. Only my hubby, sisters, mom about it..I don't feel comfortable telling coworkers. Especially since I work with nurses (not a nurse myself) .I hear what they say about patients when they come to our department post op. I don't even know what I will tell my manager yet when I have to request time off..should I take FMLA. I was thinking I should tell them I'm having hiatel hernia repair? Which is also try I was told after my upper GI..doctor said he will repair while his doing the surgery. Realllly don't want to say ANYTHING til maybe when I return to work.

Hi everyone my name is Kimberly and I'm 24. I'm a recent college grad and new RN. I have struggled all my life with my weight and I have tried everything I can think of. In the end, I know my battle lies with Portion Control. When I was 19 I tried a popular weight loss medication (that I'm sure most of you have tried as well, so no name is needed lol) available only by a physician as well as B12 injections. After 8 months I had lost 65 lbs. But my blood pressure was through the roof, and I began suffering daily headaches. That was the lowest weight I can remember being (183). Even at 5'3'', that was still too much for my height. Since I stopped, all the weight came back and then some. I have dieted and exercised, but I have yet to go under 200 lbs. Last time I was weighed, I was 238. Which is why I am researching sleeve gastrectomy. Next thursday I am going to my first information session about it. The hospital system in which I will be working for has a bariatric program, and I am interested in hearing about this procedure.

Even though I was much smaller in high school and college, i have had people make fun of me for everything from wearing glasses, to having a Book poking out my backpack, to not listening to rap music. When I dyed my hair blonde, i was accused of being "fake". When i dyed my hair black i was called a wanna be Goth.
It doesn't feel good but what i have learned from it is that (stupid) people are ALWAYS going to have something negative to say. you can be the embodiment of physical perfection and beauty and someone is going to be nasty just because.
still, i'm sorry you had to experience it. I remind myself that people who are truly happy with themselves don't have to belittle others. If you have beauty and happiness inside, that's what you project. If you are full of ugliness and have issues with yourself, then that's what you project.
Plus college boys are idiots. I remember my college boyfriend, his friend and I were walking to class when a girl who was probably like a size 20 or 22 walked across our path. The idiot friend (who was bug eyed, gangly and used to beg for food from other student because he used his meal plan money to buy a guitar, new clothes and other crap) burst out into laughter and gawked so hard like she had 10 heads, was purple, weighed 1,000lbs and was riding a unicycle.
He immediately started up with the fat jokes and kept trying to get us to join in. We both just kind of looked at him and bf was like "so, she's heavy. Why do you care?" And i was like "yeah. how would you feel if she was laughing at you for being scrawny?"
Immediately his friend tried to backpedal and say he was just kidding around and it was cool she was big and more power to her.
I feel like people say stupid sh-- like that to fit in. I'm sure if we had jumped on the fat band wagon, it would've kept up. Screw those guys.

There's nothing worse than guys in college. I'm so sorry that happened to you. They are idiots.
I lived in a college town for a long time and was often hooted and hollered at for various reasons. One time I was literally wearing a huge long coat, boots, a huge hat and scarf. I could have been a man. It was freezing and these idiots still honked the horn and screamed and hollered at me.
It's a stupid thing that young men do to feel better about themselves, whether they are dying you are fat or are whistling at women both are meant to make you feel like you are less than human and just an object.
So what you are fat? That's like them saying "you are blonde! Hey you are blonde!" Um ok???? As you know you can lose weight but they can't grow their tiny penises any bigger.
It's easy to scream at people from behind the wheel of a car if you are an insecure idiot.
Honestly after your surgery you will probably have boys hooting at you for being hot. That's what they do. I would keep a phone and next time that happens start videoing them and tell then you will put it on YouTube and Facebook.

It seems to me that it weight is the last socially acceptable physical aspect to make fun of or criticize. Do you remember the movie Shallow Hal? It was disgusting.
I'm sorry you went through this and hope that you can put it behind you. Internalizing it is really hurting you more than the original comment. I think the comments will end as we loose weight, but nothing will change if we can't let go of that pain.

nursekimberly89 reacted to Jencovi in Have you ever been chastised by another doctor for having weight loss surgery?
My long time PCP retired last year. He was always so supportive of me wanting to try anything to help me lose weight. When he retired I started seeing a woman (who really is a wonderful doctor and nice lady). We started talking about my weight struggle and how I had my band removed from complications. I told her my new surgeon suggested the gastric sleeve or gastric bypass. She said "Oh honey, you aren't big enough to have one of those barbaric surgeries" and suggested a diet book and prescribed an appetite suppressant.

Jump to 8 months later. I couldn't get in to see her for a refill on my ADHD meds so they put me in with her partner. My quick "I just need a refill" appt became an hour long discussion on my medical history, my weight and my type 1 diabetes. She then asked if I had thought about weight loss surgery again and I said I had brought it up to the other doc but she clearly wasn't on board. My new doctor ( I had already adopted her as my new doc before we even got to the WLS talk) then went on to tell me about her brother who was obese and had the band. He had a band failure story similar to mine and then had the sleeve. What I loved was she didn't just say "you need this" but she gave me a real, personal story about her brother who really was near death and now has a healthy fulfilling life. We ended the appointment with her simply asking me to go see my surgeon again. She encouraged me to take my husband and ask all our questions and voice our concerns. So we did.

I'm scheduled for surgery 2/13 and am so grateful for my new PCP. I know my first one meant well. She was never mean and always encouraged me to try something new, whether it am activity or meal plan. But I do wonder where I could be now if I had started off with Dr. Warner. I guess it's all about the journey. It's a learning experience.

    So many straws.
Watching my cousin go from 400+ pounds, dieting down to 160 pounds, then bouncing back up to 400+ pounds and dying at 50.
Yo-yo dieting for 45 years, gaining a few more pounds every time.
Watching my sister yo-yo diet up to 280 pounds, and start to lose her mobility and her zest for life.
Having more and more trouble controlling my hypertension.
Developing sore shoulders and hips, that don't get better with physical therapy.
Having a fall and breaking 4 ribs ... and still having pain 15 years later.
Having a fall and breaking a bone in my back ... and still having back pain 18 months later.
Hating to see myself in photos.
Not being able to dress with the style I would like.
The last straw? Feeling like food is my master.

I love this topic. Honestly if it hadn't been for my stupid pride, and for being a fool and thinking WLS was cheating and I should be able to manage my own weight, I would have done this sooner and been a lot happier. Having my son changed my point of view. Now I don't care who knows that I had WLS to lose the weight. Everyone I have told has been really supportive. If anyone did want to call me a cheater they would find two things; first, I don't care because it is about being happy, healthy and being here for my family. Secondly, said person would probably be seeing a lot less of me as I don't have time for other people's negativity anymore. Part of my journey has been getting past worrying about what other people think, because the honest truth in hindsight is that my assumptions about what people thought or would think were generally wrong.

nursekimberly89 reacted to BrantS1976 in Plication newbie here
Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Brant and I had the plication surgery on October 24th and have lost 69 pounds. I had the surgery here in Washington as part of a clinical trial. Upon doing my research on the different procedures it interested me as you do not have the potential for a leaking staple line like the VSG. I know that complication is highly uncommon, but the idea of having my stomach held closed with staples was a bit disconcerting. The clincher was that my insurance would not cover any procedure, so I was going to be private pay, and plication was almost $6k less as the after care was included for participating in the study. I look forward to seeing what everyone else has to share as we all go through this journey together. In just under four months this process has already significantly changed my life and my only regret is that I did not do it sooner.
