  1. My surgeon said to keep sugar alcohol intake fairly low, or at leadt keep aware of it She said that it will cause gas and therefore a lot of discomfort if you have too much.
  2. Yum I'm going to make this this week.
  3. Oh my goodness, I've been having the same thoughts. I don't really mind people knowing my business, I should but I don't. I worry that i'm going to regret it and that I'm going to hear I told you so from people. I'm not scheduled for surgery yet but my pre-op is scheduled for June 22 or something close to that.
  4. Welcome to our little family of support here. Congrats on your surgery.
  5. Thank you. Not all my family is against it. I think the ones that are are just scared of the unknown. But they'll support me because they know it's what I want. And now that they can see me really trying to lose weight again they know there is no stopping me. I don't resent my family for their concern, that's what family is supposed to do (show concern). I get nervous about having the surgery. I know people who regret it and I know people who would never go back to the way they were. When I hear about people having problems I get scared. I don't have high blood pressure, diabetes or anything that goes along with morbid obesity. Well I do have high cholesterol actually. But my dad and his dad have diabetes. I don't want to get it. I have a support network on here and with a few friends that have had it done. I'm going to be okay no matter what I decide to do. I've made good changes with my diet and I know what makes me feel crappy. Thank you for your support. Good luck with your journey.
  6. Good luck, that liquid diet is the one that scares me the most. I think I'll be able to handle the soft/puréed stage. My surgeon even gave me recipes to turn the soft stage into meals not just boring yuckiness.
  7. I've heard that the mental hunger is the worst. We've been eating unhealthily for so long that our minds crave the bad stuff. It doesn't even have to be the bad stuff tho. I know people who craved salads and another who craved eggs but couldn't stand the taste anymore. That mental hunger is what makes my husband worry about me having the surgery. Mamiof3-Most people who go through with this surgery, know this isn't a quick fix thing. Some people cannot handle the depression brought on by the mental hunger, they end up giving in to it, realize they don't dump, and they just start eating again like before. That being said, I also am looking forward to new ways of having sex.
  8. Hi amy0501, thank you for supportive words. my husband has become supportive. He does worry about me but he knows that i want this surgery badly. He does hope that I'll lose enough weight before my surgery that I'll decide I don't need it. I've lost 15 lbs since march. I'm eating healthier by cutting out a lot of sugars, lowering my calories and fat, and increasing my Protein intake. I feel better about my weight loss this time around. I can occasionally have something that is not good for me and when I do I feel like crap so I try not to make that mistake again. But I have at least 2 more months before I could have the surgery. I'm going to continue trying to lose. I did tell him and my grandma (she worries a lot about me) that if I lose 50 lbs before surgery that I will not do it. My grandpa has promised me $1000 if I lose 100 lbs w/out surgery. So I guess we'll see what happens. Thank you again
  9. I know Jessica, it's crazy expensive. And it's difficult dealing with discouragement. That's why we now have RNY Talk and a good support group.
  10. I'm sorry that your husband isn't supportive. It has taken him some time to come around. He is of the mind that it is my body and it's not his place to tell me what I can and can't do with my body. He would much rather I found something else to do instead of the surgery. He really worries about my mental health and i think I'm showing him that this surgery is what I need.
  11. You're both absolutely right. It's stupid that to eat healthy we have to spend more money. My husband and I have gotten to the point where we want to grow our own fruits & veggies so that we don't have to spend so much money at the store. It also tastes better when it's home grown. I want to get my family away from eating out of boxes but it is hard.
  12. Jessica, I remember you saying that you're a picky eater. This is the perfect time to challenge yourself to not only try new foods but maybe even attempt to use the blender and try to cook. Try to find some RNY friendly recipes and see if you can make some. It's good practice.
  13. Oh yeah, since the beginning of March I've been having a protein shake for breakfast and trying to limit my fat, sugar and caloric intake. I did this for me, not my surgeon. I've lost 10.5 lbs so far. One thing that I notice that is different for me now as opposed to when I was doing weight watchers is that now I don't want the junk food. Back then I did. I almost would be okay if my surgeon said I couldn't have the surgery in July or August but I had to wait until October or November. Just so I can have longer time to train myself and make sure that I can continue this dietary guide without any problems. Anyway that's a little more about me.
  14. Hi, I've posted a few times on here but this time I'll talk about me. I'm 30 years old, I have been married almost 11 years, we have 2 boys, ages 9 and 6. I've been overweight my whole life. I grew up with my mom telling me about my aunt who was overweight but slimmed down once she started her period. So my mon would let me eat and drink pretty much whatever I wanted. I have a friend who can recall when I'd go to her house as a 9/10 year old and I'd have a bag (big bag) of Doritos. She'd worry about my health and I'd explain that it's just baby fat, I'll lose it when I get my period. Well, I never lost the baby fat. I did weight watchers several times with my mom, I did the Atkins diet, I wanted to go on phen-phen but it was too late, I tried several other things, but nothing worked for me. I needed to change my whole lifestyle. As a teenager I was a size 14/16 and when I got my drivers license at 16 I was 205, I thought I was huge. I got married when I was 20, and I wore a size 18 and I weighed 220. My husband thought my little pudge, as he called it, was cute. When I was pregnant with our first son I gained about 55 lbs, I never lost it. I joined a gym and lost 15 lbs. But it was hard to take that time away from my baby. I quit going to the gym. I joined weight watchers again, I lost 20 lbs., but it got to be too expensive so I quit. In 2005 I got pregnant with my youngest, I weighed 285. 9 months later I weighed 274, I only craved healthy good when I was pregnant with him. But after he was born the weight came back on quickly. About 4-5 years ago I had to get my tonsils removed. When they weighed me in I was 316 lbs. I was devastated. I cried to my husband, who tried to console me by telling me that my body fat was the reason we weren't intimate anymore. I was even more devastated.(don't worry he's really not a giant jackass) That was when I decided that I had to do something and I seriously considered gastric bypass. I went to a couple of seminars and my husband went with me. We discussed it for some time and I had even gone through the psych eval, but in the end I decided that I'd try weight watchers again. I tried my hardest, I lost 27 lbs. I was doing great. I had a couple of weeks where I didn't lose and I quit. I went to curves, did good and enjoyed it. But we couldn't afford it so I quit again. I'm sick of the yo-yoing. I went to a seminar 3 hours away from my house on April 2 . I filled out the paperwork and they called within 2 days to schedule an appointment, I had my first true appointment on the 11th, then on the 13th I had my EKG, my blood test, and my chest x-ray. I went back on the 20th for a group nutrition meeting. I have appointments scheduled for my one on one nutrition meeting, my follow up with the surgeon and my last appointment before surgery (provided everything goes well) and I scheduled my psych eval for the first part of June. My husband is supportive but nervous for my mental health afterwards. Since I'm the one who cooks and prepares the meals he worries that I'll get really depressed due to mental hunger. I understand his very valid concern. Any advise is really appreciated. Thank you all for your support and I look forward to making friends on here and helping each other through tough times. And I'm sorry I am so type/talkative
  15. I'm sorry for the setback Jessica. But try to look at the positive side. You'll now have more time to figure out post surgery things. Try to figure out what protein you like best. Try to eat, at least to a small degree, like you will after surgery. Make sure you're exercising and being the best you. I know how the bmi goes. I think at my heaviest I was 54, I'm down now to 49. I will weigh in on Friday to see if I've lost any weight this week. I'm not feeling like I have at all. One thing I'm grateful for is the time to figure out how to eat, drink and live post op before going through surgery. I'm working on not eating many sweets, chips or drinking any carbonated drinks. I'm trying to prepare myself life after surgery. Just don't get discouraged, instead use this time to make adjustments. Congratulations on kicking the bad habit and good luck continuing on that road.
  16. You'd better be careful with the fruit. Even tho the sugars in fruit are natural they're still sugars. My surgeon suggested frozen berries as far as eating fruit. I'd try adding ice, blending it and add fruit essence or extracts. I'm not sure about extracts as far as how healthy they are but essences purchased at health food stores would be best so soon after your surgery. Good luck! You could probably try nectar protein or soy if the whey is not your thing too. Look up bariatriceating on line. They have a good selection.
  17. I was actually pleasantly surprised at how much I liked the chicken broth protein. Just make sure you get other flavors too. I really dislike strawberry but my surgeon said to mix it with crystal light lemonade, it's pretty good that way. Just don't get bored. Good luck on your liquids.
  18. Congratulations on your loss! Woohoo!
  19. You should check with your surgeon to see if there is a specific protein that you should use. My surgeon says pretty much all are good as long as they're made with whey protein. I personally like EAS (I buy these at Walmart or food maxx) also the Atkins Protein drinks are good. They're premixed or you can buy EAS in powder form. The only protein my surgeon doesn't want me using is the collagen based, you find it in the protein shots which sound nice because they're small but you don't absorb as much of the protein. You should check Walmart, bariatriceating.com or Vitamin shots. Good luck.
  20. Thank you all for your support. I do have to add that my husband is kinda supportive he just doesn't like that I'm going to do it. I did have him go with me to my first appointment with my surgeon and that made him feel better. He's worried that somehow I'll make it difficult for his dieting. Or that I'll be so depressed about not being able to eat like I do now. Which I know from speaking with several friends who've had it done that it is a valid concern. One friend told me that she didn't expect the overwhelming sense of loss over food. So I know to expect it. If I don't have that feeling then great but if I do I'll hopefully be able to recognize it and cope with it. I'm so glad I found this forum. I need people to talk to who understand. Thank you all very much.
  21. Jessica89- thank you for your support. I had my first appointment with the surgeon last Monday, this Friday I go meet with a nutritionist, I had my EKG, blood test, and chest X-ray on Friday last week too. I just scheduled my psych eval for June. My husband has told me he doesn't agree with my decision but he supports it. He is over weight, but is losing by riding bicycles. He wants me to be more active but I'm not lazy, I just don't ride bikes or like hiking like he does. My mom thinks because I'm losing weight on my own by cutting out a meal and replacing it with a protein shake I shouldn't have to go through with surgery now. I keep trying to explain that I'm 290 lbs, I have a lot more than 10 lbs to lose. If I had less than 80 lbs to lose I probably wouldn't do the RNY but realistically I should lose at least 120. And since other things have not worked I feel like this is my last shot. I appreciate all the support. I need all I can get, we all do.
  22. This is my first post, hope I'm doing it correctly. I understand what you're going through. I'm dealing with the same nay-sayers in my life. I have some friends that are truly supportive and my sister is too. But my husband and mom and other family members are totally against it. I was feeling great about everything early last week, now I'm feeling sick to my stomach and nervous. I'm a ways out from surgery (probably August) so I have time to think long and hard about it and prove to them that this is my decision and it's the right one. Good luck with the process and dealing with negative people.
