I don't have a PhD, but I'm pretty sure that it is very common practice to fix the hernia with the sleeve. A hiatal hernia is where a portion of your stomach has bulged above the diaphragm. The surgeon would fix this in order to even perform the VSG. A high majority of surgeons remove the gall bladder if there are any stones present, or remove it as a preventative measure.
I know I went back to work about a week after my gall bladder was removed with no problems at all. I haven't had my sleeve yet, so I'm unable to help with an estimated recovery time.
