supbanana got a reaction from SuninVirgo in Ketogenic diet post-surgery?
Hi guys, I ran a search but not much popped up.
I've been on a ketogenic diet (high fat, moderate Protein, very low carb - basically the induction to Atkins except you keep it up forever) for the last 15 months. I know it's not a very well-understood diet and gets a lot of flak, but it's been great for me. I'm healthier than I've ever been and I adore this style of eating so much. The only problem is I hit a wall hard in the weight-loss department, hence the surgery.
I'm wondering if anyone has had experience eating this way post-op? I know low-fat gets pushed a lot in surgeon-recommended diets, but I'm not sure if that's because low-fat is part of the government's idea of a healthy diet, or if there's an actual physical purpose? I think some people have mentioned fatty foods made them sick, but are they talking about doughnuts, or ribeye?
If it's not possible then I'll accept it and just stay as low carb as possible, but I would really like to stick with Keto after surgery if possible and am looking for reasons it might not be a good idea.

I'm a BBW (well, big, idk about beautiful) that is insanely attracted to tall fat guys. Like John Goodman status. I'm 5'10" and I've always been very fat in an area where most people are both shorter than me and skinnier by a good chunk. I've never really felt feminine and always kind of feel like a freak. Being around a guy that is both taller and heavier than me makes me feel like an actual woman instead of an awkward Amazon, which is such a rare feeling because in my area there are very few men that match that profile.
My only boyfriend was 6'4" and weighed 160lbs when I weighed 270. I always felt like I was going to snap him like a twig and was constantly self conscious about it.

I was sleeved 11/3/14 but I had my Mirena IUD already in place. However, it took my body a good six months to fully adjust to the IUD when I had it put in. This is not a hormone-free IUD so it could possibly interfere with weight but I wouldn't have it removed immediately unless you had severe problems. Give your body some time to adjust to it. I love my IUD! I haven't used a tampon in almost four years. It hasn't seemed to prevent me from losing but then again I'm only 6 months post-surgery.

Not personally but my daughter who is slim but fights a constant battle to stay that way (no surgery) found it made no difference at all to her. She monitored it because she thought it might.

Ha, I have kind of an 'all in one' deal. My grandma likes to tell me, "wow honey, you sure can tell you lost weight!" Which is great, but reminds me of how she used to say, "gosh honey, you sure can tell you gained weight!"
My favorite compliments though? Apparently surgery increased my confidence or something because people keep commenting on my excellent posture, how regal I look, how I walk with 'poise', etc. I love it.

YES! I had surgery 1/18/14 and it has saved my life! I am only 22 yrs old and have been overweight my entire life. Dr. Illan and his team are AMAZING. The hospital is very well equipped and clean. The staff there were on top of everything and so very sweet. Dr. Illan comes to the hotel after your 2 night stay in the hospital to check on your incisions and Omar comes everyday to talk you for broth and a little site seeing if time allows. It was more like a vacation than a surgery! There were others in the hospital that were sleeved by another Dr and they just didn't have the same experience like we did. They had a good surgery but were left to take cabs to visit shopping areas and eat. WE are not left to do so. Our patient coordinator takes care of us before, during and afterwards. We have a FB page and he still is checking in on us after surgery. We are a big family now and I'm so glad I chose Dr. Illan with Baja Bariatrics. Please check out their page or email bajabariatrics@yahoo.com or call 619-623-5368. There is no pressure to have the surgery and they will answer all your questions. you can even skype with Dr. Illan to help ease your mind. I HAVE MY LIFE BACK for the first time. I'm ready to live healthy and start living! LOVE MY SLEEVE!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for asking! Im doing great! I will be a month post op in a few days and I am down 24 pounds. I can totally see a difference in my clothes, the way I look and the way I feel. I am so happy with my decision! I started with a lower BMI of 35 or 36- so I dont expect to lose as fast as others but I am happy with journey so far. I definitely have a tight sleeve which is something I obsessed over when choosing a doctor. I know I cannot over eat with this sleeve. A few bites of anything and Im done.

I'm sitting pretty in a size 18 for the first time that I can remember, and yesterday was my six month surgiversary, so I thought I would write up an update, especially considering my post detailing my experience with Dr. Illan was somehow lost during the update.
First off, here is a Dr. Illan and three weeks later was in Mexico having the surgery. I've more or less consistently lost 10 pounds per month since surgery. It hasn't always been easy, and stalls have happened, but it is by far the best thing I've ever done. I honestly often forget that I've had surgery. Dr. Illan's team provided the best medical care I've ever had in my life and I would go back to him in a heartbeat!
Just to make this more fun, here's a progress pic, highest ever weight vs. today:

Absolutely. Dr. Illan and his team completely transformed my life. I still say they offered the best medical care I've ever had in my life. I would feel comfortable recommending any of my loved ones to go to him and genuinely wish he did plastics so that I could go back myself!
Omar is also completely fantastic. In addition to taking superhuman care of his patients (seriously, I don't know how he manages to be so attentive to everyone at once), he noticed that the husband of a patient of a different doctor had nothing to eat and took that man out for food.
They completely go above and beyond in every way!

Illan with Baja Bariatrics? YES Would I go back to Mexico to be sleeved? YES! Am I happy with my decision? YES!
Dr. Illan is a very talented surgeon and his WHOLE team is amazing! I took a family member back in January to be sleeved and would recommend his team to anyone. While in Tijuana I met other patients from different doctors and noticed they didn't have someone there checking in to make sure their spouse/friend/family member had eaten or was ok. When out shopping with Omar I ran into the same people who had to take a cab and had no idea what to do or where to shop. The Baja Bariatric team goes OVER & BEYOND anything you can even think of during your stay. I've lost 101 lbs thus far and am beyond thrilled with my surgery and support I have received from Baja Bariatrics

Hm, it looks like my post about my experience with Dr. Illan was deleted, but I can honestly say it was the best medical experience of my entire life. I have the experience recorded on my blog if you want to check it out:

This before/after isn't entirely accurate because I started the surgery process at 300lbs, not 340, but today I'm down to 240 (I've lost 60 pounds since August 1st)! Love my sleeve so much, highly recommend Dr. Illan, would go back in a heartbeat.
