AB2B reacted to anonmom in What to bring to hospital?
I'm having surgery on Thursday and it just occurred to me that I need to bring a bag to the hospital. And I hate packing. It gives me insane anxiety.
When I had my daughter, six years ago, I packed totally wrong for the hospital. I was told to pack clothes that I wore when I was around 6 months pregnant. What a joke! I literally lost 9 pounds after giving birth, pretty much exactly enough to account for the weight of the baby plus the placenta. And my feet were so swollen when I got out that I had to wear a pair of slippers home because none of my shoes fit.
I remember some people on my mom board saying they put makeup in their hospital bags, but I honestly don't care what I look like when I'm recovering. In my pre-op class they said NOT to bring meds, that they would give us anything we take regularly, plus anything we need for any pain or discomfort.
When I gave birth they had me in hospital gowns the whole time. I only got dressed to go home. Is it the same way with bariatric surgery? If so, I really only need a baggy shirt, leggings, undergarments, socks and slippers, right? Deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, I guess. What else?

It really depends on how long you are staying in for but the things I took and used were:
Change of clothes for going home (baggy dress as I couldnt stand anything round my tummy)
    Toiletries/hair brush
    GasX strips
Lip balm (dont use Vasaline if you are on oxygen after the surgery!!)
    Mobile and charger
    Ipad/kindle and charger
    Some magazines
    3 nightdresses (I stayed in 5 nights)
For the drive home, my husband brought a pillow so I could put the seat belt round it.

Just hit 100 lbs post op. Still a steady loss. I wish I would have done this years ago.

I don't think I'd do anything differently. The thing I'm glad I did was follow my doctors orders to the letter, pre and post op.

For biatriatrica14 and jazzyjay I didn't do nothing special I followed directions, and waited until the Dr cleared me to go to the Gym. Before he did that I would walk my kids to school and home, but when I was cleared oh boy right away I got my membership at the gym. I basically motivated myself, had lots of friends that said they would support me and come with me and they all became lagers. But I didn't let that stop me a pair of ear phones and Pandora was all I needed. I would go 2x day am and pm. U can say I became addicted to working out. When my kids were home for the weekends I would make it fun and wrkout with them which they luved, warmed up at home and took them to a trail which was teN miles back and forth. Made it fun for them but got my workout out of the way.

I took a flight on JetBlue this past Sunday and the most exciting moment since my surgery was NOT needing a seatbelt extension and having to actually tighten it.. one of my biggest low points came last year when I had to ask for one in front of my wife.. since November 9th I'm down 67 pounds and feel liberated..

Exactly I joined this group the beginning of November, I haven't had surgery yet either. So I come here for guidance and support because who really wants to sit and hear me talk about vsg everyday? That and I didn't tell many ppl anyway.

I was worried right up until they wheeled me into the OR. (I had never had any kind of surgery in my entire life.) But it was nowhere near as bad or scary as I had built it up to be in my mind. In fact, the entire experience was pretty easy. Yes, I felt really lousy for the first two days post-op. Really lousy. But, by Day 3 post-op, I started feeling better and getting back out in the world again. And I recovered quickly.
My advice is to see what the requirements are, get started immediately (choose low-carb or something that works for you and see what you can take off pre-op), and then follow your plan exactly post-op. You will lose weight and you will be successful. I am living proof of that.
    Good luck!

I have not had my surgery yet. I am so excited to get this process started. This site has helped answer so much curiosity and questions. However, I NEVER imagined that so many from this site would participate in a thread like that one. Very discouraging to see this behavior.
    Well said Raymia.

Hi Debbie, I'm also just starting out. Today
Was my first visit with the surgeon.
I prayed that everything would go
Smoothly and it did. The said thing
Is I allowed my weight to get so
Out of control. I got on the scale
To be weighed. Can not believe
I weigh 365 pounds. And even
More disturbing at 51 years old
I can't' remember the last time.
    I weighed under 200 pounds.
Nervous but ready to save my
Life That's exactly what I plan
To do .Take my life back .
I wish the same for you.

You have made the right decision. It will take effort to go thru the process needed to have the surgery, but it is worth it. Once you are on your weight loss journey life is so much better.

The gas pain is the number one complaint of most WLS patients in the early days. As much as you don't want to, walking really will help get rid of it faster. So get up and walk around as much as you can stand to.

Just posted this in another thread this morning:
It's important to remind yourself that you made the decision to have surgery when you were in a logical/rational state of mind. Last-minute jitters are common, but they are emotional and irrational. Don't let them deter you from following through on a decision that you made after a LONG period of research and reflection.

I'm a private person and have not told anyone at work about my surgery. Last Friday a co-worker, who is also obese, took the liberty to comment on my weight loss. " You're just wasting away! You look good. But you don't need to loose anymore weight."
I was so shocked and really wasn't ready for a comment like that. All I could do was laugh it off.
Fast forward to today. A different co-worker said the same thing to me. " You're wasting away"
I just responded with "yeah your right."
All of my co-workers are used to seeing me at 260 pounds . I am now 185. I'm still obese and have no intention to self sabotage my progress because of anyone's ideal of what "Looks good enough."
My goal is to become healthy and maintain a "normal bmi." I'm sure others will begin to comment even more as time progresses.
I'm staying on plan and I'm ready for the haters.
