Shells_Almost_There got a reaction from READY4CHANGE2013 in Did you keep your surgery a secret?
I was counseled by the psych guy to not tell anyone. He has had WLS as well, and said that it's better to not make it hugely public (unless a person really wants to - personal choice of course), because of the scrutiny people then subject you to. I agree with him, and decided to tell only a few close friends and my mother. No one else in my family knows, although I will end up telling my step dad. So, right now, a total of 7 people know...soon to be 8. I am not ashamed, but I don't like being under scrutiny like that! A bunch of people at my work have had surgery and everyone knows -- that's just not for me at this time in my life. (By the way, I'm realistic - eventually word will probably get out but for now, here's my line: "Thanks for noticing I'm losing weight. I'm working with my doctor and a nutritionist, following a high-protein, low-carb diet.") - which is all true Good luck to you!

Hang in there! This type of reality check can be very painful, and can be a reminder of the long road ahead. Good luck!

Save the best bite for FIRST because it's highly unlikely I will get to eat it if I save it for last!
I "blame" a lot of my weight issues on my previous tendency to make big luscious meals, pile my plate high and then save the best bites for last, ensuring that I will clean my plate.
I've always done this, from my first PB&J (eat around the crust first, from the driest bottom side, all the way around the edge to the squishy under butt of the crust and then circling around to the fattest middle filled with squishy deliciousness), to a pan of brownies (eat all the gooey, slightly under baked middle first, saving the crispy edges for last). I had a method of gluttony for eating everything (green bean casserole, push most of the crispy onions to one side to be enjoyed in the last crunchy salty bite) and the last bite had to be eaten no matter how stuffed I was. After all, it was the best bite, right?
Never did I consider simply cutting off the crust, just eating the edge of the brownies or simply adding a few more onions to a smaller portion of casserole. My mom has always been skinny and her dieting motto was to always leave at least one bite of everything on your plate, two bites of your favorite thing. My skinny friends rarely finish their plates nor do they need to eye everyone else's plate for one delicious morsel.
It really feels good to eat my bites best to worst, because when I am done, I'm done! It's still habit to save the best for last, but it's one I'm breaking slowly now that I've missed out on it so many times.

You didn't mention if you are actually taking your Vitamins, but I read yesterday that this same scenario happened to another post-op person and it turned out that their potassium was low. Definitely worth checking when you see your PCP. Good luck, hope you feel better soon.

Interestingly, I specifically asked my surgeon about this last week, and she absolutely shook her head NO. She prescribes preventative meds for all her post-op patients instead. As with most things on web forums such as this, it is easy to find contradictory information. Trust your own doctor, ask questions if you have them.

It's been 3 weeks now since my surgery, I'm off the clear liquid stage (thank God!) but my next stage isn't too exciting ... I'm allowed to eat eggs low fat yogurt, cottage cheese, and vegetables. Unfortunately I don't like cottage cheese ;( I tried but just didn't like it. My favorite vegetable spinach I tried scrambled with eggs And my stomach didn't like it so much. I'm starting to really get tired of eggs next week I can eat fish happy about that. The greatest news is I am down 18lbs!! Woohoo

I think it's completely normal! I did the same thing and I think I'm better prepared for it. I lurked on this site for months before I even went to the doc's office for the first time. It helped me know what the ups and downs of this process can be. I also began dietary changes over a few months so that by the time I went to the office for my initial appointments I was off my diet soda habit and had essentially kicked my sugar addiction (I still cheat a little)...
Keep up the enthusiasm! And yes, the light at the end of the tunnel for me was seeing the amazing results of the surgery by reading the tickers of the great people here. I can't wait til mine shows a little UMPH with significant weight gone and an improved BMI!
