I too have almost the exact same pr-op weight amd no pre-op diet reccomended. Now, I stopped drinking alcohol several months ago and generally try to watch carb intake. I also gave up soda and caffeine in March and haven't missed it. I trust my surgeons advice. I am doing some pre op restriction in order to try to make his job easier but definitely not a pre op diet. I was scheduled for surgery initially in March and I cancelled the day before surgery. I had not purchased my Protein, Soups, Vitamins, nothing. I wasn't ready mentally but I know that I am now. I've started trying to get used to the protein and started eating yogurt which will be a staple afterwards. I also bought my vitamins and some things I will need for the hospital. That all helped to make it more real for me. Counseling never hurt anybody. But, only you know yourself and only you can decide if you are ready. Everything else is just the opinion of people who have struggled with the same issues that you (and I ) have and have done no better with them (or they would not be on this forum in the first place). It sounds to me like you feel you are ready and are just having a hard time right now. Sounds to me like you also have the pre-surgery jitters that almost everyone gets. I know there is a balance that people are trying to strike between giving you some hard truth which is post- surgery we must follow the doc ordered diet or we can cause a leak or other serious problems! (I am not saying that everyone that gets a leak causes it) and trying to be supportive. Think about talking to the nurse or coordinator in your surgeons office - it will probably give you some peace of mind. You could even pose it as a hypothetical "say a person my size had great difficulty following the pre op diet and only followed it about 50-75% of the time. Does that make the surgery too risky? Should that person cancel?" I bet it would give you some peace of mind.

    Hey there Kelly:
I don't think you are doomed, I do know that a pre-op diet can serve as a "training ground" for post surgery. Some folks really do thrive and do well on what they HAVE to do (like post surgery) when you'll be physically restricted. I know my pre-op diet helped me to ease into a new way of eating and helped change my relationship to food in general, (eating slowly, only having certain things etc). It got my mind ready, I think just as much as my body. You do sound like you are preparing yourself for after, which is great. Commit to following what your doctor lays out for after surgery. Some folks progress their diets on their own or "cheat" because someone posted that they were ok doing so. They are lucky. We all handle recovery different, I would hate to read about anyone getting sick or doing harm to themselves for not following doctors recommendations.
Best of luck to you for your surgery! You will love your sleeve!

Nicolanz! Well, I really am taking it one hour at a time. I did great yesterday - stuck to the plan - nothing but Protein shakes - though I forgot about the Water. Today I've had a ton of Water and a cup of broth. Hopefully the rest of the day will go just as well.
    How are you?

Cmon, this is Psych 101...... You're about to give up all the foods you luv.........You know the nice....big.....stomach is still there and can handle any amount you cram in there. And the food probably taste better than ever before cause you're savoring each bite.........and of course the ole stomach hormones are pumping out the "foooood".....give me fooood signals.
But no worries......in a few short hours.......your brain will be warning....no .....telling you.......NO no no.....if you eat that, your stomach will EXPLODE!!!!!! and you'll die.......And I have a feeling you'll listen. After all, that IS why we are all doing this. It's forcing us to NOT eat cause we have no choice!!!! And choice is what got us into this mess.
Relax, you'll be fine. The Docs are used to it and can handle tons worse. Keep your head on the goal......The skinnier you.

Makemyownluck - thank you for the encouraging words. I'll keep you in my thoughts on Thursday.

Thank you, Momonanomo. Though not what I want to hear your words are true. I did talk with the Dr. when I went in for my pre-op blood work last week. He considers me a "light weight" and said he isn't concerned about the liver being in the way or being too large. I'm just worried if I couldn't do it pre-op how much will I struggle post op?

Just to let you know, I am a hugger and since I cant physically do so I wanted to verbally send a squeeze to this forum.
I was led here by my sister who was researching information for me about the sleeve and the effects of having children after you have it..I have never left!
I got my sleeve on 4/24 and I havent looked back thanks to this forum and the tremendous wealth of information.
I have to be a sleever in secret, only telling a few people who I can trust. I have created a cover, using my pre-op diet as my new trend to see how people respond to an extreme method and socially how my friends would respond to me.
I was saddened to see how a few of my friends acted, acting as if I was too good for them. A few have created a narrative that I know will carry over when I see them again of "she stopped eating,I am so worried" to "yeah she looks good but look how she got there" it has affirmed that I made the right decision.
I have met some amazing people already and I am inspired by your journey, your struggles. Even your occasional disagreements bring me to new found awareness! Thank you for being so open and willing to share this difficult, deeply personal time with all of us.
    I appreciate you!

Hi everyone, my surgery is this Friday, May 3. I am both excited and terrified. I haven't made it through one day of the pre-op diet successfully. I have cheated and I mean REALLY cheated every single day. In fact when I began this process my weight was 220 lbs six months later and four days before surgery I am now 245 lbs - this is my all time highest weight. What is wrong with me?!

Hello! My surgeon wasn't particuarly concerned with the pre op diet. As long as I wasn't binge eating he was ok with it. Nutrition gave me a diet for 2 weeks of 800-1000 calories a day, which was impossible for me ( I would easily pass out trying to do that ). The biggest concern is your liver. If it is too large they can cut it trying to get to your stomach. My doctor said he can get around it, but it's just going to hurt me more. I had a friend that ate at a endless meat brazilian grill the night before her surgery and still had her surgery the next day. So if anything, just try to cut down a little more every day. At least a little is better than nothing at all!

Post op is a whole other ball of wax, my dear. Even if you don't eat exactly what you're supposed to, you won't be able to eat AS MUCH of it, so it will still help you. Also, for many, the desire to eat is gone post op. I'm hoping that's true for me!!

    Kelly!
Have you been following me around and watching me! i am in the SAME EXACT BOAT AS YOU! first and foremost we are sleeve sisters! i go in on Friday as well and i too have cheated almost everyday!. The first few days were terrible! to compensate for my terrible eating i've been drinking a ton of Water and i mean liters upon liters. I told myself i wouldn't eat until the surgery so starting today i had everything Protein ( 2 shakes and 2 Protein bars( i know i probably shouldn't have eaten that but i NEEDED to chew something.. anything)) and it wasn't as bad today.
I finished the box of Protein Bars so for the next three days i will have 3- 4 Protein Shakes a day and will try to consume about 3.5liters of Water. I'm praying to God this helps because i'm going to Mexico for my surgery and i would hate to have to reschedule or they do do the surgery and it doesn't go as smoothly because of my stickin' mouth!
Kelly WE CAN DO THIS! i will be praying for and keeping you in my thoughts for Friday. Don't give up, it ain't over just yet!

I'm sorry you've been struggling. It's definitely an adjustment, the first few days were tough on me. I've managed to get through it without cheating so far - surgery is on Thursday - but I can totally relate to the struggle. I agree you should probably talk to your surgeon about it, the last thing you'd want is for him to get in there and realize he can't complete the surgery - all the incisions w/o the actual surgery being completed would be a bigger disappointment than your doctor putting off surgery for a week so you can get the diet together...
Good luck to you! Tomorrow is another day!

Oh thank you! I was beginning to think that I'm hopeless. I'm so happy for so many who have beenable to lose weight in the pre-op phase ... I wish I could be one of them but that just isn't my reality! Yes, here's to tomorrow. Good luck to you also!
