Ok peeps ... tomorrow I will be part of the post-op club!
I am both excited and nervous - but I am not worried about regrets. This is the right time and the right decision for me. After 9 months of prep, working with a nutritionist, and forming a solid exercise routine, I am confident this is the tool I need to guide me on my journey (indeed I am aware that this is only one of many tools to assist us on our on way).
So, yes, I have struggled (greatly) with a two week liquid only pre-op diet - I appreciate knowing that I am not the only one to do so! The stories of others who were (are) in a similar position to mine and have gone through the surgery and have shared their experiences are exactly what I needed. Thanks everyone!

In all honesty what is disheartening is how some on the boards make it seem so easy to follow the pre-op diet. If I were able to successfully follow a diet, I wouldn't need this surgery. And neither would you. While I appreciate all of the insight I do think lines are crossed when making such harsh judgments and declaring someone is not ready for surgery based on one post. I think it's important that we keep ourselves in check and not assume an authoritative, expert role.

Kellylynn, I wish you the best on your journey. I agree you need to let your surgeon know about your eating habits. I had a long fight with my insurance company and had some time to deal with my food issues. I went to a therapist weekly to come to terms with my feelings about having surgery, and how my life would change. It worked for me but may not be for everyone. Once I knew my surgery date, I used those 6 weeks to follow a modified post-op diet. I took my stance from my experience with two people who had surgery ( I know a total of 5) and failed because they could not stick to the plan. Maybe that is not you and hopefully you won't become one of the wls failures. I know we have all had issues with food. Whether it is because we have a sweet tooth, snack or eat constantly, or just eat too much food at a sitting. I am fairly new at 10 weeks post-op, but in the time leading up to my surgery and the time after, I have not cheated or have a desire to do so. I want all of us to succeed so much that I get passionate in my responses. This forum is one where you will get honesty, and tough love. You may or may not like or agree with what we say but it is meant to come from a good space. None or most of us know each other personally but we think of each other as part of our extended surgery and want to offer advice.
It is up to you to determine which is most helpful to you.
Good luck on your new lifelong journey to be thin.

Nicolanz! Well, I really am taking it one hour at a time. I did great yesterday - stuck to the plan - nothing but Protein shakes - though I forgot about the Water. Today I've had a ton of Water and a cup of broth. Hopefully the rest of the day will go just as well.
    How are you?

I'd be quite worried, the reason that they get you to go on a pre-op diet is to reduce the fat around your internal organs. If they are too fatty it makes the surgery riskier and they may need to switch from laparoscopic to an open incision.
Also there is no cheating once you have had the surgery or you could do some serious damage and create a hole in your stomach.
This is your health you need to be honest with your doctor and let him / her know exactly what is happening with your food intake.
Best of luck in your journey.

I think people are coming from a good place, but nobody knows you well enough or is certified to tell you what you are or are not ready for. I ate a complete monsterous pig pre op with several food funerals but am doing great post op. People probably would have said I wasn't ready either but here I am 6 months out 73 pounds down with not one single regret! It sounds like you've spent a lot of time preparing for this. I've got faith in you!

My surgeon has NO requirements for a pre-op diet. None. All I have to do is not eat solids after midnight the night prior to the procedure. Don't beat yourself up, Kelly--after all, listening to the judging/angry/"you're-not-worthy" voices in our heads is WHY some of us are in the predicament we're in.
I don't know about anyone else, but a lot of my eating is self-medication against negativity. Cheering myself up with yummy Snacks. Eating to avoid dealing with my emotions, then feeling rotten about what I ate, giving up on myself--since it MUST be all-or-nothing to succeed, right?--and starting the vicious cycle all over again.
Eat poorly, hate what I did to my body by eating poorly, punish myself with a mental lecture about being worthless, do a 180 and say "SCREW THIS IMMA EAT WHAT I WANT", eat poorly again. Lather, rinse, repeat.
(Of course, the whole process above doesn't WORK and it doesn't make logical sense to stay in that cycle, but that never stopped an alcoholic from looking for answers at the bottom of a bottle of whisky. I preferred to search my way to both ends of a brownie pan or a bag of peanut M&M's.)
So, yeah. Don't add your voice or anyone else's to the negative chorus of "this will not work for you if you can't stick to liquids". Right now, it's optional. For a lot of obese people with food addictions, all the good intentions in the world just won't get the job done when it's optional. We make excuses, we sabotage ourselves, we make bad food choices. It's what we DO. It's why we're choosing to be sleeved--to take the choice out of our hands (and stomachs).
You're gonna be okay. You CAN do this. Your sleeve is going to make it possible, and you're going to be a success. Hang tough, girlie.

Hmmm ... are you a success or failure ...
I can't speak for you, but I know I am neither ... I am human. An imperfect one, at that.
I am an alcoholic who has found others who have found a solution to their issues with alcohol abuse. It is a 12 step program you may have heard of. If not, Google 12 step alcohol. There are many meetings in cities around the world every hour of the day.
I found shame in admitting it at first, but after some time, similar to being sleeved, I have found that I can be of service to those in need, trying to reach out to others. I would love to discuss this further with you, if you are so inclined, but I cannot do this for you. No one here can tell you why you abuse alcohol just like no one here can tell you why you were obese. But I, and many others in your own city, can tell you what my issues were and how I found a solution which may work for you, if you are willing.
You may or may not be an alcoholic. Only you get to decide. I've known more than one person who could suck down a bottle of vodka, but wasn't an alcoholic. But I do know, for myself, I stepped over the line when I lost my power of choice in the matter.
Feel free to PM me, though, I think you may have already before ... right?
The only shame is not doing anything about it.

I'm sorry you are struggling with an alcohol problem sweetie but you shouldn't have to hide who you are for fear of judgement. If "we" judge you than you shouldn't take advice from us anyways. I understand being embarrassed or feeling like you failed but YOU ARE NOT A FAILURE. Consuming that much alcohol that often is very dangerous. Part of the reason we all get surgery is because we want to be healthy. It's not worth it love to get surgery and lose all that weight if you are just going to pick up something else that's just as dangerous. I think if you went to therapy it would really help you, quite frankly I think the whole world needs therapy lol. But the reason I say therapy is because maybe there is an underlying issue that you aren't even aware of. I'm going to school to be a drug and alcohol counselor so I'm actually learning about all this. If you ever need to talk you can private message me and I WILL NOT judge you. Sometimes people don't even know what's bothering them or drawing them to have an addiction until they start talking to someone they can trust and then it all spills out.

I've been working towards my surgery date for the past nine months. I've taken the classes, meet weekly with the nutritionist, started exercising (zumba – love it!), the complete check list, and yes, I am struggling with the two-week pre-op diet. The reality is I have struggled with diets my entire life – up and down, over and over.
I think it is terrific, pnkhart, that you have been so successful on your pre-op diet – and there have been many who have celebrated this pre-op success … I’m just not one among you.
Fixerupper – thank you for “fixerupping” my courage by reminding me that I am not, indeed, doomed. I have a lot of work to do – but I can do it and I am not doomed, and the time is right, for me.
One hour at a time ….
