I know they say that you shouldn't get pregnant for something like 2 years after weight loss surgery, because it's harder to get the nutrition that both you and the baby need. At age 46 and overweight, your pregnancy would be high-risk to begin with, I would think the nutrition issues might make it even more difficult.
At 5'8", I had my first child at age 30, and weighed 295 when I got pregnant. I developed gestational diabetes, but didn't have any other complications and carried 1 week past due date. I gained about 36 lbs with the pregnancy. My son was healthy and 8 lbs 12 oz. I had my second child at 37, after I had been diagnosed with type II diabetes. I weighed over 350 lbs when I got pregnant with her. They immediately put me on insulin, which I had to take 4 times a day, to keep my blood sugar under control during the pregnancy. I actually lost weight during the pregnancy. I had no difficulties until 3 1/2 weeks before the due date, when my amniotic Fluid suddenly dropped, so they decided to go ahead and deliver. Two attempts at induction failed, so I had a C-section, but my daughter was perfectly healthy and 6 lbs 9 oz.
I would have a serious talk with both your OB-GYN and your Gastroenterologist about this. I don't think I'd want to take both things on at once, and waiting to try for children at this point could mean too late.

ART or IVF is very hard on your body and not something you can do while on a highly restrictive diet, not to mention while recovering from surgery. Getting your hormone levels straight alone would be impossible, making the ART a total waste of money.
At 46 your chances of success are not great...you likely know this, but if you are to be successful time is of the essence. Each year your chances go down exponentially. If you want to get pregnant you must do that first. You couldn't even take the meds necessary for ART or IVF after surgery. It's really a no brainer (ok for me cuz I've done both). You have no option but to do the ART first then when you are either successful or you chose to quit trying you can move to VSG.
in the mean time you can look to trying a six month weight loss period or diet. That you can do easily while also doing ART.
I wish you the best. I know that both are hard roads to travel.

Also, I should add, I was younger, 26 and 28, but I delayed revision surgery and carried both my children with a BMI of 48+ and comorbidies. I wanted to start my family and decided that would come first. My pregnancies were not "easy" but they were healthy.

It sounds like your reality is that you CAN'T do both. If I'm not mistaken. If that is not an option and you really want children, it sounds like you may have to do the fertility treatments while you can and put off the VSG for a few years. It is in no way ideal, but one is limited by time and the other can be successful no matter when you do it. Best of luck!

I attribute the weight loss I achieved when I was banded at the age of 35 with the conception and birth of my two little girls born when I was 37 and 39! I had been trying for years prior to the banding to get pregnant. The weight loss made me fertile again and it just might do the same for you!! I wish you luck with your efforts to have children! My girls mean way more to me than being thin did!!!
Unfortunately I gained all my weight back with these pregnancies and could never get the band to work again for me which is why I am here now!! I am bummed about gaining all my weight back but I so do not regret having my little girls!! But now here I go again Getting sleeved at the end of this month. Hopefully to lose this weight for the LAST time!!!

I am in the same boat but a little younger. I chose to get sleeved first just because I am in my late 30's and might get pregnant when I loose the weight. We have been trying for 6 years.
If this doesn't help us I am going to start treatments in 2 years.

You have plenty of time to do the surgery, but your window is quickly closing for the fertility treatments. I would do the treatments first!

Why can't you try both? Start the medicine now, gain weight, if you don't conceive then do this...if you do conceive do this after you have your baby.

I was just getting around after my 9 am surgery. The minute I woke up, I thought (and said out loud) what in the heck did I just do to myself? I was in so much pain and so so thirsty. A friend had told me - even if you don't feel like it - get up and walk. That's what I did, almost non stop. I was ready to feel better and go home. Each day got easier and easier, I tracked everything I put in my mouth. Everything. It made me feel like I had some control over what I was going through.
Over time I started getting compliments, you look great or wow you've lost some weight. I look back now and yes, I had lost weight. What I think was so noticeable though was I was smiling - a lot. I didn't ever see my self as unhappy pre-surgery, but I was. I can admit it now. How could I not be? Who is happy with themselves at 368 pounds??
Today I still believe - 1 year later that I made the absolute best decision of my life. Not because I can shop at any store (but I can and its fun!!!) or that I don't have to worry about how the chairs will be wherever I go. It's because I feel great and I'm healthy. I'm happy and I am becoming the person I've always wanted to be. I wouldn't change a thing.

Had the EGD and it showed chronic gastritis and peptic esophagitis both from acid reflux damage, also a hital hernia adding to reflux. It can be repaired when I have the sleeve. But it's good they want o see inside your system BEFORE surgery so there are no surprises during surgery. Think of it as a safety procedure.

I'm new to the forum here and just wanted to introduce myself. I'm 10 months after surgery and truly loving life. I began my journey needing to drop 98 lbs. I am down 88 lbs post surgery, not having to do any kind of pre surgery diet, so all has been lost since May 1st 2012.
I can't tell you how wonderful the experience has been. I've been very blessed in not having any complications and no problems with any foods or hunger. This has given me a real sense of FREEDOM from all things food, for the first time in my 54 years of life.
As I am reaching my personal goal weight, I thank God each day and can't wait for all the future holds.

Broccoli, even cooked in a Soup may still be too much of a challenge for your stomach and disgestive system to conquer! No to mention if you were enjoying the soup that much (and I don't blame you, broccolli-cheddar is great!), you may have eaten more than your stomach could handle.
Even though you are on Stage 3 foods, you stomach is still VERY raw and swollen my dear. The VSG is a major insult to our stomach, and the healing process is long! Even if you're not feeling it, the inside is still very tender and you have to treat it very gently.
I'm sorry you had such a painful experience. I'm sure you'll be more careful in the future. But take heart, it does get better. I'm nearly 9 months post-op and there is very little I can't eat now, as long as I eat slowly, chew well and follow "the rules". I was fond of spicy foods pre-op which I've given up because it's not worth the pain. And of course, very little soda now (and usually all stirred up so it's basically flat. Only diet, of course, and usually not more than 1/month).
This transition period will go by quickly, you'll see. In a few months you will barely remember it!
Keep up the good work and pay close attention to how your body is responding. You biggest challenge is overcoming your brain telling you it's okay to eat "that much", or "that fast" etc. Surgery was on our stomach, but our real enemy is our brain, and WE have to do the work on that part!

Everyone will have a different answer for that. Those with higher start weights lose more faster than those with lower start weights. The best you can do is stick with what you're supposed to be doing and realize that we're in a marathon, not a sprint

*grins* It is nice to get that feeling. Just be prepared, mentally, for some of the things that are coming. You will stall, you'll fight cravings, you'll occasionally do the wrong thing. There will be a lot of times when you just want to be DONE ALREADY (*cough* I'm bad about that one). When you have those times, just keep focused on what you're learning now, because those habits are going to carry you through to your goals
