msemma got a reaction from Blessedfun in Anyone been sleeved with rheumatoid arthritis
I don't have RA but I have lupus another autoimmune disorder. Had surgery in Oct 12 I've been off my lupus meds since. My labs have been normal and lesser episodes of joint pain.. surgery or should I say weight loss helped control my lupus best thing I ever did..

Same way you dealt with it before. For me if married and in a relationship it is hands off. Besides I am and continue to be the same person so if you are now just going to pay attention to me because I lost some weight, then forget you...you should have gotten to know me before.

msemma reacted to arathfon.rn in UPDATE ON OCTOBER SLEEVERS WHERE ARE YOU
Hw 278, dos 271, cw 215. I so far have had no issues. Down 56 lbs. stalled occasionally but generally come out of it in a week or two. Exercising since 4 weeks post op. elliptical, just dance 3&4, and Zumba 5-6 days a week for an hour. Only regret is that I wish i would have done this years ago. I know 56lbs is a huge amount of weight but I'm still waiting for my head to see it. Sometimes I look in the mirror and still see the 271lb me and think geez. Other days its like wow...what a difference. I'm ready for the next 15lbs to get off my body. Reaching a weight that beings with 1 is something I have not had since high school. This will be a huge sense of accomplishment.

msemma reacted to gmanbat in How I keep from over eating!
I will post something I found on another forum:
Part of what gives us that "full feeling" after we eat is the effect that stretching has on the stomach. Stretch receptors in the lower part of the stomach antrum signal the brain as the stomach fills up. With the sleeve food is essentially funneled to the antrum receptors which signal fullness much sooner than they normally would. The stomach is size restricted and that means that the antrum signals fullness at the slightest filling. The stomach we have left minus the fundus is essentially muscle and being muscle it has a limited expanding capacity. Over time the stomach will stretch some, but never get back to pre-surgery size. That being said here is a statistical study I found:
A team of surgeons at the University of Chile, led by Dr. Italo Braghetto, have conducted measurements of stomach capacity with patients who have undergone sleeve gastrectomies, checking their stomach capacity within three days of their surgery and again after two years.
This study, reported in the journal Obesity Surgery in January 2009, followed fifteen patients and found that the average stomach capacity did increase significantly over the two years after their surgeries. In fact, the average gastric capacity had more than doubled. These same patients had, for the most part, maintained their weight loss and had average Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25 (although an increase in BMI was seen in a few patients).
The stomach's studied expanded to over double their size which would max out at maybe, 6 to 10 ounces (estimating that your sleeve holds 2 to 4 oz at surgery). Well a normal stomach holds on average 1 liter, which is over 33 ounces and can expand to 4 liters, which is over 132 ounces or roughly 8 lb of solid food. How many sleevers do you know that can eat even a pound of solid food? So even if your sleeve stretched like crazy it is still going to be way smaller, at least 3 times smaller than the average person's stomach.
Also, understand that they checked the stomach's capacity after only 3 days after surgery. We know that the stomach is swollen at that time and has less capacity. So the stretching ratio would be less.

msemma reacted to hm734 in help me understand why get a sleeve at 180?
The better question would be why wait till you are 220...230..250...300lbs?
Despite some peoples best efforts, the scale may go down, but always creeps much higher in the long run. An average of 10 lbs a year gain, for me, on what seemed like a lifelong diet - for what?
Pre-diabetes, heart disease, high chloresteral, high blood pressure, back problems, knee problems, PCOS and a miserable life in general? I WISH I would have considered this surgery at 180. I was too busy kidding myself that I could somehow lose 50+ pounds on my own and keep it off.
I finally decided to have my surgery somewhere between 213-218. Now, almost 6 months later I am 139 lbs, 5' 4" and for the first time ever I am HEALTHY, confident, happy and content.
That is why. I see you started at 340 pounds. I would have been dead by the time I reached that weight. I make no mistake about it. My weight was slowly killing me. Let me ask you something. Are you happy you started this journey at 340, or would you have preferred to start at 180? Because you were 180 at some point. You just kept going and going and going, as we "low BMI'rs (read still Morbidy OBESE) decided to fix the problem before it got even more out of control, we should somehow feel guilty? Yeah...no.
