tigerbelle got a reaction from Wags in two month follow up today
today was my 2 month follow up with my surgeon...it was supposed to be two weeks ago, but his office had to reschedule...therefore, I guess it's my 2 month + 2 week follow up here are a few things that surprised and/or intrigued me
--I was concerned that I had only lost 34 pounds, but he seemed pleased with that...he had never given me any kind of goal weight or expected weight loss, so I asked him about that--he told me that he doesn't set goals for his patients and that he just goes with a goal of obtaining a weight you feel comfortable and healthy at...that wasn't the answer I expected
--I expressed concern that I wasn't getting enough fluids in; i.e., the 64 oz minimum my NUT suggested...he said that he thought that was too high of a goal and that I would be fine getting in 48 oz...that will still be difficult for me
--as for Protein, I told him some days I had problems getting in the minimum 60 g my NUT recommended...again, he said that was too high of a goal and that I would be fine getting in 50 g...as for daily calorie intake, I told him I was averaging 800, and he thought that sounded on the high end for me at two months out--he was suggesting more like 500 to 600
--I haven't started losing any hair yet, but he said most of his patients think that their Hair loss is caused by Vitamin deficiency, and he thinks it is caused more by a lack of fat intake when dieting--not the "bad" fat but the "good" type of fat...he briefly explained the role these good fats played and how a lack of them could lead to hair loss...the whole reason he even brought this up is that I had told him that sometimes my snack is a couple of tablespoons of Peanut Butter, which has about 190 calories--he thought that peanut butter was a beneficial snack because it contained the necessary "good" type of fat
--he asked me what my hunger level was like and I told him I still sometimes experienced true hunger...I had already told him that I have been able to successfully exclude all starches (bread, Pasta, rice, potatoes, corn, crackers, Cereal, sweets, etc) from my diet...and he was genuinely puzzled at how I could be experiencing hunger and despite that still not eat the carbs and have been able to lose what he thinks is an impressive weight loss so far...he said I must be truly motivated, so that made me feel good
--finally, when I was telling him that the main thing I missed (maybe more than I missed carbs) was my Diet Coke, he actually said he saw no problem with my drinking carbonated beverages as long as they didn't cause me discomfort (they make some people burp)...I asked him about the carbonation damaging or expanding the sleeve, and he said there is no plausible evidence whatsoever that this is possible...he is one of the most well-respected and experienced bariatric surgeons in my area, so I feel like he knows what he's talking about...and that just surprised me based on everything I seem to read and hear
thanks for listening to my little report and some of my surprising findings

tigerbelle reacted to Changing B4YourEyes in I HAVE COME FULL CIRCLE! I HAVE EVLOVED!
Good Morning Everyone.. I wanted to share a post with you. I have two Facebook accounts, of course 1 for my WLS and my everybody account!! I posted this on my Everybody account last night.. Yesterday I turned a year older!!! This is a new year, new, plans, new goals, and I’m living in the new me. I have come FULL CIRCLE and I am Free!!! This post is long but Have a Wonderful Hump Day!!!!

Hi Every...one!!!! So again I will say a lot of folks wont see or read this and I'm ok with that.. I wanted to let you all know that earlier this year I made a very profound statement on my Facebook page about myself, here is another one.. 1 year ago Yesterday 7/16/13. I made a decision that would change my life forever.. A lot of you know that I had been sick for a long time, it had gotten to a point that I thought Slick would find me dead lying next to him. My sickness had gotten that bad. Although I had a few people that would check on me and Slick during that time, the support needed was not there by many.. Anyway, during March of last year when I was finally diagnosed with my illness, I also decided to have weight loss surgery. I started telling people that I thought would be in my corner and stand by my side but instead was slapped in the face person after person when I would tell them even family members. I had phones hung up in my face, people stopped calling, others would say why when you can lose the weight on your own.. If you had seen me and or if you knew that I was very sick you would have know that it was out of my own hands to do it alone. You would also know that for years I had been trying very hard to lose the weight on my own. I had been on bed rest for months!!!! I was very offended by all of the negative responses that I was receiving from friends and family that I completely shut down. I stopped telling people.. I told less than 6 people... Folks was more concerned about me not losing weight on my own than they were that I could barely move, breath, or take care of myself and was near deaf. It was Just me and Slick!!! On 7/16/13... I had weight loss surgery!! I also lost a lot of friends and family along the way.. I slowly started posting pics here and there and when someone would ask me how did you loss or how are you losing weight, I would say, "high Protein, low carb, no sodas, no sweets, no alcohol, etc..." these were and are still all true but I left out the weight loss surgery part... I am at a place in my life now that as I said in my previous profound post, you can either be on my bus or not.. But I didn't do this for Vanity reasons, If you really knew me, you would know I did it to live.. I have a 2 year old Granddaughter that I could not play with, a family that I could not hang out with.. a husband that I could not take care of.. I Can do all those things now and so much More... I'm living NOW!!! I am Very Happy, I have lots of Energy!! I'm Stronger than before!!! I'm 122lbs lighter!!! I work out 5-7 days a week, I have done several 5k's and I'm running when I was told that I would NEVER run again. I have told quite a few people since and I felt that it was time for me to let you all know.. I did this for me and my Family no one else.. It was time to put me 1st.. For years I have taken care of others and I was the one dying.. I'm loving and living life at the age of 40!!! and Next April I will be running my 1st Half Marathon!!! I am ALIVE!!! and I LOVE ME!!

I understand...it is true that the experiences vary widely for different people--even what you can eat or tolerate so many weeks or months out...what you are doing now is the best path I think; i.e., meeting with the drs and discussing your concerns...consulting with your husband (I didn't have that support since I am single), and researching and asking questions...hope all goes well with your dr visits

I didn't have any problem swallowing- my throat was sore from being intubated, and my mouth was SO dry, but once I was allowed to start sipping Water, I had no problem swallowing, I just had to go slow because my stomach was so swollen and they did not want me to throw up, which I didn't, but some people struggle with nausea and vomiting after surgery due to the anesthesia.

I had recently divorced and lost a lot of weight when I started dating my (now) husband and told him so. I warned him I may gain weight and he assured me it was more acreage to love. 18 years later and he has continued to tell me I am sexy at every up and down of the scale.
It alway made me feel reassured that he knew and accepted me as I am at any size.

I also wanted you to know that she said my surgeon has a very reasonable goal for his VGS patients of 50 lbs lost in five months. Most of you (and I) are on track for meeting that goal. Feeling very encouraged even though losing more slowly that some of you! Have a blessed weekend my soon-to-be skinny friends!

I would like to share with all you marvelous May sleevers some encouraging information from my nut. She painted a great picture for me by saying, "Weight loss with the sleeve is like going down a flight of stairs. You land on a step and stay there for a period of time (a few days or a couple of weeks) with no weight loss and then you move down to the next stair (2-3 lbs lost in a week), then you stay on that step for a few days before moving down to the next step." This image is a perfect description of my journey of weight loss so far. And it appears to capture a lot of others' experience, as well. She also gave me the following nutritional goals saying that it is difficult to get more Protein in when only eating 1/2 - 2/3 cup of food (normal for my stage at 10 weeks out). She prefers that the majority of protein come from food, at this point, with Protein Shakes filling in gaps throughout the week. Calories: <1000 Fat: 30 max Carbohydrates: 30-50 (excluding vegetables) Protein: 40-50 (eventually 70-80) Sodium, Na: no recommendation Fiber, total dietary: 25-35 (eventually)

I know when you see others that get released to food early, either through their doctors or because they just want to, is hard to see
