Ted talks; Sam Berns
Sam Berns talks about his philosophy of life...We as WLS patients can apply his message to ourselves and consider his message for our own journey's. Some of the things he said rang true for me and I will digest some of his ideas and try to incorporate them in my life. Sam passed away a few weeks ago. But his words ring true to anyone who wants to have a positive view of life and in our case, our journey! enjoy

I have gained 14 lbs in 4 days! MAGIC (FML)
Do you have any idea how much poison goes into your body when you have surgery. The body reacts to protect itself from these invaders esp. your kidneys and liver. it takes a lot of time for that stuff to leave your body. Diluting it with Water is a great help. You don't need to get mad you need to be patient. It is part of the journey...the beginning. Be glad your system is working to protect itself. That means all is good! I was told that it is impossible for someone who has had this surgery to not lose weight. You are now geared to lose weight.... Get rid of that scale...It plays with the mind!!!!!!! The only things scales are for are fish! weighing once every 2 weeks is plenty......K

Fear of Failure
This is not another failed diet....glad i got that out. This is a journey that you will be taking to learn who you really are and what caused you to become heavier. This is a journey because it will take place through your entire life...There is no failure!! There is however fear, worry, gains, losses, proud moment, happiness, pride, confusion, one step back and two steps forward. Figuring out the unknowns and really finally figuring out how to fix your brain. It is quite the trip let me tell you... In the back of every ones heads we have the fear of failing!!!!!!!!! It is a history of conduct that we are used to in weight control issues...the sleeve will give you an edge to find out how you think about some things and really get to know who you are..... It is all very rewarding...I had my surgery 15 months ago and I am not the same person who had this surgery....I am finding out who I really am and that is great...she is not so bad you know! I think about the beginning of my journey and I smile because it was my turn to repair the damage. It was my turn to do this to better my health. It was now me that was going to feel the same things as everyone else on this forum. Stay close and keep positive but never let your guard down.....You are going to do this because you are not sure you will so you know you will have to work for it...Nothing is worth having unless we work for it....K

http://www.buzzle.com/articles/complex-carbohydrate-examples.html This is a site that introduces you to the best complex carbs for your body. Complete Protein explanation here: If you take a trip back to your old science class, you might remember that protein is made up of smaller components called amino acids, 12 of which are manufactured by the human body. Another nine, called essential amino acids, must be obtained from food. A complete protein is a protein that contains all of the essential amino acids. Animal Proteins are complete, including red meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, and dairy, so what's a vegetarian or vegan to do? There are a few nonanimal sources that offer complete proteins, so it's important to get your fill of soybeans, blue green algae, hempseed, buckwheat, and quinoa if you're diet is meat-, milk-, or egg-free. Then there are foods known as incomplete proteins, including Beans, whole grains, nuts, seeds, peas, and corn. Combine two or more incomplete proteins and boom — you've got a complete protein. Enjoy them together in one meal or the combination can be consumed over the same day, such as black bean Soup for lunch and brown rice with dinner. Here are some other food combinations that work: Beans with whole grains: hummus (contains chickpeas and tahini, which is made from sesame seeds) and pita bread, red beans and rice, chickpea and quinoa veggie burgerson a whole-wheat bun, split pea soup with whole-grain bread, lentil barley soup, black beans and polenta, and tortillas with refried beans Nuts or seeds with whole grains: sunflower seed butter on crackers, almond butter on toast, peanut noodles Beans with seeds or nuts: hummus, salad topped with sunflower seeds and chickpeas Like I said I made a Protein Bar with Protein powder and hemp, chia seeds, flax seeds, walnuts, dried cherries and coconut. Base was prune juice. Together they make a complex protein because you have simple carbs and protein together so it becomes a complete protein.. He encouraged me to eat more of this type of food before a workout.....So today I ate a 1/2 of a bar I made and it worked....So when I work out I will eat one of them 30 min. before I start my sets.... hope this helps:

Start Over
I read this poem yesterday and then when I sent it to my daughter she told me that she read on a diet site that if you get tired of starting over to quit stopping!!!! LOL Start OverIf you have started out in pursuit of your goal And you have really tried with your heart and your soul, But somehow things got out of control START OVER. When you have tried your best to do what you should And you thought this time that you surely would, But once again, you did not do good START OVER. When you have worked so hard to follow a dieters way And you fought to win a victory each day. But one more time you went astray START OVER. When you have tried so hard to yourself to be true And do the things that you know you should do, But once again you failed to come through START OVER. When the road to success seemed much too long And each temptation was oh so strong And once again you gave in to wrong START OVER. When you have told your friends what you planned to do And trusted them to help you through But soon discovered it is up to you START OVER. When you know you must be physically fit, But your hope seems gone and you are stuck in a pit That is not the time for you to quit START OVER. When the week seems long and successes few And at weigh in time you are feeling blue, Remember tomorrow is just for you START OVER. To start again means a victory is been won And starting over again means a race well run And starting over again proves it can be done So do not just sit there START OVER. Author Unknown

Encouragement needed preop diet blues
Day 5 was my worst day...I thought I was going to take someones head off...I did the pre-op twice and so therefore had a test drive....ugg You can do this. Think about the goals you are developing in your head. How you want to look and why you are doing this. Keep that close to your mind and you will make it.....Just keep swimming..K

Wondering
You are about to get a variety of answers concerning this post....Me personally, I have never counted one calorie yet. I do however look at the back of the box and try to gauge from there how much I am eating... I was never told to count. Like you Protein first and and veggies, fruit and carbs. 60 g protein and 60 oz of Water. I try to do more of both of those..Not always on target.....

I'll be perfectly honest. I have never counted one calorie in 15 months. I was just told that I had to increase COMPLEX carbs...Not just carbs. Complex makes a complete protein but is needed for the building up of muscle. Takes more calories to build muscle then fat..... This man specializes in people like me with special needs...i am grateful to have him..He works my butt off but he also knows what I feel like because he had to work from the ground up himself.... My nut and Doctor and trainer, Chiropractor and Osteopath are all in the same mind about my journey and what needs to be done next.... I was really thinking about peoples comments in the past and now others say the opposite.....

snide remarks
This has nothing really to do with her. This is you looking out for yourself and your health. I am proud of you! Don't let them get to you...It always seems to feel better when you are struggling with your weight to have someone who makes you feel safe. She is so going to lose that safety net she had in you... And good riddens I say..All the best kid!

someone sew my mouth shut!
You have done so well so far....Something pushed you over. and just because it did does not mean that you can't start right now to eat properly again...that is the cool thing about this being an adventure or journey..It does not depend on you never making a mistake or having issues. It is about fixing your mind. Taking the time to find out why..So ask yourself why you ate so much that you threw up yesterday..I know you know the reason.... Step back kid and breath. And then think about it and make a change..that is what this journey is all about too!

My trainer gave me a lecture today on the amount of food I eat. He said that when we have a session I lose between 400-600 calories and have to up my intake of food so that my blood sugar does not dive. He suggested complex carbs. So today I ate a Protein bar all made with fresh fruit, hemp, Chia, flax, Protein powder dried fruit and nuts. This is the first time i did not crave sugar after a workout or feel depleted of energy. The hour went by so fast and I was ready to do more... Could he be on to something... One day you wake up and people are telling you you need to lose weight..Then people tell you you need to stop losing weight... One day they say you eat to much and then you eat to little... sometimes I just have to give my head a shake because I can't believe that someone told me I have to consume more calories....Me....imagine!!! Have others been this confused too... I went to my writing class the other night and watched as everyone was milling around and realized that I am one of the smallest people in the class... I was always the biggest hands down...Everyone seems happy and not self conscious at all. They don't even know I was morbidly obese ( I hate that word ). so they would never understand what I have done or what I have accomplished. I am just another person in a class with a bunch of people taking a course......unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!

Stomach/Waistline getting bigger
Your body weight shifts as well. Woman tend to carry it more in the waist...carrying babies and all. And it is harder to lose it there. i have a spare tire there myself....I hate it!

Gluttonous PIG!
That does not make you a glutenous pig. Your sleeve is starting to work right. You need to separate head hunger from real hunger... It is amazing what our eyes can tell our brains which sends a signal to your stomach.....Feel it out. you will find for now you are getting enough...soon you will know what is really head hunger because it will happen to you like it has happened to most all of us...Then the real work begins.

Super afraid of a leak! No symptoms, just paranoid of the risk.
Being one of those people who had a leak...i suggest that you keep doing what your surgeon tells you to do....It will all work out. but your right..Having a leak is a nightmare. Don't worry about it until it happens okay!

Newbie w/ a question! :)
The only shake I have ever drank is Premier shakes...I assume that they all taste awful so i went to Protein juice from Blissful Wellness. I like them and they don't come back up...15 gms of protein....they aren't bad.....I also add premier to hot chocolate and it is working as well. It has cut down on some of the gagging reflex.... But I am post so I require less..... Oh and welcome to the forum

Head hunger
You might want to incorporate a healthy small snack into your routine at those times...I have one in the evening as part of my daily routine...I eat a small amount of nuts and seeds and it gives me that crunch too...if i don't eat in the evening I wake up in the night..So it is part of me now I think.

MiniMizer Ring with Sleeve
I have never heard of it before...But came across these questions that you need to ask before you agree to it: how many have they fitted and to what success rate? how long has this been used? and has it been used on virgin sleevers? or stretched sleeves? on what basis does he know it doesn't cause scarring...what about weakening of the oesophageal sphincter? does it cause that? what if it is too tight? what then? what about slips and erosion? how would it affect post op recovery? because your sleeved tummy is literally the size of an egg cup due to swelling, wouldn't this make it worse and more difficult to drink and eat particularly post op? Given that stress and anxiety can cause a lap band to become tighter, what effect does this device have on a smaller sleeved stomach?
