I'm totally new here, was set on the band until Tuesday when the doc said sleeve. So I dove in and read about the sleeve and found the before and after pics thread. Everyone of you are amazing! Can this even be real that I too can be healthy again, and perhaps love myself?

The 40% typical success rate is because many patients start to relax on the rules and start to become "sugar drinkers" eating ice cream and milkshakes for meals because they go down easily and they don't cause restriction effects. You have a low BMI in my opinion for this procedure (minimum is around 40 to qualify, 35 with co-morbidities). Statistically, maybe it doesn't seem to be your best option, but only you can make that decision. Good luck =)

I had a 12 level spinal fusion (T2 to L3) 3 years ago, and got the band just over 2 weeks ago. I walk at least 60 minutes every day and have lost 19.5 lbs so far. I'm encouraged to exercise because it helps manage my back pain - the stronger your muscles are, the less they hurt in my experience. I'd get a second opinion if you feel the band is right for you.

I call bullsh*t on that. I have severe arthritis in both knees and hips. The only exercise I do is swim or dogpaddle in the pool along with some strengthening exercises. It's nothing compared to many of the other posters on this forum. And you can see by my ticker that since January, I've dropped 86 lbs. And I started with a higher BMI than you. Look at my tag...if you are compliant, you will succeed. Those who do not lose optimally, do not follow the rules. Find a lapband doctor. You do not want to remove most of your stomach without knowing exactly what you are getting into. The lapband can be reversed. A sleeve is forever.

How much do you have to lose? How old are you? How long have you been overweight?

I take 10-325 Vicodyn 3 times a day and Diclofenac. They Dr was only going to give me 5-325, so I just told him nevermind. My pain management Dr gave me some extra in case I needed them for surgery. He also told me to not drive if I take 2 of them, but I otherwise drive fine. Even on 2 of them though, I feel ok to drive, I just don't do it though. If I take 2 I am in a lot of pain and don't want to drive anyway.

I got it on my kindle and have just started to read it. I like how it is broken out by the different stages. Since I am just beginning, i am reading from the beginning. I am just trying to get as much information as possible so I can be well informed and be armed and ready when i go to my doctor and request the surgery. Good luck on your journey Fit!!

The information provided by it is so much better than what your provider may give you. If anything it will provoke some questions to things they didn't tell you.

LOL Fit2btied....I totally agree. Anyways, I'm just hoping it's not too detrimental to my surgery this week. My doc just said that its important to not eat so that my pancreas is smaller during surgery and that I lose a little weight before surgery. So I hope that he can't tell too bad that I have cheated on this liquid diet.< /p>

What gets me about the pre op diet, and I know its necessary for some, is that if I had the will
Power to not eat for 2 weeks and stick to shakes I wouldn't need the band. Lol
I'll find out tomorrow what my doctor recommends. Good luck.

    I would ask a lot:
How many Lap Band surgeries has the surgeon performed?
What brand gastric band does he use and what size?
Will you stay overnight in the hospital?
What is his follow up schedule?
Does he have an afterhours number in case of emergencies?
How often does he do fills?
Will you need a pre op diet and if so, what one and for how long?
What does the post op diet consist of?

Best I can tell is its when you can go approx 4 hours between meals before getting hungry and reaching satisfaction with less food. I havent got there yet and have only had one fill. Hopefully, I will know this personally one day.

Some say hunger is taken care of only between meals...The chart says "Not Hungry"....I am one that is never hungry, 24 hours a day...the band is there all the time, so why should the benefits not be there all the time .....never understood how the band can work just some of the time....but that's me, not everybody....
Also, I get automatic portion control...there is just so much I can eat, making it IMPOSSIBLE to overeat.....so things like buffets, parties, big holiday dinners, etc....don't concern me the slightest.....either does head hunger....
With all that I have had good steady weight loss, untill there was nothing left to loose (fat). And all that equals "Patient Satisfaction", YOU BET!!!!
EASIEST thing I have ever done...nothing compared to the struggles of dieting.....

Honestly, I spend more money on food. I may eat less but healthy food is far more expensive than cheap food. It cost a lot less to snack on a Little Debbie than an apple and Peanut Butter. Cheap fatty ground beef is a lot cheaper than chicken breast, too. Fresh veggies and fruit add quite a bit to the food bill, too.

This isn't a question but just something helpful. Eat with a baby spoon, might sound silly but that is the right amount to put in your mouth to chew chew chew. Good Luck! The band is a great tool!

Do what is comfortable for you, It doesn't matter if it's a Surgical Center OR A hospital..Just because it's a hospital doesn't mean it's going to be any more sterile then a surgical center, for anyone to suggest this is just ludicrous There isn't any guarantee that just because you go to the hospital that they will keep you overnight either that is between YOU and YOUR Surgeon.
    GOOD LUCK

I stayed overnight, with both my first and second band, and I really needed it, everyone is different, I prefer a hospital in the event complications occur.
I honestly would not feel comfortable having surgery at a surgery center, especially where the lap band has to be in a very sterile environment to prevent any infections.

I made the choice to stay overnight. It was really a good choice because it gave them time to run extra test and to do a screening just to make sure everything was ok and that I could tolerate liquids the following day. I do not think I would have wanted to go home right after surgery. But that's just me.
As far as in fills, that solely depends on you. Some people do not need fills in order to be in the green zone. (The lucky people) Other people get them between 4-6 weeks. you need to allow your body the opportunity to adjust to the fills. I suggest if you are still not satisfied on 1 cup of food, 3 times a day for 3-4 hours to schedule and appointment.
These are also good questions to ask your doctor since they will be the ones to operate on you.
