stept04 reacted to ♕ajtexas♕ in am i allowed to drink something before a meal??
Drinking before, during and after meals is a subject that is constantly debated. Every doctor is different and so you will get all kind if answers. Your best bet is ask your doctor.
My doctor allows drinking with meal, just wait 1 minute after bit. That being said I am more comfortable not drinking with my meal. I drink before and I drink after.
This works for me but as suggested check with your doctor. Best wishes.

It would be best to ask your medical team this question, as this may vary by physician preferences.
I was advised to wait for an entire year post op to have any alcohol. I almost made it a year before having a glass of wine, and did not have any adverse effects.
You should be aware that it may take less alcohol to experience the effects from it, so judge accordingly. My surgeon warned ahead of time that he would not be writing any letters to assist patients who got stopped for DUI because they were not monitoring the effects of using alcohol post op.

Ask your doctor. Some restrict alcohol the first 6-12 months after surgery. Others allow it after you're fully healed 4-6 weeks after surgery. It all depends on your surgeon.

I'm not sure there are any restrictions. May want to wait 4 weeks just to be on the safe side? Just remember that alcohol can cause some dehydration making your band feel tighter afterwards.

stept04 reacted to skb123 in pre op liquid diet gone bad
I only had to do one day of liquid Protein Shakes before my surgery and everything went just fantastic. No problems at all. None of the usual post surgery complaints other than I really want to start strength training again and I cannot until after my one month check up with the surgeon. I think any good surgeon would not do it if they thought there would be a problem. No worries!

Gowalking is correct. There is nothing anyone can do to help at this point. If your liver hasn't shrank sufficiently then there is a very real risk the surgeon won't complete the surgery for your own safety.
I would be honest with your surgeon. If he chooses to reschedule your surgery to a later date it's still better than going into surgery and coming out with all the scars but no band.

Unfortunately we can't help you with this as no one can control what you do except you. The damage may already have been done. Be honest with your surgeon, explain what you did by not following the diet and see if he will reschedule the surgery so you get another opportunity to follow the diet this time and be successful. This is a better option than him opening you up and not placing the band. Good luck to you..hope all goes well.

It's really important you figure out the cause of the reflux, stuck episodes, and vomiting before getting the Lap Band. All these things can lead to band slips and erosion so it's important they are addressed before surgery so you don't put yourself at heightened risk for complications. It's also important to make sure there isn't an underlying medical condition that would be contradictory to the band.
    Best wishes.

You sound very motivated. And those who are motivated do well. Here's my experience. I used to be hungry all the time...starving actually though that's ridiculous considering how much I stuffed myself. Now, I get hungry but not ravenous. And by the time I finish my band sized portion, I feel satisfied...not full. Full no longer exists. What you should hope to feel is satiety. With that satiety comes the control to not overeat or chose the wrong foods. I've been banded since mid January, and have lost 80 lbs so far. I have another 40 to go but have no doubts that I will make that goal. Good luck to you...I am confident you will not fail.

For me, the difference is hunger. Because the band controls my appetite, I feel satisfied on very little food. Whereas before I had the band I'd be starving all the time so constantly grazing a preoccupied with food. Now, it's no longer an issue. Plus, because it takes so little food to satisfy me, I don't feel deprived.
Btw, you get food stuck and slime now? Without the band? Why?

You go girl. I was 47 when I got banded I wish I could have my life back but I'll have to settle for half my life back. So if you have this opportunity now at your age, what a great gift to be able to give yourself, A lot of us did not have this opportunity at your age, You'll be giving your family a great gift too. I was unable to do things with my family because of the weight and I can never get that back, I hated being embarrassed to be out in public I spent my life in the house hardly ever going anywhere I even missed my daughters graduation which I'll never be able to get over the shame of. I also lost my best friend because I was unable to go to her husbands retirement. She never forgave me. So take this chance and run with it, literally LOL, and never be embarrassed again. Good luck

You can try liquid motrin to help with the immediate swelling issue. I also agree with everyone's advice of going on liquids for a few days. If you get to the point where you cannot get down liquids you'll need to have some Fluid taken out of your band.

chicken sandwiches are more often than not chicken BREAST... That's too dry/tough a meat, and if you chose to eat it, you must be EXTRA careful and chew chew chew. Do what the person above suggested... I hope you feel better soon!!

Go back to drink liquids for a day or two and then to mushies and see how it goes. If it doesn't get better you need to call your doctor and get a little taken out. You will be swollen from throwing up and getting stuck so the liquid only should help.

The weight that you register when you meet the surgeon is the weight that counts. I had the same question and also was under the BMI requirement quickly but don't fret, you are supposed to lose a ton of weight that is what the pre-op is for!

    Hello Ltnt,
My husband also played football and has more muscle mass than fat, although combined has put him in a considerably higher weight range than desired. I understand your issues/goals completely. Like you, he also bought an additional year to convince himself it was time for help. I think the band will help you considerably.
As for reaching a min BMI. I believe once you qualify for the band and insurance approves the procedure you are no longer on the watch clock per say. They prefer wl prior to the procedure to minimize fatty liver and to assist in a speedy recovery and this is per doc orders so it should not be an obstacle.

Congrats on your decision. What a perfect time to get banded. I was 32 when I got banded and would have preferred to have done this 10 years earlier. You are giving yourself the greatest gift

One of the hardest things through the last 2 years for me was making ME TIME and putting myself first for a change....BUT I also knew I had to be around to care for my family especially my special needs son...when my arms got shorter then my bellie was wide and I couldn't lift him any more I knew....the time was NOW...You can do it...baby steps...and put yourself first or a change ...~hugs~

I'm living proof it can be done.
I sounded just like you, always tomorrow or next week.
Today is the day. You want to be healthy? I bet more than anything, you do.
It's time to take care of you!!! No one else will, its up to you.
Your profile is not filled out, so I really don't know where you are in this process, but I would suggest, eating good Protein at every meal. A salad will not hold you over, unless it has Protein in it, like chicken. Protein, protein, protein is the key to keeping full longer. Drinking lots and lots of Water will help too.
    You can do this!
Sorry that you have an unwell husband, that must be stressful and stress is not helpful. Try a find a new way to relieve stress, like taking a walk, pulling weeds, cleaning something or a hobby, do not use food.
Say I can and I will because "I want this".
