I am three years post op and I can drink while eating but I don’t recommend it. For one, I’m pretty confident my pouch was left bigger than most since I was always able to eat more than expected from day one. For two, I gained my weight back and this could have contributed. I am thinking I am doing a revision and the PA reminded me I should be doing all those things such as the 30:30:30 (30 before and after with no Water and take at least 30 minutes to eat your meal). They haven’t checked it yet but if it is possible to stretch the sleeve in any way, I worry that I have stretched mine. Regardless, he explained that the purpose of not doing both even once you have room is because the liquid flushes the food through your system quicker so you don’t feel full as long. In terms of the size bites you can take they will gradually increase BUT, ideally you will still stay with “normal” sized bites but with time in between so that full signal can get to your brain. Hopefully others can Learn from my mistakes. Apparently they make these rules for a reason 😔

In time, yes you’ll be able to take normal sized bites (whatever that is) but not big mouthfuls. You’ll notice as the weeks pass you can take more than just part of a teaspoon until you work out what size bite you are able to take. For me, it’s more not swallowing too much than the size of the bite. But smaller bites do help ensure you to take time to eat your meal & allow the message you’ve had enough to get through (takes a good 20+ minutes) & to think about your eating not mindlessly shovelling food in.
You may find you don’t have to wait 30 mins before & after eating to drink & can get away with less time. Or you may be able to have the odd sip while you eat. Again this is an in time/eventually thing & working out what you can do as against anyone else. But remember, fluids will temporarily fill you & will flush food through your digestive system more quickly.

How long ago did you have your surgery? If it was recently it could be swelling or internal bruising. If it was a while ago it could be internal or external scar tissue. Next time you visit your doctor or surgeon ask them what they think & what can be done to reduce it if it is something that bothers you.
Try gently massaging the scar area with Vitamin E oil or bio oil. I used bio oil on my scars & you can hardly see them. I’ve used it on older scars too. It helped fill in a depressed scar that was years old too.

That’s such silly advice. Make high protein choices. We make those choices every day. Okay up your protein but also up your calories. Your calories or volume of food you eat should be slowly but steadily increasing as you progress until you get to the point you’re maintaining. Until that time, you will keep losing but the rate slows & slows. Like many of the others above I kept losing for almost another year after I reached goal so about 18 months in total. (Wasn’t intending to lose more but it took time to increase my portions & calories to a point it the loss stopped plus it was obviously where my body wanted to be as I’m still there.) And the loss in those last months was grams a week (or none) not kilograms.
It’s not over until it’s over.

    Nothing is too slow, really.
If you are losing weight, you are winning.
We all get to same place eventually, more or less.
At your current weight and height, 800 cals is well below your maintenance level so if you keep going, it'll keep coming off until u reach ur equilibrium (where your intake matches your expenditure...which is still a ways away, based in your info)
    You are doing great!

not really. When I was 6-12 months out, I averaged about 5 lbs a month. After I hit the year mark, there were months when I only lost 2 lbs. At 176 lbs, you're getting closer and closer to goal - and the closer you get, the slower it goes. Just keep at it. I continued to lose until I was 20 months out, even though those last few months it was very slow going.

    courtesy of google:

you can see that the stomach is in fact smaller after a revision to bypass. and main diff is bypass also "bypasses" the pyloric valve, while sadi/ds still makes use of it (as does the original sleeve).
...but how your surgeon would do either surgery "without touching" your stomach is a head scratcher.
can you go back to your surgeon and have them explain your surgery to you (with pictures, if need be!). dont leave until you completely understand. while we can offer our knowledge and experience, we are not doctors...and you may get conflicting info on here that confuses you more.

I don't think there's really a difference in how much you can eat. At first you probably won't be able to eat as much because you'll be swollen from the surgery for awhile, but after that - I don't think so because I've known several people who've had revisions, and I don't remember people mentioning that.

It’s not only a full time job but a lifetime job. I found eating & drinking to a routine very helpful while losing & maintaining. I still watch what I eat (nutrients & calories) & how much I eat. I know I can’t eat whatever I want otherwise I’ll be back where I started. Of course I have more flexibility now in regard to certain foods & how much & how often I have them.
Some great suggestions from the others. You can start by slowly incorporating a couple every week or two & see how you go.
While you are still losing it’s very important to stick closely to your eating plan. Though I would question a plan that says you can eat whatever you like at 4 months. Maybe go back to your dietician and ask for more guidance around your food choices, & ideas for ingredients or cooking styles you can swap in or incorporate.
Also you may find speaking with a therapist helpful. Many do. A therapist will help you work through your eating & relationship with food, what drives you to eat, support you develop strategies to manage challenges like cravings.
    You can do this.

Because of my co-morbid conditions he feels that is best, and also the amount of weight I need to lose to be in a safe/healthy space. I have pre existing pretty severe GERD and Gastroparesis and he said that Bypass is best and I need to lose at least 180 pounds to be closer to an ideal weight, and he said Bypass allows for a greater percentage of loss versus sleeve.

I had a gastric bypass around 11 months ago. I turned 69 in January, which means I'm in my 70th year. I had no issues with the surgery or recovery. My eating habits are curbed by what I can tolerate and I now go to the gym 4 times a week, most of the time with a very good trainer. It's been a long time since I've felt this good-- sure, there are trade-offs but to me, totally worth it especially compared to where I was pre-surgery. The biggest issue for me has been building muscle mass.

    100% everything@Arabesque said.

I wanted to add that cake, Cookies, any of the comfort and slider foods (overly processed foods) generally won't fill you up and many can tolerate them but choose not to. They are designed to eat rapidly and they also get quickly absorbed so it's really hard to gauge the effectiveness of one's wLS.

Tomo reacted to GreenTealael in I'm hungry ALL THE TIME
Have you reached out to your team? What did they think? Are you still allowed to supplement with Protein Shakes?
At 7 weeks post op I wasn’t hungry at all. But some people regain their hunger signals sooner/later. Also some people experience what they think is hunger and it’s either thirst or reflux.
I can tell you that I’m 6+ yrs out and I’m hungrier if I don’t get enough Protein but focus on carbs. It’s almost like I have to start my days properly (fluids then protein) or I’m hungry all day long. This does not happen If I front load my meals with a protein.
I hope you find a solution!

I am 11 days out from bypass and I too feel like I can have more than I am supposed to or that I heard from others. I felt like that the day after surgery. I had no problems with my Fluid intake but my care team did not seem to think it was an issue. I cant take big drinks but I can drink my 11oz Protein Shake without feeling “full”. I can eat my 1/4 cup of strained Soup and dont feel full. I ate 2 popsicles in a row last night and not a pain or discomfort at all. My Dr didnt seem to think it was an issue and told me to just listen to my body and get my fluids in right now over anything else so thats what I am focused on.

@SaraSara4 Lots of nerves were cut during the surgery so messages about feeling full, having had enough, eaten/drunk too much, etc. either don’t get through or don’t get through in the same way. So the listen to your body advice doesn’t really work fully yet. Plus liquids go through your digestive system much more quickly so you won’t ‘feel full’. It’s why it’s important to stick to the recommendations regarding portion size, sipping your fluids slowly & eating slowly too. Tread slowly & carefully.
I used to dilute my cup of shake or Soup to around 1.5 cups or more & literally took about 2 hours to sip my through it. They count as fluids so all good.
It takes around 6-8 weeks to recover & for the nerves to be back working properly & even then the messages could be different than what they were.

Saturday 6th april and i am finally home !! So excited to be in my own bed tonight i could not get comfy in hospital … i barely made it through 1.5 hours without waking up each night.
I can’t wait to finally get some rest.

I picked up all my meds and a nurse will be coming twice daily to change bandages and administer injections but i feel pretty good.

Trying to get into the swing of drinking and eating but it feels like i can’t do both right now. I’ve had 500ml of Water by 3pm but one managed to eat like 70g of food all day.

Hoping it gets easier each day because today got me worried about the lack of calories i’m getting in … going to work on making lower volume higher cal and higher Protein purées so it’s less quantity but better quality food

So glad to be home ! Everything feels so much more manageable being in a comfortable environment 😊

Tomo reacted to Jasmine33 in 35 kg down in 1 year
My journey towards a healthier weight began with a decision to take control of my health and well-being. At 102 kg, I knew I needed professional guidance and support to navigate the complexities of weight loss. Before the surgery, I had extensive consultations with the medical team. They took the time to understand my medical history, lifestyle, and weight loss goals before recommending the gastric sleeve surgery as the most suitable option for me. The day of the surgery arrived, and although I felt nervous, the surgery went smoothly.
After the gastric sleeve surgery, the first days were tough as I adjusted to the changes. Gradually, I felt improvements in my energy and mobility. It was a journey of ups and downs, but I emerged stronger, prioritizing my health more than ever.
As I embarked on my post-operative diet and lifestyle changes, I was supported by the dietitian service. They worked closely with me to develop a personalized nutrition plan tailored to my needs, ensuring that I received the essential nutrients while promoting healthy weight loss and long-term success. Over the next year, I witnessed incredible transformations in my body and overall health. With each passing month, the numbers on the scale decreased steadily, and I noticed improvements in my energy levels, mobility, and self-confidence. As I reached my goal weight of 67 kg, I couldn't help but feel an immense sense of pride and gratitude.

Tilapia w/ mashed potatoes and vegetables. This is the maximum I can eat, and I ate it all. I think I’m slightly underestimating the potatoes but my food scale broke and I haven’t replaced it yet? Anyone still using a food scale?

    Late breakfast:
Toasted low carb Protein bread spread with a little bit of feta cheese, over easy egg cooked in a tiny bit of my homemade chilli crisp (tried to drain as much oil as I could), topped with more feta cheese and scallions. So good but I could hardly get through half of it. Will try again later. 225 calories for the whole thing, I plan to eat the rest later.
