I think I'm giving up my scale for lent! This is going to be the hardest thing for me to do, because I am a daily/multiple times a day weigher. I think this is going to help me remove my obsessive focus from the numbers. Anyone else giving up something?

Ohh... The scale. That is a good one. I think I'll join you in that challenge. I'm 3 lbs away from onderland and have been obsessing over that scale, this just may be the break I need. Great idea, thanks for posting.

Dont feel bad. I ate 2 big chocolate chip Cookies a few weeks ago before i even realized it. Cake, cookies, icecream...they all slide right through for me. Now that I know that I make it a conscious decision to avoid those things. This is a learning process, and as long as you are learning from your mistakes it's not a huge deal. I applaud your restraint in only eating one peice, lol. My mom is from NOLA and I adore king cake!

Groovinchikin reacted to PdxMan in How to handle critics?
Don't give them anything to start with. What is the motivation to tell them what is a very personal decision? When people started asking if I was losing weight and how, I told them through Portion Control and exercise. Very true statements. If it was someone who seemed to know the journey of an obese person, I shared that I had VSG. "Normal" people don't understand the struggle. I wouldn't wish them to know the struggle. But I can't explain my deep-seated issues with my relationship with food to the level they can understand, so why even try.
For folks you have already told, and they are pesimestic, just tell them, "Thank you for your concern, I love you, too"

Have your Vitamin A levels checked just in case. Decreased levels can cause rashes and dry Patches. I noticed that my legs and back were very itchy (other issues arise if not addressed). It turned out that my Vitamin A was depleted and my doctor had me had additional supplements (A and Beta Carotene) to bring my levels back up.

This is a very normal part of losing weight. As you gain weight, your fat absorbs and hold hormones that are in your body. As you lose the weight these extra hormones are released. When you lose weight fast, these hormones are released much faster, and in some ways can flood your body. Many people have different hormones trapped, and react different ways. Some of us will go through Patches of really acne filled skin (I've gone through a few break outs already myself) some women become particularly fertile, which is why many of us are advised to use at least 2 forms of birth control after the procedure for at least a year etc. Just know this too shall pass Good luck on your journey!

Groovinchikin reacted to moregoodtimes in Wanting to leave my SO?
If you make the decision to leave, make sure your personal items are safe before you give a clue. Important papers, jewelry, keepsakes, bank account, etc are all things to lock down. You may think you know how things will go, but once the other person realizes it is really over, you have no idea how they will react. From experience, I can tell you that it does not always play out theway you have imagined it in your head.
    All the best.

I told my boyfriend and my sisters. I'm not telling anyone else unless they ask. I told my sisters not to tell anyone unless they ask. So if someone ASKS my sister why I'm getting so skinny, I told her she can go right ahead and tell them that I had VSG done. I'm not ashamed of it.. I just don't want to advertise it ahead of time and then have people have expectations of what I "should be" losing. I figure at my size by the time anyone notices I've lost, I'll be down a hundred pounds

Then you should go shout it it from the rooftops. I, for one will applaud you and encourage you!
However, just because not everyone takes that approach, it doesn't make them a phony or ashamed. Some of us simply happen to think it's no one else's business. Plain and simple. Every one's journey is different and should take the approach that is best for them.
Good luck to you. Good luck to us all!

Hi! I see you are a Maliapur patient too! He's an amazing surgeon, and Huntsville hospital staff is fantastic! I'm 23 and unmarried. So of course my parents and my brother know, along with my grandparents. Other than that I only told my best friend. My mom and her cousin had gastric bypass a few years ago, and the entire (gigantic) family was in an uproar over their decision and how fast/much they were/weren't losing. I don't want to be scrutinized like they were so I decided to keep it to myself. It's going great so far. Good luck with your surgery!
