shanc625 got a reaction from Harrier's Woman in What Your Non-Health Reason?
I'd like to be able to go to the hair salon and not worry about how the awful lighting and oversized mirror make me look while trying to avoid my reflection
I'd like to be able to get up in the morning and not have to strategically try on numerous outfits until i find one that " doesn't make me look too big"
I want to be in pictures again

shanc625 got a reaction from Bubie1916 in A Special Thank You!
So I was just banded on Monday sept 17. The week prior to surgery was awful. I was in a fog of doubt and scared that I in fact would be one of the worst case scenarios. I was close to just saying forget it until I received a message in my LBT inbox from a " life saver".
This person happened to see that my surgery was soon and that we had the same surgeon in common among other things. Her message and late night responses to my frantic texts the night before surgery got me to my "pre-op" status. She has been there to answer any question or problem that comes up, such as having too much watermelon whey Protein.
I just wanted to say thank you to horsegirl she has been a life saver!

shanc625 got a reaction from kyrasgrandma in Final Countdown
Well here I am. Counting down the hours untill surgery and I have to say this has been one of the longest days of my life. Excited to begin this long awaited journey one minute and then totally freaking out the next, thinking "what am I doing?". Rethinking my reasons for being here and focusing on my goal is what gives me moments of clarity. I wouldn't be here if I didn't need the help. Having this site available has been a life saver. While some of the posts people write on here can scare the crap out of you (ie: not losing weight, being miserable, stuck episodes) I feel that I have also gained priceless knowledge of what not to do which makes me feel confident that I will be successful. So thank you to those that post encouraging and inspiring posts that keep me going on this journey.

shanc625 reacted to scorrea in Can Anyone Handle Steak?
I can. very tender. small bites. In fact, I had filet mignon the other night, a simple 4 oz steak grilled with some veggies. Was good! I think that a tougher cut might have been a problem. I just know to cut the pieces really small.
Good luck!

Good luck tomorrow. I got banded last Thursday and things are going good. I've been taking things easy and I'm feeling a lot better today. I'm shocked that I don't have abdominal pain! Burpings is a drag though. Good luck!

Congrats and good luck! I am 10 days after you and just like you very nervous! I have never had any surgeries done either. It will be interesting to see how it is, and I hope that my defense mechanism of flirting doesn't kick in lol.
My doctor is young and good looking.

Ok, first.... BREATHE!!!
I am not sure where you have been reading as you are describing the extreme cases, not the norm. Sure, there are no guarantees; however, most people go through the procedure without those difficulties. Yes, you have to learn to eat slower, smaller portions and there are a few foods you may not be able to eat going forward (dry meats, doughy bread...). You may have a "stuck" episode and you learn how to not have it happen again after it passes. It isn't a daily occurence and preventable.
The only time people seem to have reflux issues is if the band is too tight (after several fills). It is quickly and easily remedied after removing a bit of the Fluid. Yes, there are risks with this and ANY surgery so I am not trying to minimize that. It just sounds like you are associating that with most people's experience.
It is true that EXCESSIVE (not the occasional) vomitting can harm the band's placement. However, if you were to be ill (flu, etc) you could ask your reg. dr for anti-nausea meds to remedy that (as many do). Also, think about how much you have vomitted in the past year. Guessing it didn't happen too often.
It sounds like you are trying to sabbotage yourself with pre-surgery jitters. It is natural to be nervous as you start this journey. I would urge you to go back to what brought you to this decision rather than focusing on all the "what-ifs". Remember too that if you were to have "issues" this surgery is completely reversible should you have adverse effects. I agree w/ Angela above that if your doctor still approved for you to have the surgery, knowing you have Chrons, then they must not be concerned about it.
I had my surgery through the same hospital you will (guessing CDH). My surgeon was Dr. Klem. However, I will say, Dr. Vallina performed an emergency appendectomy on my some years back and he was a WONDERFUL and thorough doctor (and not too hard on the eyes, lol). Personally, I have a lot of faith in Dr. Vallina from my prior experience. He was an excellent doctor. The only reason I didn't go through him for my lap band procedure was it was easier for me to get to Dr. Klem's office. When I had asked, Dr. Klem told me he has been doing this for years and has not had any issues like you described.
In life, if you keep doing the same things, you will keep getting the same results. The choice to do the surgery is yours. Just try to make that decision based on real statistics as you appear to be honing in on the extreme, worst case scenarios. Have you attended any of the support group meetings at CDH? I think they are the 3rd or 4th Monday of every month at the hospital. They are hosted by a dietician and offer great advice and you will meet others in varied stages of the process.
I had my surgery on 7/25/12 and haven't looked back. There are days that are difficult but it hasn't been from the band. It has been from the emotional adjustment to food and eating healthier.
Good luck to you. I would be happy to speak with you further if you would like. I also agree with Angela, if you are not ready then postpone this until you are. Though it really sounds like a case of "stage-fright" to me.

I'll be staying overnight , which I dread, but I think I think it will be for the best since they wont me leave until i can succesfully swallow. Rather have it taken care of there then to get home and have issues I guess.

If you were not nervous you would not be human.
I've had many surgeries. They usually give you something for nerves after your settled in bed. There busy connecting you to monitors and making sure you're comfortable. After you go back to operating room, you're there talking to everyone and next thing you know, you're waking up in recovery. The nurses have never been anything but nice.
I wish you all the best!
