I don't see my NUT anymore unless I really need a consult, so I thought I would ask here. I am 11 weeks post op. Feeling great. Off all restrictions. When did you have alcohol the first time? I am well aware that I will only probably be able to drink 1/2 a beer once I drink one, but how long did you wait. I really want a beer. I'm not a big drinker, but I would like to be able to enjoy the occasional beverage.

Yes Yes Yes!! I am 12 weeks out and STILL struggle at times. I literally felt like I have mourned the lost of my very best friend. Eventually you will be able to have most anything, but odds are, you won't want to once that weight starts falling off and you start feeling like a million bucks. The liquid stage is the toughest, and once you start adding foods, you won't feel so restricted. Hang in there!!!

I was sleeved on 7/18 and have had 3 "meltdowns". The scale hasn't moved in a week. Today, I indulged in potato chips because I heard they go down easy. I sit here wondering if I should feel guilty. Part of me says "yes" the other part of me reminds myself that I am human and technically haven't indulged in three weeks. Siiigggghh... I think it's this black and white thinking that got me into this in the first place. I love what JD7176 said - you have to tame the beast somehow. I guess it's about doing is smartly and in moderation.

Do you cry when you look in the mirror? Do you have to wear pants with elastic waist? These are a FEW things that got to me and I literally could go on and on and on. The battle physically and mentally of being obese is horrible. I have one thing to say. NEVER question your decision to have this surgery. I literally talked myself out of the operation TWICE. I'm 14 weeks post op and I'm still adjusting to my new tummy but my life has made a 360. I'm falling in love again and the best thing about it. It's with MYSELF. Do this it will be the best thing for u

The more Protein you get, the faster you heal, and the faster your body can burn fat. Stalls in weight loss are very common. I have experienced weeks where I don't lose a pound, and weeks (like this week) where I'm losing 1 lb-1.5 lbs. a DAY! Hang in there. This too shall pass. But please get that protein in. Your body needs it. I hated the shakes too until I found one pre-made shake that I like that is packed with 30 g of protein in one shake. I make myself drink one every morning and get the rest of my protein from food.< /p>

I drink my Premier Protein shake every morning for breakfast because it packs a whopping 30 g of Protein. I try to eat something small every two hours or so for the rest of the day.
For my mini meals, I eat "cupcake" recipes from emilybites.com. I also buy low sodium ham, I put a wedge of Laughing Cow swiss cheese on the ham, add a sanwich stacker pickle, a dab of mustard, and throw it in a hot skillet for a few minutes on each side so it melts the cheese. SO GOOD..low calorie and high in Protein. Greek yogurt. Hard bolied eggs. tuna. I buy roasted chicken and tear it apart. I eat that plain, or add it to a small amount of greens and make a mini ceasar salad. These are just a few.
For drinks, I have a 24 oz insulated cup. I drink ice Water from it all day and make sure I drink three cups a day.

My surgeons states no carbonated drinks. Will fill you up quicker, irritate the pouch and eventually stretch it out. .
    THIS IS what I found on the internet;
Surgeons have differing opinions about alcohol use after gastric bypass. Some suggest that it is safest to avoid all alcohol because of the problem of alcohol addiction that may sneak up on individuals. Other surgeons feel that alcohol represents "wasted calories" with no nutritional value. Still others fear that alcohol may be one of the substances that could increase the risk of marginal ulcers. In our practice we have suggested that patients can have an alcoholic beverage once in a while as a treat, but avoid regular use of alcohol. I'm not aware of any research that has documented the percentage of patients who use alcohol regularly say five years after surgery.
I think that any gastric bypass patient will realize that alcohol will hit their system much faster and harder than before surgery.

If you feel you are ready to consume alcohol at this point (I would wait, myself), it is strongly suggested that you don't have beer.
The carbonation in beer will probably hurt due to the bubbles expanding your stomach, and the acidity due to the carbonic acid in the beer might also make your stomach upset.
I tried a Sminoff Ice Light (that's a citrus vodka cooler sweetened with sucralose) a few days ago (I'm about 12 weeks post-op) and I could only drink about 2 sips before it was uncomfortable. It has carbonation and I thought if I took it very slowly, it would be okay. NOT! Plus, truthfully, I didn't really enjoy it at all.
Maybe it was because I was feeling stressed that I was drinking something on the "do not do" list (alcohol AND carbonation), and maybe it was because my tastes have changed. And even from just a couple of sips, I felt the "buzz" very quickly and it wasn't a pleasant buzz........
If you really want to try something alcoholic, try something non-carbonated first and see how a few sips sit before you proceed any further. Make sure you're in a place where if you get a bit "buzzed", it's okay (like home or a friend's place). Make sure you don't have to drive anywhere after. Our alcohol tolerance is so low now that the standard 1 drink per hour and you're okay to drive rule doesn't apply to us anymore!
And finally, alcohol will significantly contribute to dehydration (which is usually why we feel so bad the next day when hung-over!). Make sure you have lots of Water before your drink, and lots more Water after your drink. The last thing you need to do is also get dehyrated, on top of getting tipsy!

My first piece of advice is to stay away from any "horror stories." Only look at success stories. I was sleeved on May 21st. It has changed my life in so many ways in such a short time. I am off all blood pressure and acid reflux medicine. I am only 2 lbs. away from a 50 lb weight loss. Post op recovery was easier than I thought. The more you walk, the better you will feel.
Here is a quick fact I learned before I went in for surgery (and I was very nervous like you). Weight loss surgeries are so common now, that they are considered safer than having your appendix removed. Also, I was freaked out that I was going to die. My therapist said, at the weight you are at you are going to die, so getting this surgery isn't that big of a risk is it???? Wow! Good point. Focus on the good, pray a lot, and trust your body to heal and transform. Good luck!!!

I can relate to this completely. I lost a total of about 70lbs with my lapband and never really felt that I was thin. All my friends and coworkers would tell me how great I looked but I just didn't feel it. I knew I lost the weight but always still saw myself as a big girl. I have several friends who also have had WLS and feel the same way. I guess it is our mental image of ourselves and much like our issues with food it is a hard habit to break so to speak.

As for the Protein Shakes, I hated them post op too. This was a shake I previously loved! I tried a couple new things and didn't really like them any better. However, I had such a BIG container of my original Protein that I decided to just suck it up and drink it every day. Now I actually like it again. I think now that I am at the stage where I can eat real food again (and like Tonja said, it is a chore sometimes!) my taste buds are no longer rejecting the Protein Shake. Hang in there. It all gets better with time.
