  1. Oh man, I feel for you. I had my surgery cancelled on the day of surgery. I was in a gown and everything. I was very upset too. I had made plans with work and had time off and I couldn't help but feel that my whole life had been turned upside down. I came on here and vented and made myself stay positive. I am getting it done next week now. All I can say to you is stay positive! and perhaps you dodged a bullet. Let them have you evaluated for your low blood count. As a nurse that is a very low number that many doctors would have people transfused for. Iron pills will help. Stay hydrated. Let us know how you do!
  2. I have been struggling with the preop weight loss so much. I lost about 14 pounds doing south beach phase 1, and gained a couple pounds just before my surgery and he cancelled it. It has really been very stressful and I'm doing all I can to keep positive. The doctors need the weight loss to shrink the liver so they can get behind it more easily during the procedure. Also, some insurances require it too. I have thoughts like, I'll never succeed so I better just quit, but then I remember how I always fail the other diets and my weight keeps going up. I can't live like this so I HAVE to do this.
  3. Thank you for replying. I really can work myself up sometimes. I had my last shift at my old job last night and it was so great I was practically running out of there! I will miss my friends though. I am thankful that I will have this surgery soon. It will change my life for the better!
  4. Last week I posted how I went in for surgery and the Dr. cancelled on me because I gained a couple pounds. Ok, that really sucked and I'm trying not to think about it too much and keep on with my program until I get a new date. That being said, I am starting a new job on monday. I am a Registered Nurse and work for one of the large health systems in the area. I currently work on a telemetry floor (heart monitors) and I accepted a new position at a different hospital in the PACU ( post-anesthesia unit), and this unit is also linked to the pre-op unit as well. I will be trained on both. My problem is that I realize now that this is the same hospital that my surgeon uses for his patients. I am overthinking this too much, I know. But I am worried. I am afraid of working there and getting to know people, and then in a couple weeks having surgery there and they will know (I've kept it a secret from most people I know except family). I am worried about seeing my surgeon there. I just feel weird about it. I also will feel awkward with the patients of my surgeon since they are going through the surgeries and I'm not (yet). I am happy for everyone who takes control and has the surgery and leads a happier life. But I am still mopey about being delayed. I had originally worked it out so I would finish my current job, and have surgery, then start over in the new place. I do believe everything happens for a reason, but I'm still struggling. I feel so off-balance. Everything seems off and I can't shake it.
  5. God Tiffy, you really hit it on the spot! I can only imagine how good sex will be after I lose the weight! LOL Good luck telling you BF and friends. I still haven't told my friends yet because one of them had the band and spectacularly failed with it by not changing any of her eating habits. Even with her band she can eat more than me and my husband put together. But it's true that even though my hubby was hesitant, it was purely for safety reasons (scared of surgery). If he didn't back me then I'd do it anyway because I need to put myself first for a change. We did go to a little bit of counseling to make sure we were seeing eye to eye about it, but that just helped us out more.
  6. Lol, I have issues with lying. Even if I tried to lie, I'd be dying to confess it right away. Who needs the guilt? When I first started all this I was whiney and weepy but that doesn't get me anywhere.
  7. Thank you for coming back to tell us how you are doing. I come on VST everyday to get my inspiration to keep on going!
  8. I am just trying to stay positive here so I don't keep thinking about what I could have been doing today as opposed to what I am. Everyday is so hard, and I am trying to keep perspective.
  9. I had to google how many pounds were in a stone! congrats!
  10. WOW! You have lost 53 pounds since january? That is awesome! It makes me feel a little better since my surgery has been delayed a few weeks. My brother in law's wedding is coming up in October and it's going to be at Disney. I'm soooo looking forward to feeling like a new girl by then.
  11. I think it is all conditional. You can have a 70 year old who acts like a 50 year old. Then again you see some 40 year olds who seem like they are 80. If you are healthy enough otherwise, I'm sure a doctor will see what can be done.
  12. Wow! That is the most replies I've ever gotten on a topic! I know alot of people think my surgeon is a jerk, and even my hubby thinks so because I felt so bad about the situation yesterday, but I don't think so. He told me that he's been doing these surgeries for years and he travels to few different programs every year to see how they do things and some make you do a preop diet and some don't. He says in the ones who don't, the liver is so much bigger and harder to work around that it makes the procedure alot harder and increases the risks of complications. He said if he didn't care about me then he would do it, and maybe I'd need a bypass due to difficulties during surgery, or a leak that I'd be a greater risk for. He said he might take too much stomach off, or too little. He even stressed that even though I am big girl, I am tiny on the inside because my fat is "peripheral". He said I have a small frame even though I may have never seen it before. So, I agreed with him. And I'm a firm believer that everthing happens for a reason. I also am getting over a cold, and while I wasn't coughing yesterday in the hospital, when I came home I was coughing like crazy all day. I am going shopping today to stock up on no carb stuff, and I am going to keep busy until april 4 when I weigh in again. I'm planning on painting my bedroom and I start a new job next week. I know that when I learn, I learn the hard way. And so I have. I am glad some of the people hear have heard my story so they know not to follow in my mistakes. Thank you for all of your replies!
  13. when I went for my last appt before surgery, they told me to go back to south beach phase 1 immediately to shrink my liver. I was kinda freaked because mentally I had been preparing for a food funeral at least a couple things. I did both. and when my doctor asked me on day of surgery how I did, I said ok. when he heard that I had even had just a tiny bit of carbs he kinda freaked and cancelled my surgery (to be rescheduled in a couple weeks). Now I am sorry, and I feel so bad that I wasted my time, his time and everyone elses who was involved.
  14. My hubby talked me out of it a couple years ago. And he was hesitant now too, but he said he'd support me. His main concern is the risks for complications. Having lost both of his parents already (he's 32) he needs me to be there for him and not get hurt. We saw a counselor to talk about it and we've agreed to disagree basically. He respects that I want it, and he wants me to be happy and healthy too.
  15. You sound like everything will be all good. Make sure you do all your surgeon says to. It is just nerve wracking waiting for the approval. I called my doctor's office many times to check and make sure they didn't forget about me cause I was paranoid!
  16. I haven't seen it in drug stores, but I know there is unflavored protein powder than can be added to food. I haven't checked GNC or anything so they might have some too.
  17. Ok, I just talked to the coordinator. I'm going to go back and weigh in on monday april 4th, and then see her. From there they will reschedule if I lost the weight. I was really upset earlier but I tried not to cry. Now I am still bummed, but I see an opportunity for myself to get where I need to be mentally and physically and lose some weight without the surgery. I know I can do this and I'm feeling better. Thanks for all your input everybody, you are all so experienced here and I just needed to vent to my support peeps. I will let you know how things are going.
  18. More than anything, I just want people to learn from my mistakes. I didn't set out to dupe the doctor and get sleeved and then live the way I feel like. Mostly, I didn't recognize until now how important it was that the liver shrink a nd how just a little bit really affects it. I'm one of those people who rationalizes all of my bad behaviour to keep it making sense (didn't work out because I have to work, didn't eat properly because I have a headache or I did lots of exercise just before). I always knew I was my own worst enemy. I am working up the nerve to call the surgery coordinator's office now. I gotta fix my mess.
  19. Yeah, I hear that some people do a 2 week liquid diet to shrink the liver. And he says some doctors don't ask it of their patients. But he said it makes the surgery alot easier for him and cuts the risks down by alot. So now I'm learning the hard way. :/
  20. Well, I slept good last night, and got up early. Went to the hospital to get ready for the surgery. Vitals are done, a lab was drawn for just in case I needed a transfusion. They gave me a blood thinner. Then the doctor comes to see me and notices that my weight went up a couple pounds since my last appt. Then he asks me if I had any carbs this week. I can't lie (except to myself) and admitted I had a little bit. Surgery is cancelled. He explained how all carbs get stored in the liver and swells it up, even if it's only a little bit. I protested as much as I could. He talked to me for a bit and I know he's right. I just had been making excuses for myself. So I put my clothes back on and my coat, and did a walk of shame out of the Surgery Department. I know he is right. I know I screwed up. I am so angry at myself. I have to call his surgery coordinator today to figure it all out. He told me to come back to his office in 2 weeks to weigh in. After that I don't know how it will work. I tried not to cry at the hospital, and now I'm home. I just feel numb.
  21. You get to the surgery suite in the hospital, they will ask you a bunch of questions that you've already gone through a million times, you get a hospital gown and they start an IV line to give you medicine and keep you hydrated. You wait in a room with your family and chill a bit until they are ready to take you. Sometimes they give you medicine before you are transferred to OR and sometimes they give it to you when you get there. The medicine will make you feel pretty goofy and you'll fall asleep. Last time I had surgery, it felt like I blinked my eyes and was waking up. You'll feel groggy and maybe a little confused. You might wonder if you even had the surgery yet. There are nurses all around checking your vital signs and heart rate and rhythm on the monitor. They can give you pain and nausea medicine if you need it. When you are stable and when you are assigned a room you will be transferred. The worst feeling from anesthesia I ever felt was a sore throat or hoarse voice. It wasn't bad at all. Everyone's experience is different. I have my surgery tomorrow too, so good luck!
  22. I am sooo happy for you! What great news to hear!
  23. I just took Dayquil and Theraflu. Hot brothy Soups and tea seemed to help too.
  24. Weird! Check with your primary. If nothing else, go see a chiropracter that does massage too. I went to one for a while and I swear I was in love with him for how good he got my back feeling. {memories!} lol
  25. Yeah, I'm keeping up on my dayquil until tonight. I feel alot better than I did over the weekend so I feel better. Stressing out over it probably didn't help.
