Fat, Carbs, And Sugar -- Oh My!

Hey everyone!

 

I bought a couple protein drink packages at Target this evening to trial before going into my strict liquid diet. They aren't clear so I won't be able to have them for a couple weeks post-op, but I just thought I would trial some now that I have time and am feeling 100%. I still plan on giving Isopure a try as well-- the pre-mixed drinks to be exact. Below are the drink brands and nutrition info. Do you think they are okay??

 

Atkins Day Break (Morning Snack/Light Breakfast)- Strawberry Banana Shake (11 fl oz)

 

Calories: 140

Total Fat: 9g

Saturated Fat 2.5g

Trans Fat: 0g

Sodium: 58 mg

Total Carbohydrate: 10g

Protein: 10g

 

EAS Advantedge Carb Control (Ready-To-Drink): Chocolate Fudge (11 fl oz)

 

Calories: 110

Total Fat: 3g

Saturated Fat: 0.5g

Trans Fat: 0g

Sodium: 340 mg

Total Carbohydrate: 4g

Protein: 17g

 

Obviously the second product looks better. Not sure how they taste just yet- will update either tomorrow or Sunday. Are both products fine to drink post-op for protein purposes once out of the clear liquid stage? Are there too many carbs in the Strawberry Banana shake??

 

Also, I'm still confused on how much fat, carbs and sugar I should stick to per day. I plan to keep sugar and fat as low as possible, eating and drinking low fat/fat free and low sugar items. I know my doctor will probably discuss this with me when the date comes closer; however, I would like to know now, allowing me to stock up on items. Also, for those of you who are post-op, how much protein do/did you take in per day with shakes?

A very popular shake is the Premier Protein shake you can get at Costco. For the chocolate flavor it is 160 cals, 30 g protein, 5 g. carb, and 3 fat I believe, the vanilla has 3 g. carbs. They are RTD in paper boxes and one of the more palatable protein shakes of the baskillion brands I have tried, they also give the biggest protein bang for the buck and believe me, you need it post op.

If I have a hard time with them I mix it with a lactose free milk (I am not a person who likes sweets at all, so getting protein shakes in is a chore for me) The goals my team has for their sleeve patients is 600-800 cals per day, 80-100 g of protein, and 48-64 oz or water per day. They dont mention carbs and fat too much, because the rule is always protein first, and if you follow that rule, there is no room for much in the way of carbs., I don't worry about fat. I am lucky if I can hit 60 g of protein post op - it really can be tough to do early on - I am 6 weeks out from surgery on Monday.

Best of luck on the pre-op liquid phase, it can be rough - do not be surprised if your tastebuds change dramatically after surgery, mine did and all of my tasting research was not as helpful as I had hoped because basically everything tasted bad lol. Unjury protein chicken soup became my best friend post surgery :)

The Eas is good. They have another chocolate flavor that tastes better than the fudge one and some stores now carry a cafe carmel I believe its called and its good too. The strawberry is better than the vanilla also.

The Atkins ones started making me sick after while but I have had no problems with EAS at all.

Also have Body Fortress and the Chocolate Peanut Butter and the Vanilla are good if you do shakes out of them. I am trying the Toranis sugar free syrups out in them too, so far so good.

You need take in at least 20 grams of protein twice daily (Thats 40 grams through suppliments). My doctor said that I could only have skim milk to mix with my protein shakes. Don't buy too much!!! Your taste buds might change post-surgery. Mine did. I bought a lot of Unjuy and liked it at first but now I can't stand it. I bought Isopure and try it before surgery...no problems...after surgery no good. I will recommend Nectar. You can buy it online. They have great sample box with like 25 different drinks. They mix really well and have not after taste. Also Premier Protein is one of the best protein drinks you can buy. The vanilla tastes like a melted milkshake to me. Plus its already mixed.

My nutritionist said to look for protein drinks that contain less than 200 calories, less than 10g carbohydrates, and more than 15g protein.

My only take on the carbs is like the Atkins diet and if there are more than 5 protein in anything shake, fruit, veggie, etc then you take that amount from the carbs. So like your Atkins shake says 10 carbs but it also has 10 protein so your "net" carbs are 0. I hope that wasn't too confusing! LOL I do like the taste of the Atkins shake, yummy! I haven't tried the other and the pure protein whey is so yummy with 2 strawberries, 1/4 of a banana and a splenda packet. My favorite!!
