Okay I guess i am really getting nervous now since Tuesday is my day. But can anyone tell me about "the tube"..............I don't know what to expect and I am getting scared.....I here some say that their throat is sore after the surgery..etc. So I just want to know the experiences from others. Will I be awake or under when they put it in?? What can I do to minimize the pain after the surgery? Someone please advise i am really scared right now and I need to know more to be at ease.............Thanks!:biggrin:

you will be under when the put the tube in your throat. The tube is used I believe to help with your breathing and also for a balloon like thingy they have to use. I'm not exactly sure what it does to be honest. I haven't had my surgery yet but i have had surgeries in the past and the tube was used for better breathing.

HI precious! And congrats on being banded next week! You are completely under before they put the tube in, and most often when they take the tube out you will still be under or just waking up. My tube was out and my oxygen mask was on before I started waking up. My throat was EXTREMELY DRY and it hurt a little, but the ice and Water helped. I guess the plastic also leaves a nasty taste in your mouth so that part was a little gross for about a day or 2, but it gets better with time and water. I was freaked out too, but it's really not bad at all. Just the lingering taste and soreness gets annoying but with everything else that will go on the first few days, it won't matter much. :-)

P.S. - Congrats on 100 years....from your Greek Sister in DST.

You will be out before they put the tube in and you will be asleep when its taken out. You will wake up with a somewhat sore and very dry throat. I personally was SO nauseous when I woke up that I couldn't even suck ice chips to get rid of the dryness. It was not a great feeling but it subsided by that evening and I was drinking juice. I went about 8 hrs with horrid cotton mouth and nausea beyond belief (I get that way with anethesia) but it was nothing I couldn't tolerate.

Try not to be so scared. Congrats on your surgery date. Keep us posted!!!!!!

as for the tube...I was worried too but I am happy to report...I DO NOT remember it at all...and my throat was NOT sore and last year I didn't remember it from my hysterectomy either!

Calm down...and good luck! I was soooo scared too, but it is all good!

Yep .... the pre-op jitters. We all went through it. My throat wasn't noticeably sore when I woke up. It wasn't the throat that was catching my attention, it was the port incision, which for me was really tender!

You will be fine! Good luck on the first step of this fabulous journey!

thank you thank you thank you thank you...............you don't know how much you have helped me out...........I don't know what happen but all of a sudden I became extremely nervous about surgery on Tuesday!! My entire family flew in today from South Carolina to be with me (yes I am spoiled......only girl out of 5 kids) and my fiance is soooo supportive so I really need to chill and all of you have help. thanks again....I love yall!!!!!:biggrin:

I was intubated when I had a general anaesthetic for a C-section. You won't even know that there has been a tube down your throat, expect you might find it a bit sore and dry. I didn't find it a problem at all. Basically, my anaesthetist told me that you are intubated, because you are respirated during the operation - so the tube is actually a breathing tube which is used to keep the windpipe open during surgery. Don't worry about it - it's really not a problem at all.

I am glad you feel better...We all go through it but...look how many of us love our band and wouldn't trade it.....If it was bad we all wouldn't be here supporting it....

Even the incisions are worth it....Hang in there and breathe!

Hey girly..... I was scared to death before my surgery... I even thought about canceling it at the last minute! I assure you it was not bad AT ALL. Here's how it went for me..... I got there, checked in, they took me back, made me change into that BEAUTIFUL hospital gown and the nurse came in. She put my IV in, had me sign some paper work, and then the anestiesiologist came and gave me some really happy drugs and I was out. Next thing I knew I woke up and the nurse gave me some ice chips because my throat was a little dry, but it didn't hurt. It was not bad at all. I had myself worked up over really nothing. You'll be a sore when you get home, but the pain meds will take care of that. You'll do fine:thumbup: GOOD LUCK!

You will be fine. I was nervous too and I've had six other surgeries. When I woke up in recovery my mouth was extremely dry and I had a sore throat. The nurse gave me a sponge swab to suck on for hydration. The sore throat when away after 8 hours or so. I didn't have any nausea, but I attribute that to my doctor ordering three different meds to control it. If you get nauseated easily, make sure you mention that before surgery so you are given something to prevent it.

Forgot to say that the BEST thing you can do when you are allowed to, is WALK!

When I woke up in recovery they just talked to me and a really nice nurse stood and held my hand until I was fully awake...I had on the oxygen mask....I just was looking around....

Then they brought me to my room pretty quickly and I got settled, they took my vitals and I said can I walk yet? They said sure, so up I got.....slowly, grabbed my iv pole and out the door I went...my husband followed me.....I then did a lap around the nurses station...

I kept doing this for longer and longer times and had NO gas pain or anything...I know I was on drugs too! but still....walk walk walk...

The guy in the room next to me had surgery before me and he was laying there moaning away...that's a guy thing huh?...anyway I went into his room and said, "get up and walk!" (ok...our nurse asked me to tell him!) He ignored me for like 2 hours and then finally got up...needless to say, I was doing laps around him and it took him a while to feel better...

SO WALK ASAP...THE KEY TO NO PAIN!!!!

This was the first surgery I had had since I had my tonsils out at age 4 so I was kinda worried too. Like everyone else has said - nothing to worry about, you're mouth will be very dry when you wake up and they'll get you ice chips to begin with, then when you get back to your room, you'll be able to drink - water, juice, broth. the sore throat is not too bad and will go away quickly.

As amsderb said get up and walk, and walk and walk some more. I also was doing laps as soon as I got back to my room and had a liitle bit of gas pain but nothing like some people say.

BTW weigh gain is very normal right after surgery - they've been pumping liquids into you via IV and your body is in a healing process -- I gained 5 lbs the week after surgery - then it all started going away and i have lost 50# so far.

You also may get depressed for a couple of days I did after my 3rd week of liquids (2 weeks before surgery and 1 week after) -- don't worry, the liquid diet does end and you can get back to regular people food which cured my depression. (and I admit I cheated on my 5th day after surgery and went to Taco Bell and got a MexiMelt and ate 1/2 of it, boy was that a treat)

I don't know if I would call myself a veteran when it comes to this procedure but I have been under 4 times. I'm a twice breast cancer survivor so I've seen quite a bit of the inside of a surgery room. But my Dear the only thing you will remember is being wheeled in the surgery room and waking up in the recovery room. What you may experience from where the tube is inserted is a scratchy throat feeling. What will remedy this is either cold liquids or warm liquids. I remember after my first surgery with the tube inserted they gave me hot tea and that did the trick. At first I didn't want to drink anything because of the scratchy feeling, but they threaten me with urinary catheterization because they wanted me to urinate. I still have anxiety when being put under, but I say a pray and leave it in GODs hands. No worries:thumbup:
