Bread after gastric sleeve?

Recommended Posts

Depends on the bread, thin bread toasted is ok, after cinnabon scroll I was in intense pain and very sick. The longer you leave these types of things out of your diet, the better your results. that is the best advice I can give you.

I was allowed the tiny packets of super crispy melba toast at about 6 weeks after surgery. I was told it dissolves quickly. All carbs are still a bit on the heavy side for me. I eat the very occasional slice of super seeded wholemeal but its best toasted crisp. I tried some tiny bites of pitta with humous last week and it wedged in my tummy for hours. I felt awful and nauseous.

Nothing was off limits as far as my team were concerned after about 10 weeks. You need to get answers from your team because they all have different ideas on how to go forwards

The thing is, your pouch is tiny. bread expands. It's a struggle to get all your Protein in, when you're just eating meat. Adding bread to your pouch is going to take up all the room and you won't be able to eat your protein. Protein is vital for healing.

Eat your meat first. Then your vegetables. If you still have room, then you can have your bite of bread.

I'm 4.5 months out and I still won't eat fluffy bread. I'll eat half a slice of Lavash bread, or a small tortilla, but not an actual slice of bread. It just takes up too much room.

We're now eating to nourish and fuel our bodies. Yes, food should taste good and be pleasurable, but we aren't eating for pleasure anymore. We're eating with purpose, now.

i had bread about 4 months after surgery. But i get bread that is very very low in carbs. Normal bread has lots of carbs... This bread is amazing and taste like regular bread. Only one grocery store in my area has it.

Check with your dietician to see what your plan recommends. Some people are allowed bread or bread alternatives relatively early out (but usually as the Protein, then vegetables then only if you are able as @Jeanniebug mentioned).

I still don’t eat bread at almost four years out. I’ve tried the odd bite & it just sits heavily in my tummy. So you may be allowed to eat it but physically can’t. I get all my carbs from low processed rolled oats, vegetables & multigrain crackers. Don’t miss bread or similar products at all.

It's going to depend a lot on your own unique chemistry and situation; I'm 18 months out from VSG and while I am "allowed" to eat whatever I'd like, I still don't tolerate bread, potatoes, rice, or Pasta particularly well so I avoid eating more than a bite or two of any of those things.

I echo those above. I have eaten virtually no Pasta or potatoes in the last 15 months. I can just about tolerate bread, so have been able to eat it in situations where there isn't anything more suitable, but it lies in my stomach like a lump of lead afterwards. Rice is the same - I can have two or three small pieces of sushi and then my stomach says 'no more'. It's really weird but helpful weird, IYKWIM!

As time goes on, you will figure out what your particular body does. For me, I can eat a slice of bread as a sandwich - I like a tuna sandwich ! Do I eat two pieces of bread and tuna ? Nope. I am 12 years out of a VSG. I can happily eat about half a sandwich, so one slice of thin sliced bread and tuna works for me. I can eat baked potato or baked sweet potato, but a very small one or small portion of one. I cannot eat the same amount of white rice. It just doesn't work for me. If I eat Asian, I sprinkle rice on top of veggies or fish or chicken and veggies and eat maybe a tablespoon or two of rice. If we go out somewhere and the bread looks so sexy, I will have a bit with some butter.... as a treat. but if I have more than a couple small bites, I will not be able to eat much else. I need the Protein. And veggies. So I limit my starchy carbs.

      tl:dr at bottom,
I could use some advice. I went to see my dietician today (not a bariatric surgery dietician, I can explain why I am seeing her if you want to know). She knows I am going to have weight loss surgery as long as I hit the goal weight my insurance told me I need to be at. I have to be at the goal weight by June 24, 2023, in order for my insurance to pay for my surgery.
I had a weigh in the doctor's office a couple of days ago and weighed 301, my scale at home said 302. However, on the same day, the scale at a friend's house said 313.
I knew I had this Dietician appointment two days later and I knew she would weigh me. I continued to weigh myself at home (after getting new batteries) and I was at 302 then 299 and today at home I weighed 303, right before my appointment, when I got to her office I was weighed and it said 313.
I am concerned about what to believe since the doctor's office and my scale show similar numbers. I also bought a new scale today and it said 313.
The Dietician told me I needed to eat more protein, which honestly I struggle with. she said I needed 150 grams!!  I said are you kidding? that seems like a lot.  She used my weight to come up with this number.
Should I really be trying to eat enough protein for a 300-lb person or should I be eating protein for a goal-weight person (mine is 170)?
also, my clothing is loose like I lost the 20 lbs mine and the doctor's scale shows, and not 10 lbs like everyone else's scale shows. Also, I have always naturally been more muscular even when I was 120 lbs and did not eat any protein aside from what is in plants.
tl:dr- should I be eating enough protein to support a 300lb person or should I be eating protein for a "normal" sized person? AND should I trust the Doctors scale more so than the Dietician's scale?
